From the EditorA number of important scientific activities, including the Annual Scientific Congress of the College, were held in this second quarter of the year. Some are solely organized by the College, while others were held in collaboration with other academic or professional organizations. Other than the 16th South China International Congress of Cardiology which was held in Guangzhou, all the other meetings were held locally. The last scientific session of this quarter ends with the Scientific Meeting of Echo Chapter on 28 June 2014. This is the first meeting organized by the College for the purpose of teaching on the use of echocardiography in the diagnosis and management of cardiac patients, and for sharing of advance knowledge and skill of echocardiography.

Scientific activity will not be completely dormant in this hot summer time. One day meetings on cardiac MRI and the Heart Rhythm Refresher Course Module 2 on heart failure and CRT will be held in July and August respectively.

The rest of the year would then be a busy period for College activities. Scientific activities will include the 5th Asian Preventive Cardiology & Cardiac Rehabilitation Conference, and the Cardiovascular Interventional Summit.

Community activities will be in full swing. Preparation for the activities of World Heart Day 2014 is in active progress. The World Rope Skipping Champions 2014, jointly organized by the College and the Hong Kong Rope Slipping Association with over a thousand participants from all over the world, will be held in August. The Heart Safe School Project is completing its PHASE III enrollment for participating schools.

All these activities would not be possible without the active participation and contribution from members of the College. It has been very encouraging to see increasing number of members, particularly increasing numbers of young and newly qualified cardiologists, are participating actively in the scientific and community activities of the College. They serve as members in various committees, as chairpersons and speakers in scientific meetings, as speakers in community activities on heart health, and as judges in heart health promotion competitions.

The number of qualified Specialist in Cardiology among the registered medical practitioners in Hong Kong is small. We have to maintain solidarity to forward the mission of the College, for the benefits of the medical professionals as well as the general public.

Heart Safe School Project The Phase II of the Jockey Club ‘Heart-safe School’ Project (JCHSS) has been started. There were 2,789 school personnel from 265 schools trained the use of automatic external defibrillator (AED) with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in Phase II. Total 5,950 school personnel from 577 schools were trained under the Phase I and II of the JCHSS Project as at 9 May 2014. As at 31 May 2014, all 338 schools (joined in Phase II) were site assessed and AED will be installed in due course.

Twenty nine members of the College were invited to speak in the Health Educational Talks of JCHSS. As at 31 May 2014, 35 Health Educational Talks were held, and more health talks will be organized between June and July 2014. The audience were principals, school personnel, parents and students. All were enthusiastic to attend and to learn about prevention of heart disease and promotion of heart health. We are grateful for the contribution of these members.
