Highlights of the February Meeting

Dolf Strom welcomed members and guests. Carl Landrum led the pledge.

Dolf asked for a vote of approval for the updated Club Guidelines. The updated Guidelines were approved by unanimous vote of attendees. Dolf announced that Gary Kains has volunteered to be the Fix-it Guys coordinator In addition, he announced the Club needs candidates for VP and Treasures. Treasurer is a critical Club elected position, so please consider standing for election later this spring. We also need a new Webmas-ter.

Our featured speaker was Al Stimac, talking about Selling and Buying on eBay. Why eBay? Getting rid of stuff helps downsizing; you get cash from sales; does anyone know what to do with your stuff when you are gone.

Stuff that sells easily on eBay includes collecti-bles such as books, stamps. Service pins – al-most anything. However, do your homework because ‘bottom fishers’ will buy anything and beware of spoofs and returns.

How to start? Signup on eBay is easy. A credit card is needed to create a PayPal account used to collect buyer’s money. Your fees can be paid through PayPal and money in your PayPal ac-count can be transferred directly to your bank.

If you are selling or buying on eBay you have to register. Ensure that your search is accurate and that if you are going to compete, determine your

top offer. You can tell eBay to compete in bidding up to your top offer and without com-petition you may pay less than you were will-ing to. If you win and find you purchase is not as described, eBay will refund your money. eBay is where all problems are resolved.

If you want to sell, start by choosing and easy ‘handle’ (eBay name for you). Search for pricing and descriptions of items similar to what you’re selling and steal text shamelessly using MS Word you refine your item infor-mation. Scan or use photos to display your wares. Titles are important and success de-pends on finding the right category for your items. Pricing below market will move stuff quickly. Be sure to accurately estimate cost of shipping/mailing, because offering free ship-ping is a good sales pitch.

Again, if you are selling, it is best if you offer free shipping, typically you should use USPS (post office) and determine if eBay can pro-vide discounted postage for your item.

Recognize that there are fees involved includ-ing eBay, postage and PayPal, and operating a store incurs a monthly charge with free listings depending how much you pay for your store.

Now go have fun, reduce clutter and make some money

50/50 winners were Volker Otto and Bob Rencenberger.

March 4 Meeting

Teddy Roosevelt’s famed Rough Riders were an all-volunteer cavalry that helped end the Spanish-American War of 1898 with a decisive victory in The Battle of San Juan Hill. Many of the Rough Riders were from the Arizona territory, and seven of them were affiliated with Tempe Normal School, now known as Arizona State University. Their bravery and connection to Roosevelt was cited as a contributing factor to Arizona’s path to statehood. Learn more about the Rough Riders’ connection to Tempe Normal School from ASU archivist Rob Spindler.

President’s Column

Our February meeting included a tutorial on how to sell on EBay by Al Stimac, a long time club member, and past Club executive. He presented a series of slides on the ins and outs of selling a large variety items on EBay.

Again the month had good news and bad news. The good news is that Gary Kains is now the new Fix-It Guys coordinator. Thank you Gary, Warren Koepsel can now retire after doing an out-standing job for our Club, HRSC, and AAC. The Fix-It Guys under Warren’s direction helped many club members.

Another good news item is that the Club members in attendance at the February meeting approved the revised Guidelines. Mark Steele led this project. Thank you Mark

Bad news is that our Treasurer and now Vice-president will both resign at the end of this season, May 2020.

Elections for Club officials are coming up in April. There are four elected positions, President, Vice president, Treasurer, and Secretary. At this time we know that we need candidates for Vice-president and Treasurer. The Club has around 500 members, surely there are two people that would step up and become candidates. If you ever had a desire to win an election this one is a shoe in. The National Presidential candidates wish it would be this easy to win. Please volunteer.

We also need a Webmaster. This is an opportunity for younger, recent retiree to help the Club.

This month we will try something new to recruit volunteers for the three positions. Our Club will shortly be selecting seven charities for this season. We already gave to one. If you volunteer to be a Vice-president or Treasurer or Webmaster, you can select your favorite non-profit charity for a $100 donation. Here is a way to support your favorite non-profit charity and do good for the Club.

New Honeywell Corporate policy prevents providing the Club with names of new retirees or deceased em-ployees. We need all Club Members to inform us if you know of a new retiree or the passing of a former employee.

Editor’s Corner

Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm. Club Monthly Board Meetings will now be held at the Scottsdale Senior Center (same location as meetings) at 11:00 am in Room 10. Feel free to bring a lunch, meet with the Board and provide your thoughts and input.

Monthly Charity News

Our club donates to two types of recipients using two sources of funds. From our dues, we allocate $100 per month to local non-profit charities. Consideration is given to charities that provided speakers to our monthly meetings. At the January Meeting, the Club gave $100 to the Herpetological Sanctuary. Additional donations will be selected at the May Board Meeting and reported in the following September Newsletter. A list of the charities that we have supported in the past is posted on our website. If you have a favorite char-ity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our attention.

Also from our dues, we donate $100 per month, $800 total, and another $1500 per year ($2300 total) to the Scholarship Foundation. In addition our members can donate directly to the Scholarship Foundation. Mem-ber donations to date are $6008.

Hello fellow Honeywell retirees! My name is Cheryl Wiley. I am the Scholarship Board’s new Chairperson. A great big THANK YOU to Gwen Scheetz and Jim Redmond for all their help as they transition off the Board, and new people volunteering their time for this worthy cause. Please welcome our new Board members Paul Christopherson, Mary Harris and Brian Unsworth. We look forward to implementing the Board’s goals for this Application and Award season.

THANK YOU to everyone who made donations last year. All of you who gave are making a difference in the lives of our deserving recipients. The cost of a college education has been in-creasing yearly. And as you’ve probably seen in the news recently, student loan debt is at an all-time high. Our recipients are very grateful for your generous donations, as is the Board!

Students receiving our scholarships are all family members of retired Honeywell & Garrett em-ployees. By giving to this program, you will be directly helping the friends and family mem-bers of people you worked with for years. Applications will be accepted starting December 1 and are due no later than April 1, 2020. If you have a family member who would qualify for our scholarship, please send them an application and encourage them to submit it in a timely man-ner. Applications can be found on our website at www.hrcaz.org. Click on the Scholarships tab on the left side of the page.

Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes. The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3) so donations should be tax deductible on your state and federal returns (check with your tax advi-sor).

If you would like to donate at any time throughout our fiscal year, please make your check pay-able to: Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation

Southwest Airlines Tour Wednesday, April 15, 2010, 10:00 a.m.

This is a unique opportunity to tour Southwest Airlines Maintenance Fa-cility at Sky Harbor Airport.

You may be able to walk through an aircraft and sit in the cockpit then tour the maintenance and operation areas in a two hour guided tour. You will find out why the first aircraft were painted those colors, how the fit an aircraft that is too big into the hanger and maybe debate the correct part numbers of the APS we see in the stores. Last year we sat in an aircraft only 5 flight hours old and not yet entered service. Yes it had the new aircraft smell.

Names of attendees are required in advance for security purposes. The group is limited to 40 for practical reasons.

To register send the full names of all in your party to Keith Hughes at [email protected] or call 623-825-5243 for details.

He is engraved in stone in the National War Memorial in

Washington , DC- back in a small alcove where very few

people have seen it. For the WWII generation, this will

bring back memories. For you younger folks, it's a bit of

trivia that is a part of our American history. Anyone born

in 1913 to about 1950, is familiar with Kilroy. No one

knew why he was so well known- but everybody seemed to

get into it.

So who was Kilroy?

In 1946 the American Transit Association, through its ra-

dio program, "Speak to America ," sponsored a nation-

wide contest to find the real Kilroy, offering a prize of a

real trolley car to the person who could prove himself to

be the genuine article. Almost 40 men stepped forward to

make that claim, but only James Kilroy from Halifax ,

Massachusetts , had evidence of his identity.

Page 13: HONEYWELL-GARRETT RETIREES CLUB OF ARIZONA Cliff Notesgarrettretireesaz.com/uploads/3/4/8/4/34847261/20_3_mar... · 2020-02-28 · Cliff Notes PO Box 11633, ... Learn more about the

'Kilroy' was a 46-year old shipyard worker during the war

who worked as a checker at the Fore River Shipyard in

Quincy . His job was to go around and check on the num-

ber of rivets completed. Riveters were on piecework and

got paid by the rivet. He would count a block of rivets and

put a check mark in semi-waxed lumber chalk, so the riv-

ets wouldn't be counted twice. When Kilroy went off duty,

the riveters would erase the mark.

Later on, an off-shift inspector would come through and

count the rivets a second time, resulting in double pay for

the riveters.

Page 14: HONEYWELL-GARRETT RETIREES CLUB OF ARIZONA Cliff Notesgarrettretireesaz.com/uploads/3/4/8/4/34847261/20_3_mar... · 2020-02-28 · Cliff Notes PO Box 11633, ... Learn more about the

One day Kilroy's boss called him into his office. The fore-

man was upset about all the wages being paid to riveters,

and asked him to investigate. It was then he realized what

had been going on. The tight spaces he had to crawl in to

check the rivets didn't lend themselves to lugging around a

paint can and brush, so Kilroy decided to stick with the

waxy chalk. He continued to put his check mark on each

job he inspected, but added 'KILROY WAS HERE' in

king-sized letters next to the check, and eventually added

the sketch of the chap with the long nose peering over the

fence and that became part of the Kilroy message.

Once he did that, the riveters stopped trying to wipe away

his marks. Ordinarily the rivets and chalk marks would

have been covered up with paint. With the war on, howev-

er, ships were leaving the Quincy Yard so fast that there

wasn't time to paint them. As a result, Kilroy's inspection

"trademark" was seen by thousands of servicemen who

boarded the troopships the yard produced.

His message apparently rang a bell with the servicemen,

because they picked it up and spread it all over Europe

and the South Pacific.

Before war's end, "Kilroy" had been here, there, and eve-

rywhere on the long hauls to Berlin and Tokyo . To the

troops outbound in those ships, however, he was a com-

plete mystery; all they knew for sure was that someone

named Kilroy had "been there first." As a joke, U.S. ser-
