COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSONS

TRAIL MANNERS

Good manners is the grease that helps people get along with each other avoiding friction. UNDER 16 MUST WEAR A HELMET. Be aware of the effect your actions have on oth-

ers, their horses and their property. Do not upset your co-rider’s horses. Ride at a quiet, controlled pace. NEVER PASS OTHERS AT A GALLOP. Keep a safe distance… don’t crowd others. STAY WITH A DISMOUNTED RIDER Respect the property of others. (ie: lawns, farm

fields, crops, groves, livestock, etc.) Leave gates as you found them: Open gates

should remain open. Closed gates should remain closed.

DO NOT PASS THE TRAIL BOSS or drop behind the drag rider.

Stay with the trail boss on the same side of the road. Do not split the road.

Clean up after your horse. Pick up manure or spread it depending on where you are. Do not clean your trailers out when you unload.

NO PROFANITY ON ANY SFTR EVENTS. REMEMBER! If you mind your manners others won’t mind when you and your horse return to ride.

HORSE CHARITIES

The SFTR donates to these charities once a year. These charities are badly in need of donations. Please try to send what you can to help them. Thanks from the SFTR.

Its that time again to ride the best inter-local trail system in the state of Florida. Join us for the 15th annual Maines Marathon Ride to benefit Peaceful Ridge Rescue, ( A Home for Every Horse ) This is not a ride for the tender foot, so get your horse ready for a ride from all the way out west to east Davie. This is an 18 mile ride to cele-brate the trail system that you probably never knew existed, between Southwest Ranches, Weston and Davie. Learn the trails, the connections and the trail heads of a trail system that others can only dream of. Sunday January 5, 2014 drop your horse off at the Maines Ranch in Southwest Ranches at 8:30 AM, then take your trailer to Bergeron Rodeo Are-na in Davie and get shuttled back to your horse to start the ride. ANNUAL TOY DRIVE PARADE The South Florida Trail Riders will be collecting toys for local children in the area. These toys will be distributed by the Miami-Dade Fire Department. We encourage you to donate at least one toy, gift card or cash to participate in this ride. Last year we collected more than 186 toys at our meetings and at the event. Let’s do it again!!! Toys and gifts will be collect-ed at our December Club meeting as well as at the event. We will once again ride from Larry and Penny Thompson Park. This annual Jingle Bell Jaunt toy drive costume contest will be on Saturday, December 14th, from 9:00 AM until about noon. We will collect toys, conduct a costume contest and parade through “the beautiful camping area and R.V. Park” on horseback, walking and riding on the hay wagon. Horses and riders/walkers will be decked out in holiday style for the parade. Last year we had a very big welcome from the snow birds that make this park their winter home. They absolutely loved us. The staging area will be where the toys will be collected, the costumes are judged and where lunch will be served. We have a nice safe area to park our trailers, decorate ourselves and our hors-es in the mango grove inside the park. After the festivities are con-cluded you are invited to take advantage of the beautiful bridle trails throughout the park for some additional enjoyment on your own. I am always amazed at the wonderful and creative costumes our members display. Many take all year to plan and assemble. The winners will be announced after the parade during a hot dog lunch. You may arrive and sign in any time after 8:00 AM. Judg-ing will be at 10 AM. The parade will begin at 11:00 A.M. We should be able to eat lunch around 12:30. Prizes will be given for walkers, horses, riders and carriages. Spectators are encouraged at the staging area and along the route. We will have a well qualified panel of Judges again this year. Cos-tume contest prizes will include: Delightfully Decorative, Fantasti-cally Festive, Outrageously Original, Holiday Hysteria, Holly Jolly Walker, and Jolly Jingle Junior. The real winners will be the chil-dren who get the toys. Please plan on entering the contest or watching the parade and participating in the toy drive. We look forward to seeing you at our club meetings or at the event on December 14th. Carrie Hershberger

THE GOOD FOOT AT A GLANCE Article 7 – White Line

This is the seventh in a series of articles about the visible anatomy of the equine hoof. As each horse is unique, the descriptions used will be basic and generally thought to be acceptable by veterinarians, farriers, and barefoot trimmers. This is meant to be a guideline to help you recognize a good foot or a potential problem. I am a barefoot enthusiast with nine barefoot horses and I have completed a year long course on applied equine podia-try. The articles are edited by Zachary Franklin, DVM.

Definition of White Line: The area located at the junction of the sole and the wall. The white line follows the circumference of the hoof wall, and runs vertically between the inner wall and the laminae, from the area just below the coffin bone to the ground. The white line isolates the sensitive structures of the internal foot from infil-tration of foreign bodies such as dirt, stones and micro-organisms.

In the properly functioning foot, a small amount of this material is abraded away at ground level creating a shallow crease around the circumference of the hoof. This crease often fills with dirt helping to provide increased traction. A tight healthy white line effectively prevents infiltration of bacteria that may otherwise cause the abscess known as a gravel or white-line disease, where the tissue is digested away leaving a hollowed out hoof wall. FLA. DONKEY AND MULE EXPO...A HUGE SUCCESS !!!!

Whether attending the Expo for harnessing or driving, nutrition or obstacles, saddle fitting or training – the recent Groveland, Fl. event had it all! Sponsored by the Fla. Donkey & Mule Assn., and hosted by Bodie Myer (Pres.) at Myer's Meadows, the day long venue I attended was very well planned. There were demonstrations and in-struction to fine tune rider/driver skills with Susan Soderbergh, mini and large equine harnessing instruction, de-sensitizing and obstacle clinic sessions with Bess Wall, large animal rescue information; and judging/showmanship classes in which owners could ride their equine and receive show venue training in a large arena! There was plenty of shade and food, tents of arts and crafts, used tack and carts; and a wide array of adult-supervised sports, petting zoo, story telling (with Tom Krueger-V.P.), and craft activities to keep youngsters oc-cupied. If you have a chance to attend this Expo next Oct., you will gain knowledge of training techniques, solutions to nutritional issues, a broader sense of groundwork and show practices, and you will have met a wonderful group of longear enthusiasts that do not discriminate against shorter eared equines. Get a vendor table to sell your tack, clothing, carts, crafts, art, jewelry, flea market goods, etc and still attend all the seminars. I'm definitely headed back next year! Bonny George, Jr.
