Venice, 1483.Splendid copy, in its original Venetian binding, of the great medieval Encyclopedia, whose illustrations include the first map ever printed when first published (Strasburg 1472). This was the first edition printed in Italy, one of eight published in the 15th century, all rare today. Agaña (Mariana Islands), 25 April 1684.Solorzano, a Jesuit missionary in the Mariana Islands, gives news of the work accomplished, and discusses plans to explore and evangelise the southern continent. London, 1778.One of the scarcest Cook publications; the ink correction on p.48 has been noted in all copies seen to date – it removes the words “and his son” from an accusation that Forster lied about the existence of calabashes on Easter Island. Octavo, original dark roan lettered in gilt. New York, 1858.Fine presentation copy of an exceptionally rare shipwreck account. Many passengers were Mormons sailing from Sydney for San Francisco on one of the hundreds of vessels carrying Mormon converts to America between 1840 and 1890. Remarkably, the Julia Ann was the only such vessel to be shipwrecked with loss of life. A substantial online literature relating to the voyage is growing even now.Sabin, 63978; not recorded by the Hill catalogue. US$11,850

Sadly, a month after their visit to the New Theatre Royal, both contracted measles. The 22-year old Queen, Kamamalu died on 8 July, 1824, and the King shortly afterwards. US$4500

Shanghai, [1889].First edition of the first comprehensive survey of the ‘Three Gorges” of the Yangtze River, with a splendid 97-page panoramic pictorial birds-eye map of the river from its lower part to the upper reaches. This was the first comprehensive survey of the Three Gorges and records a section of the Yangtze which can no longer be visited since the completion of the Three Gorges Dam in 2008 closed the river to small craft navigation and obliterated entire settlements. The hugely controversial project flooded archaeological and cultural sites, displaced some 1.3 million people, and is causing significant ecological changes. US$13,800
