New Board Member Victoria L. Brown, Ph.D.

With 25 years of progressive research and managerial experience, Dr.

Victoria Brown is a valued addition to the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation Board of Trustees.

Dr. Brown joined CHRISTUS Health this past September as the System Director, Clinical Research Administration, after several years as a program director and research manager for the Tobacco Research and Treatment Program at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She has been conducting research, including animal studies, community-based studies, and clinical trials, since receiving her doctorate in pharmacology in 1997.

Prior to joining the board, Dr. Brown visited the CHRISTUS Stehlin labs, where she was impressed by the “focused and serious” work done by the researchers – as a team, “with no heroes.” As a “back to basics” person herself, she appreciated the elegant solutions pioneered by the Stehlin group, including using something as simple as heat to

optimize anticancer treatment several decades ago.

Most importantly, Victoria Brown felt an emotional response to the nude mice she witnessed at the laboratory, realizing that they represented the type

of tumors growing often unbeknownst to people with cancer. “I reached another level of understanding about how critical compounds like CZ48 can be,” she said.

Dr. Brown officially joins the board this spring. Welcome!

Dr. Beppino Giovanella, Dr. Victoria Brown and Bobby Anderson at the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation.

By age 50, one of every two men worldwide will show microscopic evidence of prostate cancer. The

disease has become the most common cancer diagnosed in American men, representing fully one-third of all newly-diagnosed malignancies.

But before new therapeutic strategies can be developed, scientists must understand each cancer’s biology, the mechanism involved in its progression, and its diversity.

Until now, prostate cancer research has been hampered by a shortage of tumor models. The National Cancer Institute’s Prostate Cancer Progress Review Group urged the development of new cell lines, saying, “New models will provide methods of testing both chemopreventative and chemotherapeutic agents. Moreover, novel therapeutic protocols, such as

gene therapy and immunotherapy, can be tested.”

Paving the Way for More Research and Treatment

In a three-year, $1.5 million project, CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation researchers are teaming with physicians at Baylor College of Medicine to create the first comprehensive repository of human prostate cancer tumor cell lines and xenografts.

The cell lines and grafts will represent all prostate cancer subtypes and prognoses: from primaries to metastases, indolent to aggressive.

The lines are being developed by Stehlin scientists from tumor tissue samples harvested by Baylor physicians during prostatectomies or metastatic

Grant Enables Critical Prostate Cancer Study

The CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation was recently awarded a major grant from the

Vivian L. Smith Foundation in support of prostate cancer research.

Smith Foundation trustees voted to approve the three-year grant in November following a site visit to the CHRISTUS Stehlin laboratory. The Vivian L. Smith Foundation has been a generous supporter of the Stehlin Foundation for many years.

The grant has been earmarked for the collaborative project with Baylor College of Medicine to develop a broad line of prostate cancer cell lines and xenografts to be made available to researchers the world over.

CHRISTUS Stehlin as Library Builder

The prostate cell model project is not the first of its kind for the Foundation. Thirty-five years ago, Stehlin researchers established the first significant number of breast cancer tumor cell lines, which led to an explosion in breast cancer therapeutics. Stehlin’s breast cancer work also resulted in a collaboration with Dr. Dennis Slamon – and the development of Herceptin®, an effective anticancer drug against certain aggressive breast cancers. Today more than half of all breast cancer tumor cells used around the world originated in the Stehlin lab.

In addition to prostate cancer studies, CHRISTUS Stehlin researchers are compiling a library of cell lines and xenografts for DSRCT, a highly aggressive sarcoma cancer that strikes children and young adults. The cell model project should spark new research into this rare and deadly disease.

CZ48, a promising new anticancer drug developed at the

CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation, is currently undergoing Phase I human clinical trials at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and the University of New Mexico Cancer Center.

Patients who qualify for the study are all suffering from advanced cancers and have failed conventional treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

The purpose of Phase I is to determine the safety of the drug by administering initially small dosages with gradual escalations. The results to date are promising: after 3, 6, 7, and 8 months of treatment respectively, four of these critically ill patients have demonstrated stable disease (little or no progression). Side effects have been mild and manageable.

Drug Delivery Improvements

While progress is being made on the clinical trials, Stehlin

scientists back at the lab continue to develop new formulations and discover ways to deliver CZ48 more effectively. As an example, Stehlin researchers are working with labs around the world to decrease the size of the drug particles, enabling them to be delivered to and absorbed by the cancer cells more rapidly.

lesion biopsies. As more tumor xenografts and cell lines are established, researchers can better describe the defining characteristics of the disease, both as a whole and within each subclass of tumors.

The project team is making the materials available to the worldwide scientific community, which will spark new research into the causes and treatment of the disease.

The project is multi-disciplinary, requiring data from and providing it to all parts of the prostate cancer landscape. Its goal is to translate findings quickly and efficiently “from research bench to bedside,” or from laboratory experiments through clinical trials to actual point-of-care patient applications.

According to Stehlin laboratory director, Dr. Beppino Giovanella, “It is very exciting to be on the leading edge of this neglected field of study,

which affects 1 in 6 American males. We expect our work to generate a boost in research, and, eventually more effective treatments.”

CHRISTUS Health Moves Offices to Dallas No Change for CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation

In January 2012, CHRISTUS Health, the corporate sponsor of

the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation, announced that they would consolidate their Houston and San Antonio offices at a new corporate headquarters in Irving, Texas.

As a result 700-800 Houston corporate employees will move to the Dallas area. However, the company will keep its Houston hospitals and ministry employees.

The decision will have no effect on the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation. “We expect to maintain the same close ties we have always had with CHRISTUS Health,” summarized Bobby Anderson, president of the Foundation.

In 2006, the Stehlin Foundation became part of CHRISTUS Health, an international faith-based nonprofit healthcare system comprised of more than 50 hospitals and long-term care facilities, 175 clinics and outpatient centers, and dozens of other health ministries. The CHRISTUS system is affiliated with the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, a Catholic congregation of women that has supported the Foundation since 1970.

S tehlin laboratory technician Lauren Battershell is a veteran marathon runner, as is her father Darryl Moore,

who lives in Fort Worth, Texas. In fact, with a lifetime goal of completing a marathon in every state by his 60th birthday, Darryl Moore has 23 marathons to his credit, including four of his local Cowtown Marathons.

His running career was in doubt when Darryl Moore was diagnosed last May with gastric adenocarcinoma, or stomach cancer. Obviously, the family was heartbroken over the diagnosis.

It was over the Christmas holidays, after two rounds of chemotherapy, that Darryl expressed his disappointment that he couldn’t compete in his #5 Cowtown Marathon and earn his fifth finisher’s medal “point,” to complete the race’s unique star display plaque.

Lauren initially wondered if she had the strength, but she proposed her idea anyway: “I asked my dad how he felt about me pushing him the 26.2 miles in a wheelchair so he could get his star.”

While the two never trained together, Lauren worked out with extra weights over

the next months to build strength for the 11 lb. wheelchair and her 155 lb. dad. Her parents bought a streamlined wheelchair that would make going uphill a bit easier – although Lauren says going downhill poses its own kind of challenges.

A Hilly Course

With hope and smiles, on February 26, Lauren and Darryl started the hilly course in Fort Worth – and completed it in 5 hours and 59 minutes. Surprisingly, Darryl felt well enough to run the last two-tenths of a mile, and across the finish line, on his own!

The best win of all? As of February 17, Darryl Moore has been declared in remission from his bout with cancer.

In the week after the race, Lauren was sore, sore, sore. Her dad announced that his 24th marathon was by far “his easiest!”

It is stories like this that bring the work of the CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation for Cancer Research down to a personal level. Congratulations, Lauren and Darryl – way to go the distance!
