Honors Student Involvement

Asia Tour with the UNO Jazz Band Emily Berry

,�UHFHQWO\�UHWXUQHG�IURP�D�WULS�ZLWK�WKH�812�-D]]�%DQG�WR�$VLD��where we spent almost two weeks performing, collaborating, and OHDUQLQJ��2XU�¾UVW�GHVWLQDWLRQ�ZDV�6KL]XRND��-DSDQ��2PDKDµV�¾UVW�sister city. We played a concert with the Shizuoka University jazz ensemble and were given time to talk to them about their life and FXOWXUH��$OO�RI�WKH�VWXGHQWV�KDG�YHU\�DGYDQFHG�(QJOLVK�VSHDNLQJ�skills and were so kind.

My favorite performance was at the Daidogei World Cup in Shizuoka. This is a street performance festival that LQYROYHV�RYHU�QLQHW\�SHUIRUPLQJ�JURXSV�IURP�¾IWHHQ�GLIIHUHQW�FRXQWULHV��7KH�IHVWLYDO�LV�KHOG�LQ�WKH�GRZQWRZQ�area and has about forty different performance locations. Thousands of people attend the event every year and its purpose is to celebrate the arts and bring life to the city. Our last stop was China, where we had performances at Xi’an Jiaotong University and China University of Petroleum. These are very prestigious universities in China, and we had the privilege to get to know some of the students going to school there. We were able to work with a Chinese folk music ensemble and learn about some

of the unique traditional instruments that they use. They were also H[WUHPHO\�LQWHUHVWHG�LQ�RXU�FXOWXUH��DQG�WKH\�KDG�PDQ\�TXHVWLRQV�DERXW�life in America. Many of the students that we met plan on coming to study at some prestigious American universities, like Stanford or Harvard. 3ULRU�WR�WKLV�WULS��,�KDG�QR�XQGHUVWDQGLQJ�RI�$VLDQ�FXOWXUH��(YHU\�SHU�VRQ�ZH�PHW�LQ�-DSDQ�DQG�&KLQD�ZDV�JHQHURXV��IULHQGO\��DQG�VLQFHUH��,�DP�VR�JUDWHIXO�WR�KDYH�KDG�WKH�RSSRUWXQLW\�WR�WUDYHO�ZLWK�812��,W�really opened my eyes and gave me a better understanding of the world we live in.

Running and Winning Erin Wiebe

Amongst the monotony of classes to attend, papers to write, and tests to study for, it is easy to get caught up LQ�WKH�HYHU\GD\�URXWLQH�RI�FROOHJH�OLIH��7KDWµV�ZK\�H[SHULHQFHV�OLNH�5XQQLQJ�DQG�:LQQLQJ�DUH�VR�LPSRUWDQW��6HUYLFH�OHDUQLQJ�RSSRUWXQLWLHV�OLNH�WKLV�RQH�UHPLQG�XV�RI�WKH�YDOXH�LQ�GRLQJ�WKLQJV�IRU�RWKHUV��,Q�3URIHVVRU�Rita Shaughnessy’s Honors Public Speaking class this semester, we partnered with the National League RI�:RPHQ�9RWHUV�WR�KRVW�D�V\PSRVLXP�IRU�ORFDO�IHPDOH�KLJK�VFKRRO�VWXGHQWV�DQG�IHPDOH�SROLWLFLDQV���7KH�purpose of this event was to break down stereotypes about female politicians and to get some of the girls in attendance more interested in politics.

7KH�LQWHUDFWLRQV�WKDW�ZHUH�IRVWHUHG�DW�5XQQLQJ�DQG�:LQQLQJ�ZHUH�QRW�RQO\�EHQH¾FLDO�WR�WKH�KLJK�VFKRRO�students in attendance, but to the college students lending a hand as well. As part of the curriculum for this Honors class, we prepared the research and maps for the girls to use in their mock election activity. Addi�tionally, some of the class prepared decorations for the event and still others went to the event and served DV�IDFLOLWDWRUV�DW�WKH�WDEOHV��,W�ZDV�DQ�H[FHOOHQW�H[SHULHQFH�WR�ZDON�WKHVH�JLUOV�WKURXJK�WKH�SURFHVV�RI�VRUWLQJ�WKURXJK�WKH�LQIRUPDWLRQ�DQG�IRUPXODWLQJ�SHUVXDVLYH�VSHHFKHV���6RPH�RI�WKH�JLUOV�VHHPHG�WR�UHDOO\�EHQH¾W�IURP�WKH�H[SHULHQFH�DQG�ZHUH�LQVSLUHG�E\�WKH�IHPDOH�SROLWLFLDQV�DQG�WKHLU�PHVVDJH�WKDW�JHQGHU�GRHVQµW�PDW�ter. ,W�ZDV�UHZDUGLQJ�WR�EH�DEOH�WR�WDNH�SDUW�LQ�WKDW�H[SHULHQFH��6RPH�RI�WKH�SROLWLFLDQV�PDGH�LW�FOHDU�WKDW��GHVSLWH�the struggles they faced, particularly as women under the critical lens of the media and their male counter�parts, their service has been beyond worth it. The girls connected with the women’s stories of overcoming adversity and found inspiration in their successes. And as a facilitator it was wonderful to partake in the H[SHULHQFH�DQG�VHH�WKH�JLUOV�JURZ�WKURXJKRXW�WKH�HYHQW��7KLV�VHUYLFH�OHDUQLQJ�RSSRUWXQLW\�DOORZHG�XV�DV�VWX�dents to give back to the community and help girls grow into better leaders.

Waking up every morning at the break of dawn to the sound of a FDQQRQ�¾ULQJ�LVQµW�GHVFULSWLYH�RI�D�W\SLFDO�FROOHJH�H[SHULHQFH��EXW�it’s a daily reality for student cadets at the United States Military $FDGHP\�LQ�:HVW�3RLQW��1HZ�<RUN��,�JRW�WR�H[SHULHQFH�WKLV��DORQJ�with other aspects of cadet life, at the beginning of November while ,�ZDV�D�GHOHJDWH�DW�WKH�6WXGHQW�&RQIHUHQFH�RQ�8QLWHG�6WDWHV�$IIDLUV��The conference focused on collaboration from students across the world to address international policy issues and their impact on United States National Security. Along with these intense roundtable discussion on policy issues, the student delegates stayed with cadet hosts on the West 3RLQW�FDPSXV�WR�OHDUQ�DERXW�DQG�H[SHULHQFH�FDGHW�OLIH�LQ�RUGHU�WR�IDFLOLWDWH�XQGHUVWDQGLQJ�EHWZHHQ�FLYLOLDQV�DQG�military personnel.

Honors Program Three Days of Service | Fall Break 2015CEC/Habitat for Humanity

Around 75 Honors students chose to be a part of something bigger than themselves and participat�ed in the annual Three Days of Service event, volunteering for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. ,Q�UHFRJQLWLRQ�RI�WKHLU�HIIRUWV��WKH�Omaha World-Herald wrote a feature on the service project on their October 20th Good News column! The article quoted Alyssa Wiese, an Honors freshman, “A ZHOO�URXQGHG�HGXFDWLRQ�VKRXOG�LQYROYH�VRPH�FRPPXQLW\�VHUYLFH��JLYLQJ�EDFN�³�*RRG�ZRUN�Honors Students! The semester is approaching its end, and if you’re like me, you’re just beginning to realize how much you have actually learned. Perhaps the knowledge you gathered wasn’t limited WR�ZKDW�ZDV�FRYHUHG�LQ�WKH�FODVVURRP��(DUOLHU�WKLV�\HDU��WKH�Honors Student Association hosted a Fall Social that offered students the opportunity to meet in an environment where they

were encouraged to share their opinions and knowledge on controversial issues and create a conversation with this information. 7KH�)DOO�6RFLDO�SURSRVHG�GLVFXVVLRQ�RQ�WDUJHWHG�NLOOLQJV��SK\VLFLDQ�DVVLVWHG�VXLFLGH��JHQHWLFDOO\�PRGL¾HG�RU�ganisms, and amnesty granted to children of illegal immigrants. These are pressing issues in America today, but PRVW�RI�WKH�WLPH�LWµV�H[WUHPHO\�GLI¾FXOW�WR�WDON�DERXW�WKHP�LQ�D�FRPSRVHG�PDQQHU��$V�D�SDUWLFLSDQW�LQ�WKH�6RFLDO��,�ZDVQµW�VXUH�ZKDW�WR�H[SHFW��,�GLGQµW�NQRZ�KRZ�PDQ\�SHRSOH�ZHUH�JRLQJ�WR�EH�IRU�RU�DJDLQVW�WKH�LVVXHV�DW�KDQG��

7KH�%ORRG�'ULYH�ZDV�DQ�LQFUHGLEOH�VXFFHVV��'HVSLWH�WKH�RYHUZKHOPLQJ�HIIRUW�LW�WRRN�WR�VFKHGXOH����appointments when there were only 90 possible slots, we had so many people help out on the day. 7KH�¾QDO�¾JXUHV�KDYH�EHHQ�XSGDWHG�RQ�WKH�5HG�&URVV�ZHEVLWH��2XU�JRDO�ZDV�WR�FROOHFW����GRQDWLRQV�and we managed to gather all 90 of the possible donations! As you may remember from last semes�WHU��ZH�ZHUH�DEOH�WR�GRQDWH����XQLWV���KRZ�DZHVRPH�WR�KDYH�VXUSDVVHG�WKDW�QXPEHU��*UHDW�MRE�WR�everybody involved; thank you all.

Congratulations to Professors Lyn Holley and Matthew 0DU[�DQG�WKHLU�MRLQW�+RQRUV�,QWUR�WR�*HURQWRORJ\�(QJOLVK�&RPSRVLWLRQ�FODVV�IRU�D�WHUUL¾F�HQG�WR�WKHLU�FRXUVH��7KLV�class featured a service learning component in which all members of the class partnered with elders from the Omaha community. The photo featured to the right includes the students and their elder partners at an event that completed their service learning project. Through this course, Honors students engaged with the community and gained valuable perspective from some amazing community members!
