ISSUE 1
Honoring All Veterans at SSC
By: Kristin Liepold
At a special Veteran’s Day program on Monday, students of SSC
and Community members honored Veterans for all they have done in the
service of our country.
The program started off with the posting of the colors by members
of the Seivert-Peterson Post # 608 and the Herbert K. Kellam Post #224. To
honor America, the Pledge of Allegiance was spoken, and the SSC band
performed the National Anthem.
There was a short presentation by Stuart Schumacher, Sadie Volk,
and Jennifer Jimenez, the 2012 Boy’s and Girl’s State representatives.
Stuart began by talking about what he learned at Boy’s State, particularly
how the government system works, and how to make laws. “It is a long
process to make laws,” Schumacher said during his presentation. “We
fought to make it a law to have Ultimate Frisbee played as one of the
games.” Sadie Volk and Jennifer Jimenez talked about their experiences at
Girl’s State. Jenny’s favorite part of Girl’s State was the Candle Light
Ceremony representing each veteran who has died in Minnesota. Sadie grew
fond of learning about the subject of why we are Americans. Volk now
knows why we burn a tattered flag rather than throw it away. She knows
flag etiquette and the real meaning of Veterans Day. Volk encourages all
juniors to consider going to Girl’s or Boy’s State.
The SSC Elementary Flag Squad performed a routine with the
elementary choir singing “We Celebrate America.” The elementary and high
school choirs then sang a song called “A Champion for Peace.” Joni
Garrison and Kevin Huseth directed the choirs.

Jeff Johnson wanted to enlist in the army. On New Year’s Eve of 1970, Johnson went to boot camp.
Johnson expressed that they definitely taught discipline there. His first assignment was to go overseas
and fight in Vietnam. “It was my first time actually being so far away from home,” Johnson added. A
major burst of energy for any veteran is support or gift packages from friends and family. “I loved when
my grandma gave a package because there would always be small, yummy cookies inside,” Johnson
explained. Jeff Johnson fought for six years.
The program continued on with another musical piece by the elementary and high school
choirs. The SSC band, under the direction of Kevin Huseth, performed “General Grant March” to end the
musical side of the 2012 Veterans Day Program.
The Veterans Day Program ended with the retiring of the colors.
On the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, at the eleventh hour of 1918, WWI ended with
Germany formally signing the Armistice. Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th of every year. It
is the day to honor all men and women, living or deceased, who have fought for our freedom. It was
once called Remembrance Day and Armistice Day. President Woodrow Wilson started Armistice Day on
November 11, 1919. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill to make it a national holiday on
May 26, 1954. On June 1, 1954, Congress changed the name from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day.”
Remember to thank a Veteran for all he or she has done for our country, for freedom is not
truly free.

Entertainment coming to “Student Concept”
By: Ernesto Fonseca
In this amazing section of the Student Concept, we will inform you about some of the latest
music, movies, video games, and technology.
There will be an article about music every week, which will consist of five genres, listing the
top five hits for each one. The genres will be hip-hop, rap, country, rock, and metal.
Sometimes there will be an article on movies that gives a good summary about the film, actors,
and director. The movies will either be coming to theaters, are already in theaters, or out on DVD. There
will be quite a variety on the types of movies that will be explained from horror to comedy and from
action to romance.
Another major growing production that we will talk about is the video game industry, which
seems to be growing quite a bit in recent years. The video games we will talk about will most likely be
new releases. From time to time, we will have some blasts from the past and review some games that
helped drive the video game industry into the right direction. We will discuss what brought those games
into becoming a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide.
Finally, the thing that helps us communicate through the web when thousands of miles away or
just a block or two away is technology. Technology is something that is distributed and created
worldwide. We will inform you of the latest technology, and this will range from new cell phones,
laptops, desktops, and TV’s. I really hope Student Concept’s entertainment section keeps you well
informed of the music, movies, video games, and technology of the 21-Century.

Mr. Jacobsen is the art teacher at Southwest Star Concept. We
asked him what his hair was like when he was in high school, and he said it
was funny, long, and parted down the middle. When asked about how he
met his wife, he responded, “At a wedding. I was like the best man and she
was like a personal attendant; she sucked at it. I asked her to dance and what
not.” In high school, Mr. Jacobsen was in sports and worked at Pizza Ranch.
We asked him what he does when he isn’t teaching, and he said, “Coaching,
hanging out with my son and wife, travelling a lot, playing ball in summer,
coaching ball in summer, illustrating books. Mainly everything starts with
my son, Gavin. We hang out a lot. I like movies and music.” He said he
would really miss Kraig Stenzel because “He’s a cool kid.” When asked
about an embarrassing memory he has had, he replied, “Like, my whole life.
I did a lot of dumb stuff. I’d ask this girl out in Jackson everyday from
seventh grade to senior year… shot down every time. I blew my face up in a
camp fire.”

In an interview with Keith Place, head coach of the girls basketball program, we asked what he
anticipated for the upcoming season. He replied, “I hope we can expand on our basketball skills, play as a
team, and develop the talent to be competitive every game.” When asked what he thought the team would
have to work on the most this year, he responded, “We need to work on fundamentals, ball handling, and
passing the ball. Hopefully we can develop our skills.” Place also noted the toughest teams this season for
the Wildcats are expected to be Fulda, SWC, Adrian, and Westbrook. Good luck this year, go Wildcats!!!

beneficial to us, and you would get to display the great times you have shared. Pictures that are submitted
must be appropriate and must be related to the school. The only prize for sending in pictures will be the
pleasure of seeing your photo displayed to the entire school in the paper and the community on the web.
At the end of the week Catelyn LaCour and Riley Lentz will select the pictures worthy enough for the

Assassin’s Creed III Review
By: Ernesto Fonseca
“There I was, climbing ledge-to-ledge, tree-to-tree, approaching
ever-closer to my target. I jumped off a two-story tall building, landing
without injury, but as I landed, I managed to alert Redcoats, also known as
British Soldiers. I sprinted through alleyways, taking sharp turns, dodging
market carts, and shoving people out of my way while trying to escape the
Redcoats. The guards fired their muskets while I managed to grab a
Redcoat, only to use him as my meat-shield. I ran until I escaped my
pursuers and my target was finally in sight. I climbed atop a building and
waited at the edge for the captain of the Redcoats to approach. As he walked
right under the ledge, I launched an attack. Leaping down with my hidden
blade, the captain managed to break my 50-foot drop. My hidden blade had
pierced his neck, and I managed to get the bit of information I needed to
start a Revolutionary War, to rebuild the Legacy of the Assassins Creed
Brotherhood.” – Ernesto’s experience with ACIII
Assassin’s Creed is a much-anticipated game series that began in
2007. The trilogy consists of 5 main installments, and 5 other little add-ons
that are not based on the main story-line. The newest installment,
“Assassin’s Creed III”, was released on October 31, 2012. Set against the
backdrop of the American Revolution in the late 18th century, Assassin’s
Creed III introduces a new hero, Ratonnake:ton, of Native American and
English heritage. Adopting the name Connor, he becomes the new voice for
justice in the ancient war between the assassins and Templers. Players
become an assassin in the War for Liberty against ruthless tyranny in the
most stylized and fluid combat experiences in the franchise, to-date.
Assassin’s Creed III spans the Revolutionary War, taking gamers from the
vibrant untamed frontier to busting colonial towns and the intense, chaotic
battlefields where George Washington’s Continental Army clashed with the
imposing British Army.
Desmond Miles, who is one of the main characters of this game
series, goes back to experience the genetic memories of his Revolutionary
War-era ancestor, Connor. At this time Connor battles an evil group of
people called the Templars. The Templars are strange people who don’t like
the way the world is at the moment, so they are trying to destroy civilization
so they can rebuild it in their vision. Assassin’s Creed III takes place during,
before, and after the American Revolution, but don’t expect a patriotic love
letter to the founding fathers! Instead, you will find a historically accurate
and fairly cynical portrait of our country’s founding. There will undoubtedly
be some controversy about this video game. Learn our actual history before
worshiping some romanticized version that never happened. I would highly
recommend this game for those who strive for adventure and love to learn
about history.
This game is rated “M” for mature. (17 years or older to buy)
The Platforms for this game are for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and
PC.

Galaxy S3 Review By: Walker Crocker
The Galaxy S3 was revealed to the public May 3, 2012, at Earls
Court in London. This phone has many awesome features such as an eye
tracking device, S beam, Burst Shot, and Best Photo.
The eye tracking device is a nice addition to the Samsung S3. As long as
your eyes are on the screen, it won’t dim or turn off.
S Beam allows the users to transfer videos or picture just by
touching their phones together. Not all devices will be S Beam compatible,
but in the near future Samsung hopes to make that happen.
Burst shot allows you to take 20 pictures in under 1 minute, while using
Best Picture will pick out the best picture that came out of the bunch.
