    MOWER SAFETYSafety Information

Most accidents with walk-behind mowers can be prevented if youfollow all instructions in this manual and on the mower. The mostcommon hazards, according to accident statistics, are discussedbelow, along with the best way to protect yourself and others.Avoid Rotating Blades

Rotating blades can cause serious cuts and even amputatefingers, hands, toes, or feet. Keep away from the mower deckwhenever the engine is running. If you need to work around thedeck to clear grass accumulation, adjust the cutting height, or forany other reason, always shut off the engine. Disconnect thespark plug cap from the spark plug. Wear heavy gloves when youneed to clean the mower deck or handle the blade(s).

Clear Mowing AreaMower blades can throw rocks and other objects with enoughforce to cause serious injury. Before mowing, carefully inspectthe area and remove all sticks, stones, pieces of wire, and otherloose objects. Never operate the blade(s) over gravel.

YOUR CHILDRENS SAFETY IS VERY IMPORTANT to Honda.Thats why we urge you to read this message before letting youryoungster operate this lawn mower. Lawn mowers are tools, nottoys. As with any equipment, bad judgments can result in seriousinjuries. You can help prevent accidents by making gooddecisions about if, when, and how your youngster operates thisequipment. The first question youll need to ask is whether your youngster iscapable of operating this mower safely. Remember, youngpeople vary widely, and AGE IS NOT THE ONLY FACTOR.Physically, a youngster must be LARGE ENOUGH ANDSTRONG ENOUGH to easily start the mower and control itsdirection. The youngster also needs enough size, strength, andcoordination to comfortably reach and operate the controls.Another, tougher question you need to ask is if your youngsterhas enough MATURITY AND RESPONSIBILITY to safelyoperate this mower. Does the young person think throughproblems and come to logical solutions? Be honest! Anyone whotakes unnecessary risks and doesnt obey rules should notoperate this lawn mower. If you decide that your son or daughter can handle the mowersafely, CAREFULLY READ THE OWNERS MANUAL with youryoungster. Make sure you both understand all instructions andsafety information. Also, be sure your youngster wears sturdyshoes and other protective clothing when operating or handlingthe mower.SUPERVISION is also very important. Walk with your youngsterduring the first few minutes of mowing. Even after the youngsterhas become confident with the mower, do not let the youngperson use the mower without good adult supervision. An adultshould also be present during refueling and maintenance. In fact, its up to parents to make sure that the mower is properlymaintained and kept in safe operating condition.By always placing safety first, your youngster will acquire usefulskills and a sense of accomplishment. BLADES AND ATTACHMENTSBlades

HRB215 0HRB215 mowers are factory equipped with a high-lift blade formaximum bagging and side-discharge performance.

    ONE-PIECE HIGH-LIFT BLADE(standard for HRB215, optional for HRM215)

l Best for bagging and side-discharge.l Less effective for mulching.

HRM215HRM215 mowers are factory-equipped with a special two-piecemulching blade assembly. With the mulching plug installed (page 9), the two bladesrecirculate cut grass under the mower deck, where the clippingsare chopped into small particles that fall through the turf anddecompose quickly. This returns nutrients to the soil and reducesthe need for raking, bagging, and disposal. When the mulching plug is removed, and the optional grass bagor side-discharge chute is installed, the blades blow cut grassinto the bag or out the side-discharge chute. It is not necessary to change blades when switching betweenmulching, bagging, and side-discharge operation. The mulchingblades perform all three functions.

TWO-PIECE MULCHING BLADE ASSEMBLY.(standard for HRMPlS, optional or HRB215)

l Best for mulching.l OK for bagging and side-discharge.

BLADES AND ATTACHMENTSGrass Bag (standard for HRB215, optional for HRM215)

With the grass bag installed, thelawn mower works like avacuum cleaner. It blows airthrough the bag, which traps theclippings.Bagging should be considered Bwhere you want the lawn to beclear of loose particles, such asaround swimming pools.Bagging is also a good way todeal with less frequently mowedareas where the grass hasgrown too tall to mulch easily. To attach the grass bag, lift thedischarge guard, (remove themulching plug if so equipped),and hook the bag onto themower deck as shown. Releasethe discharge guard to securethe grass bag.

Mulching Plug (standard for HRM215, optional for HRB215)The mulching plug contours the DISCHARGE GUARDmower deck for efficientmulching when the mower isequipped with the two-piecemulching blade assembly(paw 8).You can quickly remove theplug to install a grass bag orside-discharge chute.Raise the discharge guard toremove or install the mulchingplug. When installing, be surethe plug is fully inserted, and thedischarge guard is closed. MULCHING PLUG

The chute directs grass clippings away from the operator andspreads them over the lawn. The clippings will be larger thanmulched particles, and they may need to be removed by raking.Side-discharge mowing should be considered for less frequentlymowed areas where grass has grown too tall to mulch easily. To attach the chute, lift the discharge guard, (remove themulching plug if so equipped), and hook the chute onto themower deck as shown. Fuel RecommendationsUse gasoline wi.th a pump octane rating of 86 or higher. We recommend unleaded fuel because it produces fewer engineand spark plug deposits and extends exhaust system life.Never use stale or contaminated gasoline or an oil/gasolinemixture. Avoid getting dirt or water in the fuel tank.Occasionally you may hear light spark knock or pinging(metallic rapping noise) while operating under heavy loads. Thisis no cause for concern. If spark knock or pinging occurs at a steady engine speed, undernormal load, change brands of gasoline. If spark knock or pingingpersists, see an authorized Honda lawn mower dealer.

1 NOTICE 1Running the engine with persistent spark knock or pinging cancause engine damage.

Running the engine with persistent spark knock or pinging ismisuse, and the Distributors Limited Warranty does not coverparts damaged by misuse.

    BEFORE MOWINGOxygenated Fuels

Some conventional gasolines are being blended with alcohol oran ether compound. These gasolines are collectively referred toas oxygenated fuels. Some areas of the United States andCanada use oxygenated fuels to help reduce emissions. If you use an oxygenated fuel, be sure it is unleaded and meetsthe minimum octane rating requirement. Before using an oxygenated fuel, try to confirm the fuelscontents. Some states/provinces require this information to beposted on the pump. The following are the EPA approved percentages of oxygenates:

ETHANOL (ethyl or grain alcohol) 10% by volumeYou may use gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol byvolume. Gasoline containing ethanol may be marketed underthe name Gasohol.MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) 15% by volumeYou may use gasoline containing up to 15% MTBE by volume.METHANOL (methyl or wood alcohol) 5%You may use gasoline containing up to 5% methanol byvolume, as long as it also contains cosolvents and corrosioninhibitors to protect the fuel system. Gasoline containing morethan 5% methanol by volume may cause starting and/orperformance problems. It may also damage metal, rubber, andplastic parts of your fuel system. If you notice any undesirable operating symptoms, try anotherservice station, or switch to another brand of gasoline.

Fuel system damage or performance problems resulting from theuse of an oxygenated fuel containing more than the percentagesof oxygenates mentioned above are not covered under warranty.

    MOWINGSafe Mowing Practices

For your safety, keep all four wheels on the ground, and becareful to avoid losing your footing and your control of the mower.Keep a firm grip on the handlebar, and walk, never run, with themower. Be very careful when mowing uneven or rough ground. If stuck, do not kick or shove the mower with your foot. Use thehandlebar to control the mower.

The blade is sharp and spins at high speed.A spinning blade can cut .you severely and can amputatefingers and toes.l Wear protective footwear.l Keep your hands and feet away from the mower deck whilethe engine is running.l Stop the engine before performing any adjustment, inspection, or maintenance.l Never tilt the mower while the engine is running.l Be careful to avoid losing your balance and slipping.

SlopesMow across slopes, not up anddown. Avoid steep slopes (morethan 209, and be careful whenchanging direction. Mowing ona slope when the grass is dampor wet could cause you to slip, fall, and lose control of themower.

    MOWINGObstacles

Use the side of the mower to cut close to large obstacles, such asfences or walls.Release the drive clutch lever to disengage the drive whenmowing around trees and other obstacles. Push the moweraround obstacles for better directional control. Be careful whenmowing over obstacles embedded in the lawn, such as sprinklerheads, paving, edging, etc. Avoid anything that sticks up abovethe surface of the lawn.If the blade(s) hit something, or if the mower starts to vibrate, stopthe engine immediately and check for damage. Striking objectsmay damage the blade(s), bend the crankshaft, and/or break themower deck or other components. Vibration usually indicatesserious trouble.

Worn, cracked, or damaged blades can break, and pieces ofdamaged blades can become dangerous projectiles.Thrown objects can cause serious injury.Inspect the blades regularly, and do not operate the mowerwith worn or damaged blades.

The Distributors Limited Warranty does not cover parts damagedby accident or collision.

Gravel and Loose ObjectsThe best way to prevent potential injury from thrown objects is torelease the blade control lever to stop the blade(s) beforereaching areas with gravel, loose stones, or landscaping material.

    MOWINGMowing TipsWhen to Mow

Most grasses should be mowedwhen they have grown l/2 to 1inch above their recommendedheight. For best mulching results, mowthe lawn frequently, cutting offless than one inch of grasseach time. In growing season, you will probably need to mowthe lawn twice a week.

Cutting HeightConsult a local nursery or lawnand garden center for cuttingheight recommendations andadvice about specific types ofgrasses and growing conditionsin your area.If you look closely, youll see thatmost grass has stems andleaves. If you cut off the leaves, youll scalp the lawn. Let the LONG TOO SHORTgrass recover between ENOUGHmowings. Your mower will workbetter, and your lawn will lookbetter. If your grass gets too tall, cut it once at the highest cutting heightsetting, then mow again in 2 or 3 days. Dont take off more thanone third of total grass height in any one mowing, or brownpatches may develop.Cutting height adjustment is explained on page 18.

    36

  • 8/3/2019 Honda Mower Manual

    42/90

Cutting WidthFor an even lawn finish, overlapeach mowing swath by a fewinches. If the grass is very tall orthick, use more overlap andanarrower mowing swath.

Blade SpeedThe blade must spin very fast tocut properly. Always use theFAST throttle setting, and keepthe engine running at maximumrpm. If engine speed drops, thatmeans the blade is trying to cuttoo much grass. Mow anarrower swath, move themower more slowly, or raise thecutting height.

Blade Sharpness TROlTLE LEVERSharp blades cut cleanly. Dull blades tear the grass, leavingshredded ends that turn brown. When your blade(s) doesnt cut cleanly anymore, have itsharpened or replaced (see page 58).

Dry GrassIf the ground is too dry, mowing will stir up a lot of dust. Besidesbeing unpleasant to work in, too much dust will clog thecarburetor air filter. If dust is a problem, water your lawn the day before mowing.Mow when the grass is dry to your touch, but the soil is still moist.Wet Gr,assWet grass is slippery and can make you lose your footing. Also, wet grass clippings will clog the mower deck and collect inclumps on the lawn. Always wait for wet grass to dry beforemowing.

    MOWINGFallen Leaves

If you want to mulch fallenleaves into your lawn, dont letthe leaf cover get too deepbefore you begin. For bestresults, start mulching whilegrass still shows through the leafcover.Mulching blades (see page 8)and the mulching plug(see page 9) are standardequipment on HRM215 mowers. They can be installed as optionalequipment on HRB215 mowers. In places where fallen leaves completely cover the grass, removethe leaves by raking, or install the grass bag, so your mower canpick them up for disposal. The grass bag is standard equipment on HRB215 mowers (seepage 9) and can be installed as optional equipment on HRM215mowers.If using your mower to bag large accumulations of fallen leavesfor disposal, and not for mowing or mulching, set the cuttingheight adjustment levers so the front of the mower deck is one ortwo settings higher than the rear.

If the Mower Deck ClogsBefore clearing a cloggedmower deck, stop the engine, leave the throttle lever in theSTOP position and disconnectthe spak plug cap. Tilt themower so the carburetor side isup-Clear a clogged deck with astick, not your hands.

    MOWINGMowing Patterns

Your Honda mower will work most efficiently if you use thefollowing mowing patterns as much as possible. Mower deck andequipment design, and the direction in which the blade(s) rotates, cause these mowing patterns to give the best results.MULCHING

Mulching requires the mulchingblades (see page 8) andmulching plug (see page 9) thatare standard equipment onHRM215 mowers and optionalfor HRB215 mowers.Use a counterclockwise mowingpattern. If the lawn has anirregular shape, or manyobstacles, divide it into sectionswhere you can usecounterclockwise mowingpatterns.

BAGGINGBagging requires the grass bag(see page 9) that is standardequipment on HRB215 andoptional for HRM215 mowers.Use a clockwise mowingpattern. This will give the bestbagging performance, leavingthe least amount of clippings onthe lawn.

    SIDE-DISCHARGE MOWING

    \..::j.:.:.:.:IXiI3ii!BAGGING & SIDE-DISCHARGEPATTERN

The side-discharge chute (see page 10) is optional equipment forHRB215 and HRM215 mowers.Use a clockwise mowing pattern, starting at the outer edges ofthe lawn and working toward the center. This will preventclippings from piling up in the path of the mower.

MAINTENANCE & ADJUSTMENTSCarburetor Modification for High Altitude Operation

At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mixture will betoo rich. Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption willincrease. A very rich mixture will also foul the spark plug andcause hard starting.High altitude performance can be improved by installing a smallerdiameter main fuel jet in the carburetor and readjusting the pilotscrew. If you always operate the mower at altitudes higher than1,800 meters (6,000 feet) above sea level, have an authorizedHonda lawn mower dealer perform this carburetor modification.Even with carburetor modification, engine horsepower willdecrease about 3.5% for each 300 meter(1 ,000 foot ) increase inaltitude. The effect of altitude on horsepower will be greater thanthis if no carburetor modification is made. A reduction in enginehorsepower will reduce mowing performance.l-izG-lWhen the carburetor is modified for high altitude operation, theair-fuel mixture will be too lean for low altitude use. Operation ataltitudes below 1,800 meters (6,000 feet), with high altitudecarburetor modifications, may cause the engine to overheat andresult in serious engine damage. For low altitude use, reinstallthe standard main fuel jet, and readjust the pilot screw.

    STORAGEStorage Preparation

Proper storage preparation is essential for keeping your lawnmower trouble free and looking good. The following steps willhelp to keep rust and corrosion from impairing your mowersfunction and appearance, and will make the engine easier tostart when you use the mower again.Cleaning

Clean all surfaces of the mower, including the underside of themower deck. Wear heavy gloves to protect your hands from theblade. Before cleaning the undersideof the mower deck, be surethe throttle lever is in theSTOP position to shut OFFthe fuel valve. Rest the moweron its right side, so thecarburetor side is up. This willhelp to prevent fuel leakageand hard starting due tocarburetor flooding.1. Wash the mower with a garden hose or other low pressureequipment.2. If the mower has been running, allow the engine to cool for at

least half an hour before spraying water on it. Never spraywater on a hot engine. Cooling the engine too quickly cancause damage.3. Try to keep water away from controls, cable ends, wheel hubs, transmission and all other places that are difficult to dry ifwater enters as water may promote rust.4. After washing, set the mower in an upright position again,

remove as much standing water as possible with a dry cloth, start the engine outdoors, and let it run until it reaches normaloperating temperature to evaporate any water remaining onthe engine.5. With the engine running, operate the blade control lever 4 or 5times to expel water from the blade control mechanism. Allow theblade to spin for several minutes to ensure that no water remains.6. Stop the engine, and allow it to cool.66

    STORAGEFUEL

Gasoline will oxidize and deteriorate in storage. Old gasoline willcause hard starting, and it leaves gum deposits that clog the fuelsystem. If the gasoline in your mower deteriorates duringstorage, you may need to have the carburetor and other fuelsystem components, serviced or replaced. The length of time that gasoline can be left in your fuel tank andcarburetor without causing functional problems will vary withsuch factors as gasoline blend, your storage temperatures, andwhether the fuel tank is partially or completely filled. The air in apartially filled fuel tank promotes fuel deterioration. Very warmstorage temperatures accelerate fuel deterioration. Fueldeterioration problems may occur within a few months, or evenless if the gasoline was not fresh when you filled the fuel tank. The Distributors Limited Warranty does not cover fuel systemdamage or engine performance problems resulting fromneglected storage preparation. You can extend fuel storage life by adding a gasoline stabilizerthat is formulated for that purpose, or you can avoid fueldeterioration problems by draining the fuel tank and carburetor.

Adding a gasoline stabilizer to extend fuel storage life:When adding a gasoline stabilizer, fill the fuel tank with freshgasoline. If only partially filled, air in the tank will promote fueldeterioration during storage. If you keep a container of gasolinefor refueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline.1. Add gasoline stabilizer following manufactures instructions.2. After adding a gasolinestabilizer, run the engineoutdoors for 10 minutes to besure that treated gasoline hasreplaced the untreated gasolinein the carburetor.3. Stop the engine, and leave thethrottle lever in the STOPposition. This turns OFF thefuel valve between the fuel tankand the carburetor.

STORAGEDraining the Fuel Tank and Carburetor

    1. Remove the carburetordrain bolt with a 10 mmwrench, and drain thecarburetor bowl fuel into anapproved container.

Gasoline is highlyflammable and explosive. You can be burned orseriously injured. When working on fuelsystem connections:l Keep heat, sparks, andflames away.l Wipe up spillsimmediately.

    2. Move the throttle lever tothe SLOW or FASTposition to OPEN the fuelvalve. This will allow fuel inthe fuel tank to drainthrough the carburetor bowl.3. Reinstall the drain bolt.

Engine Oil1. Change the engine oil (seepage 46).2. Remove the spark plug (see

page 49). Pour a tablespoon(5 - 10 cc) of clean engineoil into the cylinder. Pull thestarter rope several times todistribute the oil in thecylinder. Reinstall the sparkplug.

    STORAGEStorage

If your mower will be stored with gasoline in the fuel tank andcarburetor, it is important to reduce the hazard of gasoline vaporignition. Select a well-ventilated storage area away from anyappliance that operates with a flame, such as a furnace, waterheater, or clothes dryer. Also avoid any area with aspark-producing electric motor, or where power tools areoperated. If possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity, because thatpromotes rust and corrosion.Unless all fuel has been drained from the fuel tank, leave thethrottle lever in the OFF position to CLOSE the fuel valve andreduce the possibility of fuel leakage.Place the mower with its wheels on a level surface. Tilting cancause fuel or oil leakage. The handlebar can be folded for compact storage:1. Loosen the handlebar locking knobs2. Spread the lower ends of the handlebar struts to release thelocking pins.3. Fold the handlebar forward, over the top of the mower.

When folding the handlebar, be careful to avoid kinking orpinching the control cables. With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the mower tokeep out dust. A hot engine and exhaust system can ignite ormelt some materials. Do not use sheet plastic as a dust cover.A nonporous cover will trap moisture around the mower, promoting rust and corrosion.

    STORAGERemoval From Storage

Check your mower as described in the BEFORE MOWINGchapter of this manual. If the fuel was drained during storage preparation, fill the tankwith fresh gasoline. If you keep a container of gasoline forrefueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline. Gasolineoxidizes and deteriorates over time, causing hard starting. If the cylinder was coated with oil during storage preparation, theengine will smoke briefly at startup. This is normal.
