HONOR CITIZEN AWARD Steve and Marilyn Brunner were both born in 1939 and have been married for 55 years. Steve was born in Battle Creek but graduated from Athens High School and attended Michigan State University and Western Michigan University. Marilyn was born in Coldwater. She graduated Coldwater High School and attended Kellogg Community College and Western Michigan University. She is a registered nurse. They have two daughters, Stephanie and Rebecca, three grand children and two great grandchildren. Steve owned Brunner Insurance Agency in Athens from 1961 through 2003. Marilyn and Steve owned and operated the Pistolero Gun Shop from 1981-1090. They currently own and operate Hammerstone Farm Storage. Steve has been in business in Athens Township continuously for 53 years. BOB LING COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Terri Norris was born and raised in the Athens area and has been a lifetime resident and community volunteer. She was a single parent - raising two children on her own and now has three grandchildren. Ms. Norris graduated Athens Area Schools. She completed all of her higher education through night classes while working full time jobs. Degrees from Kellogg Community College, Associates Applied Science - Legal Assistant Siena Heights University, B.S. - Law Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University, Juris Doctor earned by Terri and became a member of the Michigan State Bar in 2002. She is a practicing attorney and has served in the Branch County Prosecutors office for more than 10 years as an Assistant Prosecutor as well as the Elected Prosecuting Attorney. Terri is currently in private practice and currently services Branch, Calhoun and St. Joseph counties. Terri sat as a council member and participant in a number of organizations including: Branch County 4-H, The Council for Children, Elder Abuse Council, Member of the OES and Youth In Government. Terri has also been a member of the Athens Community Association, where she was the organizer and director of the Athens Homecoming Parade for a number of years. ATHENS AREA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HALL OF FAME Fred May was born May 14th., 1884 and died Feb. 4th., 1971. He was well respected and well known for his humor, practical jokes, friendliness and working to help people in the community. He knew everyone in Athens, those that lived on the Reservation and most farmers from miles around. Fred owned and operated Mays Meat Market through the depression and into the early 1950’s. He helped many Athens residents in their time of need. He helped the Indians from the Reservation by trading food for their hand made baskets. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and honored as Athens Citizen of the Year in the late 60’s. Fred was one of the founders of the Mens Choir at the Congregational Church. He loved to sing and sang in the choir right up to his death. He performed at many Athens Spring festivals and played base drum in the Athens Community Band. He was in the harness horse business and made a track with Gay Warren just south of town. His wife, E Lone May taught school for more than 20 years. Fred was a True Athens Man, a man of character and integrity. Shirley Frederick was born in 1931 in Pinckney, Michigan, but grew up in Hell, Michigan. She and Paul moved to East Leroy in 1952. She attended Eastern Michigan College, graduated Western Michigan University and began teaching at Pennfield Schools. She taught at Athens Old Elementary, Old Athens Elementary, Pennfield, again, Union City, and was back teaching 4th grade at East Leroy Elementary in 1966. She was considered a strict and innovative teacher. She retired in 1989. Shirley has been a volunteer most of her life. She is active in the Athens Area Lions Club at local, District, State and International levels, Athens Methodist Church, Athens Area Community Foundation, Athens Community Association, and VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Additional volunteering at Binder Park Zoo, 4-H, Follies, State Educational committees, as well as many other youth and community activities meant she usually cooked in a Crock Pot. She spends a lot of time playing on the computer and can always suggest how to get things done. Paul and Shirley had two delightful children, Georgia Ann, deceased, Paul Lee (wife, Donna) living in Burlington & 4 granddaughters and 7 step great grandchildren. THE ROYAL COURT Hannah Fairchild is the daughter of Meg and Craig Fairchild. She is being escorted by Austin Cole. Hanna is a member of National Honor Society, Basketball, Softball, Girls Varsity, Environmental, and Spanish Clubs and attended duel enrolment at KCC. She is also active in Athens Area Foundations Youth Activity Committee, and Travel Softball With the Hurricanes. Hanna volunteers at the Childrens Water Festival, umpires Little League Softball, helped sell and pass out gifts for a Valentine fundraiser, raised money and went shopping to get supplies for those in need around the holidays and volunteer at the synchronized ice skating event held in Kalamazoo. Teasha Swank is the daughter of Keith and Colleen Swank. She if being escorted by Jacob Liles. Teasha is an active member of Student Council, Spanish Club, Environmental Club, Youth Advisory Committee, National Honor Society, SADD, Girls Varsity Club, Youth In Government, Athens Equestrian Team, 4-H, and is Captain of the Girls Volleyball Team. She is a volunteer as a summer tutor, assistant coach for Girl s On the Run, Volleyball & Basketball team Youth Camps, painting tables at the park, Historical Societys Cemetery Tour, Wings Stadium ice skating competition, and KidsFest. Teasha plans on attending college to pursue a career in social work. Shaylynn Tebo is the daughter of Larry and Shellly Tebo. She is being escorted by Gabe Golyar. Throughout high school she has been involved in Volleyball, Basketball, Cross Country, and Track as well as Environmental Club, Girls Varsity Club, Prom committee, Spanish Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, and Youth Advisory Committee. Shaylynn has been a volunteer at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility, assist at Athens Blood Drives, SADDs Trunk or Treat, and Middle School track meets. She is employed at Station 66. She has taken advantage of duel enrollment at KCC and plans on completing her Associate there, then transfer to a higher University. She is still considering her options for a field of study.
