Membership Maintenance TocontinueintheHonorsProgramfortheacademicyear,youmusthaveatransferableGPAof3.3orhigher.Oncespringgradesarereported,theHonorsDirectorwillcheckallactiveHonorsstudents’GPAs.Studentswhohavedroppedbelow3.3mayberemovedfromtheprogramandlosetheirabilitytoenrollinHonorscourses.Studentsmayasktobere‐admittedwhenthey’vebroughtuptheirgrades.Inspecialcircumstances,studentsmaypetitiontheHonorsProgramtosuspendremovalfromtheprogram.
Academic Integrity and Code of Conduct
AsastudentacceptedintotheHonorsTransferProgramatCabrilloCollege,youarejoiningacommunityofscholarswhoarecommittedtoexcellenceinthelearningprocess.Thehonorsprogramassumesthatallstudentswillpursuetheirstudieswithintegrityandhonesty;moreover,incidentsofacademicdishonesty,orotheractsthatdemonstratealackofintegrity,arenottolerated.Evidenceofacademicdishonestywillresultindismissalfromtheprogram.Studentsforwhomanyadministrativedisciplinaryactionoractionforconcernofthestudent’smentalhealthistakenmayalsobedismissedfromtheprogramatthediscretionoftheDirectorandLeadFaculty.AllstudentsmustsigntheHonorsTransferProgramAcademicIntegrityandCodeofConductAgreementuponentranceintotheprogram,Seetheagreementlanguageonpage11ofthishandbook.

Honors Scholar Designation
Honors Scholar Requirements TheHonorsScholarDesignationisthehighestacademicawardgrantedbyCabrilloCollege.TobecomeanHonorsScholar,astudentmustfulfillallthreeofthefollowing:1. CompletefiveHonorscoursesoracombination
ofcoursesandcontractswithagradeof“C”orbetter.
‐ Atleast9unitsmustbefrom“H”(ListA)
courses(e.g.,SOC1H‐thesemayincludecoursescompletedviaaSupplementalAgreement)
‐ Only6unitsmaybefromthe“HonorsDesignated”(ListB)courseswhichrequireaDesignatedHonorsCourseContract
‐ PetitionforGraduation,eitherforanAssociateDegreeoraCertificateofAchievementinGeneralEducation,andhaveacumulativetransferableGPAof3.4orhigher.
Pass/no Pass not allowed for Honors Scholar Designation AllofthefiveHonorscourses(orcoursesattachedtoaDesignatedHonorsCourseContract)mustbetakenforagrade.

Do I Have to Be an Honors Scholar? No.Foravarietyofreasons,manystudentschoosetotakeonlyafewHonorscourses.Forexample,ifyoujoinwithonlytwosemestersleftatCabrilloCollege,youmightnotbeabletofitfiveHonorscoursesintoyourschedule.Remember,evenoneortwoHonorsCourseslookgreatonyourtranscript,giveyouaboostinadmissionforUC’s,andyoucanstillbeaproudprogrammemberandparticipateinallouractivities.

The Honors Curriculum
Honors Courses HonorscoursesarespecialsectionsofCabrilloCollegeclasseswhicharemoreadvancedandareonlyopentoHonorsstudents.Honorscoursesarethebestwaytogethonorscreditonyourtranscriptbecausetheyofferanintensiveandpersonalexperienceinacommunityofsimilarlyhigh‐achievingstudents.WechoosesomeofCabrilloCollege’smostdedicatedprofessorstoteachcourseswhichmeetmoststudents’transferandAA/ASgeneraleducationrequirements.TohelpstudentsprogressthroughCabrilloCollege,werotatethesecoursesonaregularbasisandstudentsarerecommendedtoplantheirschedulesaroundthem.
Do They Have a Lot More Work? No.Honorsclassesdonotnecessarilyhavemoreworkthantheirregularcounterparts,rathertheyhavedifferentwork.Forexample,whilethelengthofapapermightbethesameforaregularandanHonorscourse,intheHonorscourse,thetopicswillbemoresophisticated.ItisalsooftenthecasethatHonorscoursesusemoreadvancedacademicresourcesthantheregularsections.TheBottomline–youwillworkharderinyourHonorscourses,butyouwilloftenfindthemyourfavoriteclassesbecauseofthefascinatingmaterialandthestimulationyou’llgetfromyourfellowHonorsstudents.Plus,theHonorscoursesaregreatpreparationfortheadvancedworkyou’llencounterwhenyoutransfer!
How Will Honors Courses Be Graded? Honorscoursesarenotgradedonacurvesoyouwillnotbeforcedtocompeteforalimitednumberof“A”and“B”grades.YourHonorsProfessorsknowthatyouarebeinggradedonchallengingmaterialwhichrequiresmoreoriginalandin‐depththinkingandresearch.ThisadditionaleffortrequiredinanHonorscoursewillbereflectedinyourgrades,butasinanyclass,studentswhofailtomeetcoursestandardswillbeassignedlowmarks.Remember,yourprofessorswanttohelpyou,soifyoubegintofeeloverwhelmed,meetwiththemduringtheirofficehours!
Honors Course Characteristics NosinglemodelofanHonorscoursecanbesuperimposedonalldisciplines.Thereisrichvariationamongdifferentdepartmentsandprofessorsintheir
modesofinquiry,pedagogicalapproachesandtypesofassignments.However,certaincharacteristicsareoftenpresentinthemosteffectiveHonorscourses:
Honors courses emphasize advanced topics and deeper understanding
◊ Moresophisticatedreadingassignments:primarysourcesinsteadofexcerpts,anthologiesandsummativetextbooks,novelsinsteadofshortstories,etc.
◊ Exposuretomoreadvancedmaterialandcuttingedgeideas,researchandtrends
◊ Emphasisonchallengingwritingassignmentsthatrequiregenerativeratherthanresponsiveworkandhigherlevelsofsynthesis
◊ Assignmentswhichinvolvesubstantialresearchandwhichemphasizedproblemsolving
Honors courses emphasize creative & collaborative teaching & learning

The Honors Colloquium TheHonorsColloquium(HONRS1Hand2H)are0.5units,CSUtransferable,short‐termcourseswithvariabletopics.Atpresent,thecoursesarefocusedontheHonorsResearchSymposium–preparationandpresentation.IntheSpringsemester,thesecoursesalsoprovideNew/Incoming(Springsemester)HonorsStudentswithanOrientationtothebenefitsoftheHTP.NOTE:HONRS1Hand2H0.5unitsdonotcounttowardthe15unitsrequiredforHonorsScholarDesignationorUCLATAPCertification.
Designated Honors Courses DesignatedHonorsCoursesareclasseswhichareintensivebynature,butdonothavean“H”Honorsversion(ListBCourses).StudentmustcompleteaDesignatedHonorsCourseContractinordertobeabletousethesecoursestowardthe15‐unitrequirementforHonorsScholarandUCLATAPCertification.Studentsmayuse6units,maximum,fromthesecoursestowardtheirHonorsScholarand/orUCLATAPCertificationand“Completion”oftheprogramforHTCCcollegesanduniversitiesBeginningSpring,2019,thesecoursesarenotatedonthetranscriptwiththeCodeof“15”“HonorsCreditAwarded”.TheDesignatedHonorsCoursesare:

StudentsmayrequesttowriteaDesignatedHonorsCourseContractwiththeirinstructor.Seethenextsection,onpage7,formoreinformation.
Supplemental Agreements SupplementalAgreementsmayberequestedforregular,non‐Honorssectionsofclassesthataresometimestaughtas“H”versions(ListAcourses).ThisprovidesprogrammemberswhocannotfitHonorscoursesintotheirscheduletheopportunityforacademicworkintheHonorsProgram.SupplementalAgreementsrequirethatyouworkone‐on‐onewithyourprofessorsonaprojectthatcomplementsandintensifiestheregularworkinthecourse.ThisisagreatopportunitytopursueyourowninterestsandreceiveHonorstranscriptcreditatthesametime.However,youshouldbeawareSupplementalAgreementsrequireself‐motivation,organizationanddiscipline,sobeprepared.Seethenextsection,onpage7,formoreinformation.

Supplemental Agreement vs. Designated Honors Course Contract Eligibility
What Courses Are Eligible and How do I Create an Agreement or Contract? AnycoursewhichhasanHonorsversion(H),butforwhichyouareregisteringinanon‐honorssection,requiresaSupplementalAgreementifyouwanttoreceivehonorscredit(ListAcourses).Coursesthatare"HonorsDesignated"willrequireaDesignatedHonorsCourseContract.ThesearereferredtoasListBcourses,andareasfollows:BIO9A,BIO9B,CHEM1B,CHEM12A/AL,CHEM12B/BL,ECON1A,1B,ENGL34,40,46A,ENGL46B,HIST2A,HIST2B,HIST19B,MATH6,MATH7,PHYS4B,PHYS4C,PSYCH4,SPAN25,andSPAN26.Note:only6unitsfromthese"HonorsDesignated"coursesmaybeusedtowardsthe15unitsofHonorscoursesforcompletionoftheprogram(HonorsScholardesignationand/UCLATAPCertification).Note:LIBR10H,CG51HandHONRS1H,2Hmaynotbecountedtowardthe15unitrequirementforHonorsScholar,etc.Toobtainhonorscreditforanon‐HonorssectionofanHonorscourse(forexample,aregularEnglish2section),thestudentshouldconferwiththeirHonorsCounselor,theleadHonorsFaculty,andtheprofessorforthatcourse.ApprovalfortheSupplementAgreementwillbegrantedifallofthefollowingconditionsaremet:
1. NocurrentofferedHonorscoursesfitthestudent’sscheduleand/oreducationalplan;
2. Thestudenthasanintenseinterestindoingoriginalworkinasubjectmatterrelatedtoher/hismajororareaofpersonalinterest;and
3. Theprofessoragreestoworkwiththestudentontheproject.

ToobtainacontractforanHonorsDesignatedCourse,forexampleEnglish46AorPhysics4B,studentsshouldcontacttheirprofessorseitherbeforeoronthefirstdayoftheclass.IdentifyyourselfasanHonorsstudentandrequesttocompleteaDesignatedHonorsCourseContractforthecourse.YoushouldalsosendanemailtotheLeadHonorsFaculty.Ifyourprofessorhasanyconcernsorquestionsaboutthisprocess,havehimorhercontacttheLeadHonorsFaculty.YoushouldalsomakesuretoletyourHonorscounselorthatyouaredoingacontract.
Supplemental Agreement or Designated Honors Course Contract Guidelines
1. Theprojectshouldtakeabout25hoursforthe
studenttocomplete.2. Important!TheHonorsstudentshouldhave
regularcontactwiththeprofessorforguidance.Yourprofessoristhecontentexpertforthisprocess,whileyouaretheonegeneratingtheideas.Besuretoseekoutthementorshipofyourprofessorthroughouttheproject.
3. Thereshouldbeclearoutcomesfortheproject.Possibleprojectsinclude: Anacademicresearchpaper ACreativeproject,suchasamusical
performanceorartwork Classpresentation Service/community‐basedlearningproject Discipline‐relatedinternships
Contract Process OnceyourrequesttocompleteeitheraSupplementalAgreementorDesignatedHonorsCourseContracthasbeenapproved,youwillneedtoprintoutthecorrectformforyouandyourprofessortosign.Thismustbecompletelyfilledoutandclearlyspecifywhatextraworkyouwillbecompletinginordertobringthecoursetohonorslevel.AgreementandContractformsmaybefoundat:http://www.cabrillo.edu/services/honors/contracts.html

Thefullyfilled‐outandsignedAgreementorContractshouldbeturnedinbyyoutotheOfficeofInstruction,SACWestRoom213,bytheendofthefourthweekofthesemester.
Completing the Agreement or Contract
OncetheSupplementalAgreementorDesignatedHonorsCourseContracthasbeenapproved,thestudentproceedstocompletetheworkandthecourse.Attheendofthesemester,theprojectisturnedintotheprofessorwhodetermineswhetheritmeetstheguidelinesagreedupon.Ifitisdeemedsatisfactory,theprofessorwillsubmittheCompletionFormtotheHonorsProgramstaffwhowillensurepropercreditisgivenfortheSupplementalAgreementorDesignatedHonorsCourseContract.
How Will Supplemental Agreements and Designated Honors Course Contracts Be Graded? TheSupplementalAgreementandtheDesignatedHonorsCourseContractareassessedona“satisfactoryorunsatisfactory”basisandwillinnowayaffectthestudent’sgradeinthecourse.SuccessfulcompletionoftheSupplementalAgreementandtheDesignatedHonorsCourseContractwillresultinthestudent’sreceivingHonorscreditforthecourseonher/histranscriptfor“H”sectionsofcourses,and/orcredittowardtheHonorsScholarDesignation15‐unitrequirement.Note:youmustreceivea“C”orbetterinthecoursetoreceivethisHonorscredit.
Can I “Back Out” of My Supplemental Agreement or Designated Honors Course Contract?
HonorsstudentsmayterminatetheSupplementalAgreementorDesignatedHonorsCourseContractobligationatanytimeduringthesemester.Thisterminationwillnotaffectthestudent’sgradeinthecourse.However,she/hewillnotreceiveHonorscreditfortheclass.FailuretocompleteeitheraSupplementalAgreementorDesignatedHonorsCourseContractwillbetakenintoaccountthenexttimethestudentrequestsacontract.Thestudentshouldnotifytheinstructorthattheywillnotbecompletingtheproject.TheinstructorwillnotifytheHonorsProgramstaff.
Can I Get an “Incomplete” In My Agreement or Contract If I Don’t Finish in Time? TheSupplementalAgreementorDesignatedHonorsCourseContractmustbecompletedbytheendofthesemester.Thereareno“Incomplete”gradesallowedforSupplementalAgreementsorDesignatedHonorsCourseContracts.However,inthecasethatthestudentreceivesan“Incomplete”intheoverallcourseinaccordancewithcollegeguidelines,thestudentshallbepermittedtimetocompletetheSupplementalAgreementorDesignatedHonorsCourseContractalongwiththecourse.ThemaximumamountoftimeallowedforcompletionoftheworktocleartheIncompleteisoneyear.
What about on‐line courses and Supplemental Agreements?Ingeneral,on‐linecoursesdonotmeetthespiritofhonorscoursesinourprogram.Hybridon‐linecoursesmaybeconsidered,onacase‐by‐casebasis,andatthediscretionoftheHonorsDirectorandLeadHonorsFaculty.

Thisstatewideconferenceforcommunitycollegehonorsstudentsisthepremieracademiceventoftheyear.HeldeveryspringateitherStanfordorUCBerkeley,theHonorsResearchSymposiumgivesyouanopportunitytopresentyourworkinanacademicsettingtofellowscholars.Moststudentswhoparticipatecallthisthemostimportantandlife‐changingacademiceventoftheirtimeatCabrilloCollege.AnyresearchprojectyoucompleteinanHonorscoursemaybesubmittedforpresentationattheSymposium.Theselectionprocessisverycompetitive.And,ifyou’reselected,ateamofprofessorswillworkwithyoutoprepareandpracticeyourpresentation.TheproposalsubmissiondeadlineisinearlyFebruary.ContactLetitiaScott‐Curtiswithquestionsandsubmissions.

How does the TAP Certification Work? WhenyouapplytoUCLAthefallbeforeyoutransfer,besuretostrategicallychooseaback‐upmajorthatisNOTaselectivemajorintheCollegeofLettersandSciences.By
earlyFebruary,theDirectorwillcontactallUCLAapplicantHonorsstudentswhoareontracktocompletetheirHonorsScholarrequirementsbytheendofthespringsemestertostartthepaperworkprocess.ThedeadlineforthispaperworkisgenerallyearlyMarch.

AsastudentatCabrilloCollege,IunderstandthatIamjoiningacommunityofscholarswhoarecommittedtoexcellenceinthelearningprocess.Thehonorsprogramassumesthatallstudentswillpursuetheirstudieswithintegrityandhonesty;moreover,incidentsofacademicdishonesty,orotheractsthatdemonstratealackofintegrity,arenottolerated.Evidenceofacademicdishonestywillresultindismissalfromtheprogram.StudentsinvolvedinanyadministrativedisciplinaryactionmayalsobedismissedfromtheprogramatthediscretionoftheDirectorandLeadFaculty.
