Homework  1   Name:_____________________________  Period:_______      Due:  1/17/13      1. Solve  Each  System  By  Graphing

 a.          ! = − !

!! + 3         b.      ! = 4! + 3         c.    ! = −1

! = !!! − 3                      ! = −! − 2                  ! = − !

!! + 4

   2. Write  a  system  of  equations  for  the  following  situations  and  solve  using  graphing.

 a. Sophia  spent  $60  on  new  jewelry.    Necklaces  cost  $10  and  earrings  cost  $5.    If  she  bought  a  total  of  7  then  how  many

of  each  kind  did  she  buy?

b. There  are  13  animals  in  the  barn.    Some  are  chickens  and  some  are  pigs.    There  are  40  legs  in  all.    How  many  of  each  animal  are  there?

3. Solve  Each  System  by  Substitution

a. ! = 6! − 11       b.          2! − 3! = −1       c.        ! = −3! + 5  −2! − 3! = −7                        ! = ! − 1                          5! − 4! = −3

d.          −3! − 3! = 3       e.        ! = −2         f.          ! = 5! − 7                                    ! = −5! − 17                    4! − 3! = 18                    −3! − 2! = −12

4. Write  a  system  of  equations  for  the  following  situations  and  solve  using  substitution.

a. A  class  of  195  students  went  on  a  field  trip.    They  took  7  vehicles,  some  cars  and  some  buses.    Find  the  number  of  cars  and  the  number  of  buses  they  took  if  each  car  holds  5  students  and  each  bus  hold  45  students.

 b. On  a  canoe  trip,  Rita  paddled  upstream  (against  the  current)  at  an  average  speed  of  2  mi/h  relative  to  the  riverbank.

On  the  return  trip  downstream  (with  the  current),  her  average  speed  was  3  mi/h.    Find  Rita’s  paddling  speed  in  still  water  and  the  speed  of  the  river’s  current.
