HORIZON 5th GRADE ART
Overarching Concept: CONNECTIONS
Essential Question: How does art connect to the world around me?

Zentangle Designs Students will begin the quarter by discussing each of the Horizon HI-5s and how they are used
in school and in art class.
Students will explore pattern and design through the practice of the Zentangle drawing
technique.
Students will expand their skills by including shading with at least five values in several of their
patterns. This unit is designed to reinforce classroom and schoolwide expectations and norms.
Jazz Collage and Printmaking
Students will create a collagraph print of a musical instrument over a textured collage.
Students will explore jazz music and the Harlem Renaissance through the art of Romare
Bearden and by listening to musical selections that are also discussed in their music classes.
Students will use repetition and rhythm to connect visual art to this important musical
movement.

How are music and art related?
What is the Harlem Renaissance and why is it an important part of American history?
What is printmaking?
How do artists and musicians use rhythm?
Expressive Abstract Mask Sculptures and Oil Pastel Drawings
Students will create expressive relief mask sculptures using cardboard, acrylic paint, and oil
pastels. Students will use color schemes to create expression after exploring traditional African
masks. Students will investigate the artwork of Pablo Picasso and compare and contrast the
influences of African art. Students will create an oil pastel drawing of their mask deepening
their understanding of working in a theme.

How can art show expression?
What is abstract art?
How is African art similar or different to Pablo Picasso’s abstract style?
How was Lois Mailou Jones inspired by African art?
Monochromatic Landscape Painting Students will create a monochromatic nighttime landscape painting using acrylic paint.
Students will mix white paint with a base color to make a progression of light to dark tints.
Students will learn about craftsmanship and attention to detail by painting branches using
realism.
Students will investigate artists Hiroshige and Vincent Van Gogh to explore the landscape
genre.

How do artists organize color?
What is a monochromatic color scheme?
Why do artists create landscapes?
Bison Print Students will create a symmetrical print of a bison using tempera paint. Students will create
warm or cool textured backgrounds using the wax resist watercolor technique. Students will
investigate the artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe and discuss Oklahoma state symbols.

What are warm and cool color schemes?
How do artists use symbols?
