India's first MarineFinfish Brood Bank;RecirculatingAquaculture Systemand MaricultureComplex atMandapam RC

At Mandapam Regional Centre ofCMFRI, India's first marine brood fish

bank facility, a state of art RecirculatingAquaculture System (RAS) laboratoryand a Mariculture complex werecommissioned by the Secretary, DARE &Director General of ICAR, Dr. S. Ayyappanon 12th May 2013. A new Research &Administrative Block and an InternationalTrainees' Hostel were also inaugurated bythe Director General. The function wasgraced by Dr. B. Meenakumari, DeputyDirector General (Fy.), ICAR, Dr. MadanMohan, Assistant Director General (M.Fy.),ICAR, Shri. K. Nanthakumar, IAS, District

Collector, Ramanathapuram andCommandant H.H. More, CommandingOfficer, Indian Coast Guard, MandapamStation.

A national marine finfish brood bank wherethe brooders of high value finfishes can bedeveloped for breeding and seedproduction was designed and built. Theconcept of broodstock bank was evolved, designed and the same was constructedat Mandapam Regional Centre. Thebroodstock tanks with continuousbiofiltration system can be used tomaintain broodstocks of high valuemarine finfishes like cobia, silverpompano, groupers, snappers, breams, healthily. Maintenance of marine finfishbroodstock in land based system is generallyexpensive, time consuming and labourintensive which prohibits the private sector/entrepreneurs to venture in mariculture.Understanding this bottleneck, the CMFRIhas established a National Marine Fish BroodBank at Mandapam aimed to holdbroodstocks of commercially importantmarine finfishes and to supply quality eggs /newly hatched larvae to the privatehatcheries for fingerling production. Thisfacility is the first of its kind in India and wascommissioned by the Director General.

A recirculation aquaculture system withcomponents such as drum filter, fluidized-bed bioreactor, protein skimmer, UVsterilizer and egg collection facility, isinevitable for healthy maintenance of themarine finfish broodstocks and year-round breeding. The system will serveto develop the broodstocks intospawners. The photo-thermalconditioning for accelerating maturation

can also be incorporated into the system. The safety of the spawners and year-round controlled spawning are ensuredin this sytem. The RAS facility, which wasinstalled at Mandapam by importingsophisticated equipment from M/s.Aquatic Ecosystems, USA, is the first of itskind in India. This facility was commissionedby the Director General.

Massive infrastructure for broodstockdevelopment is needed for developing thebroodstocks of larger species such asyellowfin tuna. The large scale fingerling

Empowerment ofSidi tribals of

Gujarat throughcage mariculture

On 13th April 2013, CMFRI elatedthe spirit of one of the primitive

tribes of India, the 'Sidi', by successfullyharvesting the seacage farms off-Veravaland handing over the produce and theseacage farm assets to tribal community. The harvest of the seacage farm establishedby the CMFRI off-Veraval for the tribals wasinaugurated by Dr. S. Ayyappan, SecretaryDARE and Director General, ICAR, NewDelhi. The farm was established by theCMFRI under the Tribal Sub Plan outlay ofthe Institute for 2012-13 for the benefit of20 selected families of the Sidi tribe in Veravaland Talala of Junagadh district through acooperative society of the tribals as alivelihood support to the tribal community.

After 110 days of culture, the farm yieldedan estimated production of 2.5 t of lobsterswhich was sold at a price range of Rs. 1000-1200/kg based on the size group of thelobsters and 300 kg of cobia. The farmassets worth about 33 lakh rupees and theproduce valued about 26 lakh rupees at theprevailing market price was handed over tothe 'Sidi' tribals by the Director General,ICAR on 13th May 2013. The augustpresence of Dr. N.C. Patel, VC of JAU,Junagadh, Shri Darbar IAS, Commissionerof Fisheries, Gujarat, Dr. Madan Mohan,ADG (M. Fy.), Dr. T. K. Srinivasa GopalDirector CIFT, Dr. Mishra, Director, DGR,Junagad and several farmers, entrepreneurs,

fishermen and Press people made themoment precious. The tribals led byMr. Hasin Bhai expressed their gratitude forICAR and expressed that this was the firstGovernment agency that has helped for theirupliftment in their history. Dr. S. Ayyappancomplimented the CMFRI staff led byDr. G.Syda Rao, Director and Veraval RCstaff for this illustrious cause of integratingtechnology for social benefit of tribalcommunity and hoped for more initiation inthis direction by several other ICARInstitutes. In the harvest program, DirectorGeneral, Dr. S. Ayyappan released a bookon Handbook of Marine Prawns of Indiapublished by CMFRI.

The endeavour of CMFRI is lauded as anovel initiative, as it involves not just provisionof a high end livelihood to one of the primitivetribal group but also made these tribals thecustodians and mentors of a promisingtechnology which is inevitable for theexistence of the coastal population in thelong run in view of the dwindling catch shareand vulnerability of the coastal areas to

climate change. The tribal communitymembers who were marginal labourerswith an average daily earning of less than Rs.150/day would now earn nearly Rs. 810per day during the crop period of 115 daysin addition to winning the farm assets handedover to them for continued farming in thecoming crop seasons. The capacities of thetribals have been built with adequate trainingon all aspects of the technology fromfabrication of the seacages to regularmonitoring and best practices for higheryield. Hence, the initiative of the CMFRIwould go a long way in boosting their overallsocio-economic status.

The farm which was a centre of attractionto the fisheries fraternity of the state of

Gujarat, in addition to having functioned as aplatform for research on key issues in opensea farming, have also been used for trainingother stakeholders in the state such as thefishermen from various coastal districts, officers of the state Department of Fisheries, fisheries and marine sciences students,NGO workers, CSR teams of corporatebodies in the region etc. This is yet anotherexample of success of open seacage farmingtechnology developed by the Institute and atestimony to the potential of developing seafarming as a major source of fish productionin Gujarat owing to its vast maritimeresources spread over 1600 km longcoastline.

The greasy grouper Epinephelustauvina is a major marine species in

India and not available in sufficientquantities in the capture fisheries. It is oneof the fast growing groupers andcommands excellent live markets.Farmers are in great need for the seedof this species for farming in cages andponds which can tolerate wide range ofsalinities. It can grow up to one kg inabout 9 months after the initial nurseryphase. It fetches a farm gate price ofRs.200 in domestic market.

CMFRI initiated the challenging taskalmost two decades ago. However, induced breeding and seed productiontechnology was developed atVisakhapatnam RC of CMFRI with theimproved and state of the art laboratoryfacilities. Now arrangements are beingmade to grow the seed of this fish inponds and cages on a participatory mode.

The non- availability of sufficient quantityof seeds from the natural grounds at theright time for farming purpose is themajor constraint in the farming ofgroupers. At Visakhapatnam RegionalCentre of CMFRI, live groupers of varyingsizes (2.0 to 10.0 kg) were collected fromthe wild and were stocked in cagesmaintained near to the shore. Groupersbeing protogynous, all individuals stockedwere females. Successful sex reversal(female to male) was achieved withhormonal and enzymatic manipulation.Fishes were implanted with differentdoses of enzymes. Female fish with intraovarian ova of diameter >450µ and sexreversed male were used for inducedspawning.

The eggs hatched out with hatching rate of78% after 19 - 20 hrs of incubation at atemperature range of 28-30ºC. The newlyhatched larvae were in length range of 1.0-1.4 mm. The mouth opening was formed

after 60 hrs post hatching. Mixed feedingschedule was followed from 15th day posthatch with Artemia nauplii, copepods andartificial diets. Metamorphosed fingerlings oflength 5 - 6 cm were obtained after 44days. This success will go a long way in

promoting grouper aquaculture in cages aswell as in grow-out ponds in the country. This is the first successful larval rearing ofgreasy grouper in India.

Landing of a juvenile whale shark at Madhvad Harbour, Gujarat

A juvenile of Whale Shark (Rhincodontypus) measured upto a length 30 feet

was found near Madhvad harbour about100 meter far from Kodinar in a deadcondition. It was caught by a multiday trawleron 29th April, 2013. With the help of thestate fisheries department the specimen wasdissected for further analysis. Informationabout shark fish was first reported tofishermen and then to the state fisheriesofficer. The Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus)is a cosmopolitan tropical and warmtemperate species and is the largest livingchondrichthyan. The fish is a highly

migratorty species and its life history is poorlyunderstood. Populations appear to havebeen depleted by harpoon fisheries inSoutheast Asia and perhaps incidentalcapture in other fisheries. Small-scaleharpoon and entanglement fisheries havetaken place in various regions of the world, including India (whale shark fishing bannedin 2001), Pakistan, Taiwan Philippines(banned in 1998) and the Maldives (priorto protection in 1995). It has a highinternational market demand and normallylow abundance make this species vulnerableto commercial fishing.

Accidental catch of Pristis microdon

The large tooth sawfish Pristismicrodon of the family Pristidae of

Elasmobranch was accidentally caught intrawl net at Malpe Karnataka. The fishweighed about 800kg. This fish is includedin the IUCN list and MoEF ban list.Generally the fishermen in Karnataka avoidcatching sawfish as it destroys their nets andis considered as a badus omen.

The Sacred Chank, popularly known asDakshinavarti Shankh, has been one of

the very few tangible epitomes which havestraddled the Indian culture and history fromtime immemorial. The trace of history ofthis Sacred Chank spills over many centurieswith the earliest cited evidence dating backto 785 BC. Korkai, a bustling port town inthe south eastern part of Tamil Nadu, underthe rule of Pandiya kings was a flourishingcentre for trade of the Chank as per the midfirst century CE recordings of Periplus ofthe Red Sea, who is also credited with thepublication of navigation manual of the SilkRoute.

Indian epics are replete with references ofSacred Chank and the Hindu religious beliefshave this Chank at the centre of manyauspicious activities. In Hindu religion,Shankh, is of great importance andsymbolizes luster, brilliance, purity andauspicious. In India the sound of the conchis associated with the sacred syllable OM,the first sound of creation. The protectorGod, Lord Vishnu, is the original bearer ofthe Chank as per puranas which he holdswith elan in his left hand.As per the legendthe Dakshinavarti Shankh was one of the byproducts of the Samudra Manthan jointlyperformed by Devas and Asuras,Sudarshana Chakra being the other. Theconch is used as a trumpet to ward offnegative vibes and evil spirits and is also thecontainer of sacred water. As an integral part

of Hindu symbolic and religious tradition, itsblowing marks the beginning of ceremoniesand evan wars in the past.

The designing of the sacred conch is suchthat the ones which open towards Left righthand (Dakshinavarti Shankh) can magnify thevery low frequency natural cosmic vibrationof the Earth and would be made audible asa humming noise to human ears. Thisextremely low frequency (ELF) resonancereferred to as heartbeat frequency of earthhas been studied in detail and popularlyreferred to as Schumann's resonance. Theinnards of the conch is shaped as themorphogenetic fields of consciousnesswhich is basis of intelligent shaping of matterand higher organisms. Needless to stress,Sacred Chank has a permanent veritableplace in the religio- cultural history of India.

In Buddhism, blowing of the conch signifiesvictory over suffering. In Chinese Buddhism, the conch shell signifies a prosperousjourney, and in Islam it represents the hearingof the divine word. Quetzalcoatl created lifewith the aid of a conch shell and he is alwayspictured wearing a conch pectoral. Tritonthe son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, inancient Greece is depicted with a trumpetmade from a conch which he used to raiseor calm storms.

In modern day India, chank has always beentreated more with reverence than as anornamental entity with even the products

like bangles made out of it, being usedexclusively on sacred occasions like marriagesetc.

This monograph elucidates the relevant bio-parameters of the Sacred Chank as a naturalresource belonging to the Indian oceanicregion which had always been a focus ofresearch and study by many other countries. The rarity of this species and its unique habitatprevalent around the Indian peninsula makesit binding on the our part to conserve, preserve and rejuvenate the common tractsof this resource. This book studies in detailthe various conservation and replenishmentmethods like sea ranching which would servewell to sustain the slide of the stock. Themanagement of this resource unlike otherfishery resources, has to be given a specialstatus because of the place and importance ithas in the socio-cultural visage of our country. As the consumerism of chank is closely andexclusively intertwined with the religiousactivities, any effort in the conservation andreplenishment of the resource and its postharvest handling must involve religiousintelligentsia. The science and ensuingmethods of management of this rareresource propounded by the researchersmust be given a channelization into actionwith the active involvement of religious headsof the country as it would ensure innateawareness and self correcting balancingmechanism at the community level whoseimpact would be positive and perpetual.
