Hello Mentonians,
What a fantastic day everyone had at Five Star Equestrian Centre. While it’s always good to be together as a club, sometimes
the winter weather means we have to have an offsite rally.
One comment that was brought to my attention is that you all need to clean your horse or ponies’ bit! Your own tongue is
very sensitive and any lump or bump in your mouth feels much larger when probed by your tongue than it actually is. Your
horse’s tongue is the same, so imagine what it would feel like to have a dirty bit with caked on grass rubbing across the
surface. This can cause your horse to have a very sore mouth, especially if you are only riding once or twice a week. Next time
you ride take a good look at your bit and bridle. If your bit is not clean at rally, you will be asked to dismount and clean it.
Congratulations to Ella Smith and her mount Adda, who represented our Club at the Ride To Time State finals held at Moonee
Valley Racecourse and they won! This is an instructional project which aims to teach Pony Club riders the skills involved with
riding to a given pace. PCAV Zones conduct clinics and qualifying days and from these the best performing riders are invited to
the final, sponsored by Racing Victoria. If any of you would like more information regarding this, please contact me.
At the September rally we will have Mark Burnell attending after lunch to talk about bits, their uses and the importance of
fitting them correctly for the horse’s mouth. He will also explain the anatomy of a horse’s mouth, different issues that may
arise and how horses chew. Mark will also be available to do your horse’s teeth at a cost of around $80/$100 depending on
how many people book in. Please let me know prior to rally if you would like your horse’s teeth done. The reason I need to
know in advance how many of you will be attending rally is because I book the instructors in advance and the club has to pay
for this instruction, whether there’s 1 or 8 riders in a group. Your assistance with this is much appreciated.
Organisation is underway for our horse trials on 23rd October 2016. For our newer members and younger riders please
consider having a go at this event. It is always a good place to start at Horse Trials as the horses are in familiar surroundings
and you will have the support of all our riders. Anyone competing Grade 5 or above are now required to complete the PCAV D
certificate. Please contact me if you would like to have a go and need to be graded.
Remember all families need to be available for the Working Bee(s) leading up to the event and on the day as there is so much
to organise. Every family and rider will be delegated a small job to do and this then makes the day well organised and shares
the work load around. Thank you to all of the people who are working very hard to get our cross country course up and
running for this event. All your hard work, time and effort is so much appreciated by all of us at the Club. Without you this
would not be possible to run an event like this.
Just a reminder, if you have any ideas for holiday programs, clinics, trail rides, camps, etc., that you would like to do – please
let me know. Our club is for the riders and we welcome your ideas and input.
For all of you out competing – GOOD LUCK!
KEEP CALM AND STAY ON!
Sarah Robinson, Mentone District Commissioner.
