Hoodie Hoo!

Thorntown library staff and visitors celebrated another Hoodie Hoo Day on February

20 at noon sharp, waving their

arms, and shouting, “Hoodie

Hoo! Hoodie Hoo!” to banish winter

and say goodbye to cold weather.

Hoodie Hoo participants claim that

it works every year, though some

efforts are more successful than oth-

ers. Afterwards the group returns

inside to warm up and enjoy a sweet

treat and pink lemonade.

Harry Potter Program: Triwizard Tournament

Witches and Wizards of all ages are invited to attend our Harry Potter program: The

Triwizard Tournament! On Saturday, March 7th, drop in anytime between 4:00 and

6:00 p.m. to participate in many fun activities. There are lots of door prizes to be won!

Eat a sweet treat to find out which Hogwarts's house you belong in:

Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, or Hufflepuff. After you have

been sorted have fun with many activities scattered around the li-

brary. Play games, eat snacks, and solve puzzles as you explore the

wonderful world of Harry Potter! Recommended attire is Wizarding

robes or Plainclothes. (We don’t want the muggles to get suspicious!)

Please RSVP by owl or in person to the library so we may estimate

attendance.

Taste of Home

The March 2 Taste of Home sampler has been cancelled. The next Taste of Home will be on May

4 from 6 - 7. Anyone who loves a good pitch-in and trying new recipes will enjoy Taste of Home!

Cooks choose a recipe (old or new) to prepare, turn in a copy of the recipe to the library, then

bring the prepared dish, a place setting, and an appetite to the May 4th meal. Guests will leave

with many new recipes. Call the library with any questions or to sign up!

“Alphabet Soup” Earns Victory in Spelling Bee

Thorntown Public Library hosted its Inaugural Adult

Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 15 in library meeting

rooms. Five teams competed for bragging rights, glory,

and trophies in the team- and points-based competi-

tion. Thorntown Police Officer Derek Babcock served as

the word caller, and library trustees Amber Brown and

Chuck Behrens judged the spelling teams. Each team

was provided with four opportunities to cheat during the

early rounds – they could use a dictionary, consult a

smartphone, copy off another team’s dry-erase board, or

ask the Expert Panel, made up of three Thorntown Ele-

mentary Spell Bowl teammates. Additionally, teams were

encouraged to dress up, decorate their tables, and other-

wise encourage the audience to vote for them in the quest

to earn Style Points, which could be used to advance past

one of the elimination rounds.

The competition consisted of six rounds of nine words each; words were assigned a point value

based on difficulty. Many competitors were distressed when they learned that “annihilate” (the

first word of the competition) was worth only one point. During the first round, audience mem-

bers completed their Style Point ballots. The Sugar Plain Wordsmiths beat out the library’s own

Wurd Nurds to win the coveted five points, employing a mix of a custom banner, fancy table dec-

orations, and bribes (candy) to win the audience’s approval. The Wordsmiths later used these

points to avoid elimination, sending the Honey Bees to the audience to watch the remaining four

rounds. The competition continued with laughter, heckling, and lots of interaction.

Alphabet Soup and The Spell Checkers advanced into the final rounds, having tied during

rounds three and four. The Bee took a serious tone as the word difficulty in-

creased. “Sarsaparilla” shook the confidence of both teams, and “onomatopoeia” ended the com-

petition. Alphabet Soup teammates Lisa Dorsey, Lauren Peters, and Joe Peters won the day

with their superior spelling skills. Library director and spelling list creator Christine Sterle has

been asked to reconsider her criteria for one-point spelling words.

The Second Annual TPL Adult Spelling Bee has been scheduled for March 6, 2021.

Indiana Bees & Their Keepers

Mike Schluttenhofer will talk about beekeeping in Indiana at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday,

March 10 in the meeting rooms 116/120. The program is free and open to the public.

Refreshments will include recipes that include honey. The program idea was sparked

when the book discussion group decided to read in February/March Queen Bee by Dor-

othea Benton Frank. The book features a female beekeeper in South Carolina and in-

cludes a bit of whodunit. Mike will include information about pollinator gardens and

what sustains bees and butterflies. Our Thorntown Heritage Museum will be planting

a pollinator garden this spring, so join us to get a head start on spring and summer.
