Performance NotesAs a Doe, true to the spirit of Psalm 42, is the voice of the exiled psalmist longing for Mount Zion, the voiceof an exiled people longing for the face of God.

The musical setting is uncomplicated—verses for cantor only, refrain for SATB choir, including anoptional descant during the final refrain. The piano introduction is also optional and is probably best suitedfor times when this piece is not used as the Responsorial Psalm during the Liturgy of the Word. The temposhould not be rushed. You may feel additional ritards at the end of the introduction and of each verse, preparing the return to the refrain, as well as the end of the final refrain.
