Highlights of the May Meeting

Mark Steele welcomed meeting attendees. Glenn Orgeron led the Pledge of Allegiance. Mark announced the Club members total contri-butions to the Scholarship Fund is now just under $8500.

Per Club Guidelines (although 1 month late per vote of attendees ant the April meeting), elections were held. Dolf Strom was elected President, there were no candidates for Vice President and Joan Schenamsgruber was elected Treasurer. Club Officers and Directors as listed on page 4.

The entire Club wishes to thank Mark Steele for his extended service as Club President and his continuing service as a member of the Board.

Our featured speaker was Brian Anton, former pilot with over 30,000 hours for Southwest Air-lines and much more. For the entire presentation, Brian spoke extemporaneously, using photo-graphs from his extensive history with the USAF. He did, however, comment that some (if not all) of his photographs may, at one time, been classi-fied.

Brian didn’t plan on becoming a pilot until after joining ROTC (USAF). Trained at Del Rio flight school, he ultimately became part of the Military Airlift Command (MAC). Assignments included flights to Thailand, Diego Garcia and Viet Nam

including 3 trips into Saigon in support of the evacuation.

His resume also includes flying a C5 (800,000 lb TOGW) into Kenya with 8 F-5 fighters on board.

After leaving the Air Force, Brian joined Southwest Airlines flying Boeing 737s. He logged 24,000 hours in the 737.

After his ‘prepared presentation’, Brian spoke at length about contemporary issues in commercial aviation. In 10 years there will be a significant shortage of commercial pi-lots, due to fewer USAF retirees and the high cost of obtaining required ratings and flight hours.

He noted that there are over 50,000 daily flights within the US and many international airlines that fly into the US operate with for-eign certified pilots in command. Significant numbers of these pilots do not have the op-erational experience required by United States airlines. He felt that this was a signif-icant factor in the recent crashes of the B737MAX.

President’s Column

Hello everyone I am Dolf Strom your new President. I am starting this column with good and slightly good news. First, we changed our name to Honeywell–Garrett Retiree Club of Arizona. Since all new retirees had a Honeywell badge, Honeywell was added to the Club name to improve the chances of finding us when searching the Internet. We kept Garrett because that’s our history. The first meeting of the club was Feb 1984 when 6 people meet at the Stockyards restaurant. They met to discuss concerns about revisions to the pension plan. In 1991 the group grew and it was decided to get formally organized. Seven officers were elected of which two are still in the club. There are two documents on our Website, one dated June 1991 by Hal Hazel and one dated Feb 2000 by Warren Koepsel, who is still in the Club and operates the Fixit Guys.

Today the club has 536 members. In 2019, 36 left the club but there were only 2 new members, net loss of 34. To combat this trend, the club is doing an inaugural happy hour to be at Los Olivas, Scottsdale, immediately following the September meeting. All members and spouses are invited. Members who bring in a new member will both get free happy hour from the bar menu. So recruit new members and the drinks are on us.

Our Sep 4 speaker is Tim Mahoney, President, and CEO Honeywell Aerospace that contains our original Garrett founded by Cliff Garrett. Tim is always well attended and does a great job of pre-senting the state of our original Garrett plus the rest of Aerospace.

Lastly, of the 536 members, 93 receive the newsletter via paper mail because that is per your re-quest. The club is happy to do that but you should be aware the paper version has less content, fewer pictures, less jokes and the club is not in control of the distribution process. There were several times the newsletter was delivered after the meeting occurred. With the email version, the club is in control of the delivery and the newsletter has always been delivered on time. If you have Internet access and an email address I recommend you switch over.

So – welcome back from Summer and let’s have a great year for the Club.

Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm. Club Monthly Board Meetings will now be held at the Scottsdale Senior Center (same location as meetings) at 11:30 am in Room 10. Feel free to bring a lunch, meet with the Board and provide your thoughts and input.

Sept 4 Meeting – Tim Mahoney, Pres Honeywell Aerospace

Tim Mahoney is President and Chief Executive Officer of Hon-eywell Aerospace, Honeywell’s largest business group, headquar-tered in Phoenix, Arizona. Aerospace is managed through four businesses: Electronic Solutions, Engines and Power Systems, Mechanical Systems and Components, and Connected Aerospace.

Prior to becoming CEO, Tim served as President of the Business & General Aviation business, President of the Air Transport & Regional business, and as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). As CTO, Tim had global responsibilities for engineering, research and new product development, managing the company’s

R&D programs and more than 12,000 employees, as well as improving operational efficien-cy and engineering alignment for delivering new products to the market.

In leading the Air Transport & Regional business unit that serves OEM, airline, and after-market segments of commercial aviation, Tim strengthened customer relationships and de-velopment program execution on major systems for new aircraft platforms.

Tim typically will brief us on current performance and new activities and is more than will-ing to take questions.

Tim and the rest of Corporate Leadership must be doing something right as Honeywell stock currently sells within only a few percentage points of its all time high, even after having spun off 3 major business units.

Once again the popularity of the scholarship program has increased this year. Applications of next year are currently being reviewed. Thank you to the Garrett and Honeywell Retiree clubs as well as Honeywell International for their generous donations. The majority of the yearly total available funds come from contributions by individual members of the Garrett and Honeywell Retiree clubs. All of you who gave are making a difference in the lives of these deserving recipients.

Cost of a college education has been increasing yearly and our number of valid applicants has increased from 1 at program start to 12 for this year. So far, we have been able to award each of the qualified applicants with at least $1,000. Continued awards of this modest amount for each applicant will likely be impossible unless we can increase contributions. Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes. The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3), so donations should be tax deductible (check with your tax advisor). Please remember, students receiving these benefits are all family members of retired Honeywell and Garrett employees. By giving to this program, you will be directly helping the friends and family members of people you worked with for years.

Giving Back, with Honeywell and RTVOS HRSC – Doug Metzger

In line with our “giving back” culture, the retiree clubs will be invited once again to join Honeywell Aerospace and Rebuilding Together Valley of the Sun (RTVOS), for a “rebuilding” service project somewhere in the valley. RTVOS and Aerospace are planning an event this fall in the November time frame. It will be a community hous-ing/shelter event, performing tasks like maintenance and clean-up for folks who are unable to do so for themselves. In 2017 we helped out a needy school in Maryvale. In 2018 we helped to provide housing for homeless veterans.

It will be a great opportunity to support those in need in the valley, while spending quality time with other retir-ees and active employees. The specific tasks, as well as specific locations and dates, will be chosen this summer by Honeywell and RTVOS. There will always be a variety of work available to accommodate different skill levels. Tools and materials will be provided.

Place a note in your calendar to help this noble effort to give back. We’ll be publishing more details as they de-velop. Our point for this event is Doug Metzger. Doug is making a list now of interested people to contact first when we have more details. Your name on this list is NOT a commitment.
