Horace Hockley Awa rd 20'i,2John Haynes OBE wins this year's annual ISTC award. An award for his considerablecontribution to the technical communications industry over many years.

John H Haynes OBE, (of the eponymousmanuals), has been selected by theISTC Council as the 2012 winner of theHorace Hockley Award.

The Horace Hockley Awardrecognises an outstanding contributionas technical communicator over manyyears, particularly in terms of raisingstandards, professional education,or spreading the value of technicalcommunication to a wider audience. Inboth the first and third of these criteriaJohn Haynes has excelled.

Over a fifty-year period, hundredsof millions of people will have read

a Halnes Manual. The innovationsintroduced by John when he started thecompany, and that he has continued tointroduce and influence over the years,

have become benchmark approachesf or succe ssfully communicatingcomplex products to a wide publicaudience. Johl's son, 'J', who is nowChairman of the Haynes PublishingGroup, presented the story of HalmesManuals as the closing ke)Trotepresentation of the TCUK conferencein 2010. Although John was not able to travelto Newcastle to receive hls award, hekindly sent a video of his acceptancespeech, a transcript of which is:

"I am delighted to have the honourof being selected to win this year's ISTCHorace Hockley Award.

I have always aimed to keeptechnical writing as simple, clear andstraightforward as possible and whathas helped enormously in this is the use

of step-by-step photographs, a means ofc ommunic ation in thems elv e s.

I4/hen, for example, explaining howlo re-assemble a molor car engine,numb ering and alphab etically lettering

component parts, nuts, bolts, etc., helpsconsiderably lo keep the accompanyingtext short, clear and to the point andmuch briefer than if instructionswithout photographs had to be made.This is probably why to date we havesold weII over 150 million car andmotorcycle manuals aII over the world.
