Working On Campus and How It Could Work for You

Attaining a college degree can be challenging in its own right; however, doing it while working a job is a whole other feat. While it can be tough, according to freshman honors student, Joseph Powell, it is worth the time. He works at the Marshall Rec rock wall. Rock climbing is one of his passions, and he discussed that "the best part of his job is being able to meet people with similar interests." Since he enjoys what he does, it makes the job fun and worthwhile. He explains that while doing both to the best of his ability can be challenging, it has improved his time management skills. He recommends that other students try to find something they are passionate about on campus and try to find a job within that area. Joseph said, "if you do it, don't do something that you don't already enjoy doing."

Hunter Pack, another honors student and a Resident Advisor (RA), explained that working on campus is

a great way to get involved and meet people. He said, "I've found my closest friends through my job, and it has completely changed my college experience." He advises that students get a job only if they have the time. He elaborated by saying, "you can't allow it to make your grades go down, but you also can't let your coworkers down by constantly canceling on them." Hunter summarized his overall experience by saying, "Although it may not be the most fun thing to do at times, working on campus does allow you to become more involved with the university."

In general, finding a job you usually enjoy makes life come into a balance much easier. Whether it be working in your passion or a field that you enjoy or making great new connections with others, a job is a great way to get involved and make some money along the way.

Marshall University’s Campus Activities Board, or CAB, is a studentrun organization that puts on events that all students are welcome to attend and take part in. CAB has made all sorts of fun events possible, including their DoItYourself series which covered a variety of different crafts such as handknitting, calligraphy, essential oil mixing, dirty pours, macramé plant hanger assembly, bath bomb making,

embroidery, and many more. Students enjoy these events because they provide an outlet to “destress” during the semester in addition to being a way to connect with others on campus. Not only are CAB events enjoyable for students, they are also completely free.

CAB is based on student input, so many students join as a way to become more involved with the

Marshall community and help plan and carry out the different events. “I really enjoy being a part of CAB because I have a say in the events on campus. As a dietetics major, I’m not on campus very often, so this allows me to be more involved. It has also allowed me to meet new people that I wouldn’t normally meet!”,” Maggie Smart, a senior dietetics major, said. “My favorite event that we’ve put on was cosmic bowling. During my

freshman year, they had free bowling for students once a month, and it was always super fun,” she said.

CAB’s most recent event was a Paint and Sip of the university’s fountain on November 10th. The next event CAB is taking part in this semester is Herd Holiday. Herd Holiday, which is taking place on December 2nd, is put on by different organizations around campus. It involves all kinds of festive activities including a tree lighting and pictures with Santa Marco. “I really enjoy being in CAB because I wanted to help out with the activities

that campus put on,” Jackson Smart, a senior criminal justice major, said. If you would also like to help out with different events on campus or learn more information about the various activities they organize, you can go to www.marshall.edu/CAB or email [email protected].

Honorable Mention: Brendin Flinn

Brendin has been a member of the Honors College at Marshall since matriculating to the university in the Fall of 2018 after graduating from Parkersburg South High School. During his time as a student at Marshall, he has worked towards completing a degree in Biology, with a goal of attending medical school for a dual enrollment MD/Ph.D program with a focus on cardiovascular health. Concurrent with his studies for Biology, he has also worked to complete minors in PreHealth Professions, Chemistry, Psychology, and Communications.

Outside of purely academic studies, Brendin has proven his adeptness as in communication numerous times as a competitor for the Thundering Word Forensics Team, placing highly at the national tournament in 2019 in his various events. In addition to competing

in forensics, he has also shown his prowess for writing by winning the annual Dan O’Hanlon essay competition for the last two years.

Yet, his achievements do not stop there. After receiving grant funding through the Creative Summers Research Grant opportunity as an undergraduate student, Brendin began working in a research laboratory under Dr. Santanam in April of 2020. In his time since joining their lab, he has been published as a first author in his work “Dual Role for Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Infection and Cardiac Fat” that was published in Obesity Reviews. As well, he has another publication in IJMS and presented a poster this summer. He has been twice the recipient of the NASA Space Grant Consortium in addition to the American

Heart Association undergraduate research grant.

Brendin intends to graduate in the spring of 2022 and take a gap year before attending medical school to further his research portfolio prior to matriculation.
