Appendix BELA B30: World Voices and Perspectives
Course Outline Ms. Hosaluk and Mrs. Pawluski
November, 9 2009
English Language Arts B30 is an issue-oriented course that is organized around human concerns in a global society. ELA B30 examines global perspectives using traditional and contemporary world literature in a comparative manner. Selections and themes studied, discussed and examined during this course will reflect the foundational objectives of speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing.
Issue-based units in this curriculum are:
The Human Condition- In Search of Self
Related issues include: Identity and Sense of Self, Human Qualities and Ideals, Human Relationships, Joy and Inspiration, Doubt and Fear
The most profound discovery that we can make is our discovery of self. Our identity rests in the kind of people we are. To understand who we are and to develop fully as human beings, we must explore the nature of our humanness and the purpose of our lives. Who and what are we? What are the common human qualities and ideals we hold? What roles do other people (ex. friends, family) play in our lives? What brings us joy, inspiration, and fulfillment? What doubts and fears do we have? By examining our lives and searching for answers to these and other questions, we can find meaning and fulfillment as human beings.
One of the roles of literature is to hold a mirror to the human condition and to show us the nature of the human mind and heart. By addressing and describing the issues of life, literature shows us the admirable side of humanity – the dignity, the valour, the integrity, the selflessness – as well as the ignoble side – the envy, the deceit, the vanity, and the greed. Individuals are always searching for answers and striving to realize dreams. However, they are often filled with self-doubt and come up short of their expectations. In the final analysis, we must ask “what makes us who we are”?
In this unit, students are asked to consider who they are, how they relate to others, how they deal with the joy, doubts, and fears of life, and what kind of identity they wish to create for themselves throughout life.
The Social Experience- Beyond Personal Goals
Related issues include: Individual and Social Responsibility; Truth and Justice; Ambition, Power, and the Common Good; Social Criticism; Causes and Crusades
In an issue-based course, students explore their thoughts, beliefs, and assumptions as they examine issues related to their world and the world of others. Students are encouraged to use language purposefully and effectively as they process information, make decisions, solve problems, and think creatively and critically. As students examine issues, they develop competence in understanding and using language. As they examine literature from many periods and different genres, students understand the scope of human experience.
Activities in this course are dependent upon student interests and varying student learning styles. Textual choices are dependent upon class size and availability and may include:
1. Joy and Inspiration; Doubt and Fear – Shakespeare’s Hamlet (England), Short stories and poetry, “Create a Character” assignment
2. Human Qualities and Ideals – an excerpt from Night (Wiesel, Romania), various short stories from the global community, excerpts from “Beowulf”(England) (poem), “The Pardoner’s Tale” (Chaucer, England) (poem)
3. Individual and Social Responsibility – Short story “The Guest” (Camus, Algeria/France), existentialism
4. Identity and sense of self – who are what are we? Three minute nomination speech for an award presentation
5. Novel and film choices: The Great Gatsby, The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn, 1984, The Green Mile, The Kite Runner, Totsi, Cry Freedom, Angela’s Ashes, and book report on novel of your choice
6. Human Relationships – “Fear” (Mistral, Chile), “Sonnet 43” (Browning, England), “Marriage is A Private Affair” (Achebe, Nigeria) – various essays and short stories
7. Non-fiction – “Shooting an Elephant” (Orwell, England), Elizabethan England life and times of William Shakespeare (I-Search)

Dear Grade 12 students,
This is my first year teaching at Nutana and I am very fortunate to be doing my internship here. During the first quarter I taught ELA 20, and loved every minute of it! I am very excited to begin teaching ELA B 30 this Quarter to all of you.
I am excited to get to know each and every one of you! I don’t know the majority of you. I don’t know what you like, what your interests are, or what your plans are for the future. In your letter, I’d like you to tell me about yourself, as an individual and as a student. So, please be kind and respond to this letter.
In your letter, talk about your life. What is your family like? Do you have any brothers or sisters? What are your interests? Do you have any special talents? What are your likes and dislikes? Do you have any pets? Can you tell me something interesting about yourself? Tell me as much as you would like, no one else will be seeing these letters and there is little sense in writing them if you are not honest. What are your hopes and plans for the future? How have you managed in English up to this point? Have you been successful? Where have you had difficulties? Do you like reading? What about writing or public speaking? How is your spelling? What would you like to improve on this year? How can I help you? Write as much as you wish and hand it in at the end of class.
After I read your letters, I will place them in a file. They will be given back to you at the end of the Quarter. Thank You!
I look forward to reading your letters!
Sincerely,
Mrs. K Pawluski
