2018 Griffin ’23 M anagement Award

The Donald Griffin ’23 Management Award provides an annual opportunity for managers and administrators to participate in professional activities that provide new insights and perspectives, renew motivation, and/or enhance skills applicable to current responsibilities. Grants are awarded annually to employees who positively affect others through their own actions, are able to learn or develop a new skill to apply on the job, and seek opportunities to foster collaboration with others. Each year, two employees—one in administrative grades 1 through 5 and one in administrative grades 6 through 10—receive this award.

Nominations for the award, which are made by managers and their vice president, dean, academic chair, or academic director, are reviewed and selected by a small committee. Recipients of the award receive a customized Lucite trophy and a grant up to $2,500. Their names are inscribed on a plaque that is displayed in the Office of Human Resources.

The Award was established through a gift from James Griffin ’55, Barbara Griffin Cole ’82, and Chris Cole ’81 to honor their father, grandfather, and grandfather-in-law Donald Worner Griffin ’23. He is remembered as a dedicated and beloved administrator and alumnus who became known as Mr. Princeton.

The artistic rendering of Nassau Hall featured on our program cover and service certificates was created by renowned Princeton architect Michael Graves.

These certificates are done with a very special halftone engraving technique. The Michael Graves drawing is etched on a copper plate, coated with metallic copper ink, and wiped clean except for the ink that gets caught in the halftone dot pattern. Fine acid-free paper is then pressed onto the plate, hard enough for the surface of the paper to descend into the recesses where the copper ink was caught. The paper picks up the ink and is set aside to dry. Each piece is made by this meticulous, hand-done process. In some cases, the metallic ink is polished to make it shine. Very few modern printers are able to produce high-quality, beautiful halftone engraving.

Graves was at the forefront of architectural design since he founded his practice in Princeton in 1964. As the Robert Schirmer Professor of Architecture, Emeritus, at Princeton University, where he taught for almost 40 years, Graves was an influential theorist as well as a diversified and prolific designer. Since the early 1980s, his work directly influenced the transformation of urban architecture, from the abstraction of commercial Modernism toward an interest in context. Hailed in The New York Times by critic Paul Goldberger as “truly the most original voice American architecture has produced in some time,” Graves was the recipient of several of the most prestigious awards ever conferred upon architects in the United States. These include the 2001 Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects, 1999 National Medal of Arts (a presidential award), $50,000 Frank Annunzio Award from the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation, and 2010 AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education.

He has become internationally recognized as a healthcare design advocate, and, in 2010, named as one of the Top 25 Most Influential People in Healthcare Design. In March 2013, President Obama appointed Graves to the US Access Board. Michael Graves passed away in 2015 in his home in Princeton.*
