Principal’s Report
Cluster Sports Day
Our primary students had a great day at the cluster sports last week. There were some amazing per-formances and it was great to hear about the willingness and endeavour of the students when partici-pating in the events. Congratulations to Declan and Cody on winning the age champions.
Some of our students will be progressing on to the Little Desert Athletics in Horsham next week. We wish them all the best.
Hands on Learning Team
Our Hands on Learning team has been working hard assisting the Show Committee. They have been going over to the show grounds each Wednesday morning to paint, repair and generally help to get things ready for the big day. A new HoL member, Geoffrey, has joined the team and has settled in quickly.
Student Interim Reports
The term 3 interim reports are due to be released for all students next Thursday. These reports indi-cate the effort your child has put in to their learning as well as their overall achievement in each sub-ject. The interim report also shows your child’s approach to our school values. I urge you to check through the report and, if you have any concerns, contact the school as soon as possible to arrange a meeting with the teacher, Year Level Coordinator or myself.
Staff Professional Learning
Staff held a highly productive curriculum day earlier this week. We covered a wide range of topics. We looked at the progress we have made as a school on implementing our improvement strategies and the impact those strategies are having on student learning. We then commenced planning for our 2018 improvement strategies which are aimed at improving learning across the school. Another activity was to look at the recently completed student survey data which indicates that we have high expectations, our transition programs are going well and we use teaching time effectively. We had a presentation from Mr Baulch, Mrs Wright and Mr Price on a program called Respectful Relationships, and closed the day with some administrative matters.
The curriculum day was followed-up with a professional learning session on Tuesday focussing on building our understanding of students’ special abilities. The session was facilitated by Mr Matt Cop-ping, Principal of the Horsham Special School. He reminded us of the uniqueness of every student and provided strategies for addressing the social, emotional and sensory needs of students. Graeme Holmes Principal

Year 11 Melbourne Camp
At 7.30 on Monday morning a group of bright and bubbly teenagers hopped onto the VLine bus on our way to Melbourne, due to arrive at 1.30pm. Upon our arrival we dropped our bags at YHA accommodation and headed towards the CBD for orientation. Many of us hadn’t been to Melbourne before so this was quite daunting for some. After exploring (and getting geographically misplaced) we headed to the Channel 10 studios to watch ‘The Project’ in the live audience. We then travelled back to Melbourne Central
to eat at the ‘Wood n’ Chimney’.
After an earlier than anticipated start on Tuesday, we headed to the ‘Queen Victoria Mar-kets’ which were just around the corner. While the boys enjoyed shopping the girls man-aged to get lost right in the middle. After being saved by the boys we all made our way to
Melbourne University where we were given useful hints for after school and then explored the cam-pus on a guided tour. After our tour we looked around some accommodation options the uni provid-ed. After we found lunch we journeyed to ‘Bounce’ in Essendon. We all had a bit of fun with dodge ball, wall climbing and a foam pit, until the competition picked up and Jack managed to wreck his an-kle once again. We ate dinner in ‘Crown Casino’ and then went to ‘Galactic Circus’ where some of us played in the arcade. Many of us faced our fears of heights later on, on the ‘Eureka Skydeck’, going out on the ‘Edge’.
Waking up was harder on Wednesday, we headed out to the ‘Melbourne Sealife Aquarium’
where we had to complete chemistry worksheets, including water testing, on a behind the scenes VCE tour. At the end of our tour we ate lunch in Bourke Street and then we travelled up to RMIT University. We had a brief information session and then concluded it with an amazing race around the university, with Jacob and Dylan taking out the top position. We were then given a few hours to explore Melbourne, with the boys going to
Melbourne Central and playing laser tag while the girls went shopping in Bourke Street Mall. We met up and walked in the rain to the Greek Restaurant, Stalactites, for dinner where we all tried souvla-kis. Afterwards there was more walking to watch the Broadway production of Aladdin!
After another hard wakeup and drowsy breakfast on Thursday, we made our way out to Homesglen TAFE, where we got a site tour and got to see some of the trades in action. After another train ride out to Elsternwick, we split up for lunch, then went to the Jewish Holocaust Centre. We all learned heaps from our guided tour and from listening to survivor, Gary’s story. At the end of the tour we walked a few blocks over and saw ‘The Block’ site from this year’s series. Then we split up once again where the boys went back to Galactic Circus and the girls went shopping in Bourke street Mall once again. When we met again, we travelled out to St Kilda for our Vegan Night at Trippy Taco’s! Later that night Bailey had organised for us to go watch a movie. The choice was ‘Anabelle Creation’, after a long wait outside the theatre we all got in late. It was quite a scary movie.
Friday was the hardest morning we had in terms of waking up. We packed our bags, locked them up and made our way to ice-skating! Only a few of us did it due to various inju-ries among the group. We all had a bit of fun and there were many bruised knees by the end of it. At the end of this we all walked around the corner to the Melbourne Star, it was an en-
joyable ride and the views were amazing! We had an Etihad Stadium Tour and then made our way to Southern Cross Station for our long journey home.
Siblings
Siblings,
They annoy you,
Make you angry,
But, you still love them,
Not because they are your family,
But because you choose to.
They can be your best friends,
And at times your worst enemies
But, beneath it all, there is family love.
Michayla
If I Had a Super Power
If I ever had a super power I would be 100 times faster.
I would help the people in towers and fires,
And defeat the villains and nasty liars.
I would defeat my opponents and win lame races,
And then I would admire the shock on everyone’s faces.
I would be so fast, even faster than a jet.
No matter how fast I go would I never break a sweat.
I would run so fast everything else would seem so slow.
But my power is a secret, no one can ever know.
I would help other superheroes to save humankind.
You don’t have to thank me but, if you did, I wouldn’t mind.
I would wear my mask to cover my identity,
Hopefully I will be remembered for all eternity
But, that’s only if I was 100 times faster.
Don’t always rely on me because I’m not some sort of master.
Even if it was for one single day,
If you need any help all you need to do is just say.
I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but I would only do good deeds.
So, that’s what I would do if I had super speed. Neha
That Was Then; This Is Now
For more than a century Woomelang has stood
Where the farming is hard but the people are good
The weather is hot so we go to the pool
We can meet with our friends and swim to get cool
We go to the pool to swim some more laps
To stay after closing time we sneak out through the gaps
Options are varied about our painted snake
But it makes people stop for coffee and cake
The snake on the wall is colourful and bright
As you go past it feels like you’re getting a bite
The Cronomby Tanks are on the edge of town
Where we now have a track to walk around
At the tanks you can camp and from the banks you can fish
You can watch the sunset while you cook up your dish
My Nana recorded the town history in a book
The words and the pictures tell the story if you look
Of farmers and settlers and kids at the school
Of the sowing and harvest and shearing the wool
The wind in the Mallee is hot and strong
And when the rain comes it does not last long Bronte
Just the other day I was watching TV, when I saw an ad come up on the screen the add said about the newest toothpaste that was out and on shelves ready to be used. However, I decided that it could just be another brand of toothpaste until my friend told me that he had used it. He said it was the supreme toothpaste so I went and bought a tube of the new tooth-paste and so I tried it. To my amazement, when I used it, my teeth came out white and they glowed! Bailey
This Leunig image is like a sympathy card. Whenever I see a dove, it is symbol of losing a loved one or of a birth. The dove is carrying a branch of leaves in its beak, which shows a new life or a
new start. Katherine
Although this image is quite simple, it is a peaceful drawing. I feel like it shows hope and a new beginning by having the twig and the flying bird - as if it’s moving to a new place to start again or to have another go. This
image could also be as if the bird has a family and is building a nest for the chicks. This shows how a mother cares for her family and what she does for them to give them the best chance at life. Mali
This image looks like a symbol of peace at the end of a war when people live in peace. It is say-
ing that we are in harmony then a storm happens, like war, but after it finishes we return peace-fully back to our lives. The blue background makes the dove and leaves stand out making them the main focus. Montana
Changes to College Captain handover 2017-2018
In consultation with School Council and the Leadership Team, it has been decided that the transition between School Captains each year will be modified from 2017 onwards. In previous years, the suc-cessful applicants went through the election process during Term 4, and were announced at the Awards evening in the last week of the school year. As many of you are aware, Year 12 students fin-ish in the first month of Term 4, therefore our College Captains are not present for much of the last term. It has therefore been decided that the selection process for the new College Captains will be beginning in the next few weeks, and once this process has occurred, successful applicants will then take over the reigns once the current Year 12 students finish official classes. The 2018 College Cap-tains will be announced at the last assembly for our current Year 12 cohort. Over the past couple of weeks, students and staff from the College have had the opportunity to nominate our current Year 11 students for the 2018 School Captain. Congratulations to the following students who have been nominated for this role:
Jack Bellinger
Chloe McGee
Jacob Holm
Ashley Chamberlain
Isabella Grace
Connor Mclean
Stay tuned for next week’s addition of the Newsletter, which will contain a written speech from each candidate outlining the skills, and qualities they think they could bring to the position.
