I am looking at a design similar to this: and I have built majority of it however I am having trouble getting the solenoid to pull with enough force. At the moment I am using PVC piping with around 2m of insulated copper wire wrapped around it. I am using 12V of power which according to my multimeter is producing about 0.02m Amps. Also I am using a super magnet as the core which was found in a hard drive (I believe it is neodymium). Solenoid Engine My question is how can I cause more magnetic force within the pvc piping using the materials I have stated? Also would it be better if I purchased some more wiring to go around the PVC? homeworkandexercises electromagnetism electricalengineering edited Aug 31 '13 at 12:25 Dimensio1n0 1 asked Aug 31 '13 at 12:01 ReallyGoodPie 106 4 as offtopic by , , , closed Chris White akhmeteli Emilio Pisanty David Z Sep 1 '13 at 1:23 This question appears to be offtopic. I just retagged it as such to differentiate it for now. See . meta.physics.stackexchange.com/questions/4535/… Dimensio1n0 Aug 31 '13 at 12:33 1 Do you have something in series with the wire to limit the current? A 2m wire connected directly to 12V should pull a lot more current than 20 mA. What kind of 12V battery is this? Is the battery voltage staying at 12V when you connect it? Batteries tend not to survive long with wires connected directly across their terminals, perhaps it is dead or dieing. more current and/or more wire.
