Program
How do I earn an award at and an invite to the honors awards
ceremony at the end of the year?
How do I get an invite?
• You will get an invitation to the honors awards program (underclassmen or
senior) if you have received at least one of the awards described in the pages
that follow this one.
• For awards relying on academic standing (overall weighted averages or
grades), students must meet the specific grade requirements by the grade pull
at the end of April.
• This is a deadline set forth by the county. Any student who does not meet the specific
requirements for grade-related awards by this grade pull date will not be included even
if averages/grades increase after that date and before the honors award program date.
Freshmen Honor Roll
• Freshmen who have no grade less than an 80 at the time of the honors
program grade draw are listed as Ninth Grade HONOR ROLL students
• Grades for this award will be pulled by the county at the end of April.
Academic Excellence
• Eligible students: Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors
• Students who achieve ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE hold a cumulative weighted numerical average of 90% or above.
• The first time students are awarded this honor, they receive a varsity letter, a lamp of knowledge pin, and a year pin.
• In each succeeding year that they have a qualifying average, they are awarded the year pins only to accompany their original letter.
• Seniors who have qualifying average will also receive a red and white cord to wear at graduation.
• Grades for this award will be pulled by the county at the end of April.
Departmental Awards
• DEPARTMENAL CERTIFICATES are presented to students who are
deemed to be the most outstanding in a specific course, based upon effort,
interest, and achievement.
• These awards are based on nominations and voting by the teachers in each
course.
• Awarded to students at all grade levels
Pathway Completers
• PATHWAY COMPLETERS have successfully completed a minimum
three-course sequence in a chosen CTAE field.
• Students will receive a certificate as well as a cord to wear at graduation.
• Students will be recognized at the honors award ceremony as well as a
separate CTAE program ceremony.
• Awarded to students at all grade levels once they finish a pathway
The University of Georgia Certificates of Merit
• Students are awarded the CERTIFICATE OF MERIT if they are in the
top 5% of the JUNIOR class, based upon academic average.
• Grades for this award will be pulled by the county at the end of April.
Governor’s Honors Program
• This award will be presented to students who were nominated by their
teachers in a specific field and were interviewed at the county and state levels.
• State finalists have earned the opportunity to attend the Governor’s Honors
Program at Valdosta State University this summer, participating in six weeks
of intensive study in their chosen fields.
Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl
• Members of the reading bowl team read 20 assigned books, then practice
and compete in quiz bowl format.
Citizenship Award
• The CITIZENSHIP MEDAL is awarded by the assistant principal to the
student who is distinguished through positive actions.
• Awarded to one underclassman and one senior
Scholarship Medal
• The SCHOLARSHIP MEDAL is given by the Assistant Principal for
Curriculum and Instruction honoring the underclassman who has excelled
academically throughout rigorous coursework and testing.
• Awarded to one underclassman and one senior
The Coca-Cola Awards
• These awards are for SENIORS elected by the faculty for outstanding
achievement.
• Awards are given for Citizenship, Fine Arts, the Golden Helmet,
Basketball, and Academics
The Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete
Award
• This award is present to one male and one female SENIOR athlete in
recognition of outstanding academic and athletic performance.
STAR Student
• The STAR Student is the senior who ranks in the top 10% of the class and
scored the highest on the SAT.
International Skills Diploma Seal
• This award is given to SENIORS who complete an international education
curriculum and engage in extracurricular activities that foster the
achievement of global competencies.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Cup
• This award is given to the SENIOR who is voted by the faculty as the best
all-around senior, based upon the entire high school career.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian
• VALEDICTORIAN is awarded to the SENIOR who has the highest
weighted numerical average for the four years of high school study.
• SALUTATORIAN is awarded to the SENIOR who has the second highest
weighted numerical average during their high school career.
• Grades for these awards and class rank will be pulled by the county at the
end of April.
Honors Societies
• Students considered to have “good standing” in the following academic honor societies will get recognized at the honors awards program
• Spanish Honor Society
• French Honors Society
• German Honor Society
• National English Honor Society
• National History Honor Society
• National Science Honor Society
• National Art Honor Society
• Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society)
• National Honor Society
