Using the iPad 2 for Capturing Content
Grade Level: 12Subject: Media Production (Graphic Design)

Overview and Purpose:The purpose of this lesson is to teach students how to capture audio, video, and still images
using their iPads.

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
locate and tell about the three iPad Apps being used for this assignment(Remembering)
distinguish between media content types (audio notes, still images, motion images)(Distinguishing)
experiment with and operate the three key apps (iPhoto, Camera, Audio Memos Free)
and complete the requirements for recording and documenting their first week as a
Senior at ASK. (Applying) produce the varied footage needed to use subsequently in the course (Applying)

Materials Needed:
iPad 2 (one for each student or students may share and work in groups of two)
iPhoto App
Audio Memos Free App
Computer
Projector and StarBoard
Printed Content Checklist for students
Information:
This activity, set over one 80 minute class period, is intended to serve as an introductionto using the iPad 2 as a media recording device. The teacher will have an iPad 2 for
demonstration purposes and students will be assigned an iPad 2 with the following Apps
loaded using Apple Configurator for the purpose of todays lesson: iPhoto, Camera, AudioMemos Free.
Activity:
Instruction: (25 minutes)The teacher will introduce the iPad 2, and guide students through the Camera App, iPhoto,
and Audio Memos Free using an iPad 2 for demonstration purposes. Students will followalong with their iPad 2s. This is a great opportunity to answer questions on the fly and
have students experiment with hands-on use of the iPad 2.
1. Review sensible best care instructions (cases, scratch shields, cleaning)2. Introduce Basic Functions - Home Button, Slide to Unlock, orientation (landscape
vs. portrait), using Lock Rotation via the Side Switch, launching apps, turning off theiPad 2, rebooting the iPad 2.
3. Introduce the Camera App - switching between still and motion, switching betweenfront and back cameras.
4. Introduce the Audio Memos Free App - Recording, Playing, Sending audio notes viaEmail.
5. Introduce iPhoto with a focus on using the app to enhance photos - using Camera
Roll, Tiled View, Help, Share, Information, Edit (Crop & Straighten, Exposure, Color,Brushes, Effects, Auto Enhance, Rotate)
Activity and Investigation: (25 minutes)
Students will be given time to work independently, or in groups, to record still and motionimages and audio notes. This activity can take place in or outside the classroom as
recording audio notes does require a quiet area in order to achieve effective sound capture.
During this time the teacher will be roaming and engaging with students providing feedbackon their test examples and assisting and answering questions when needed.
Extension Assignment (20 minutes)
Using the computer, projector, and StarBoard, the teacher will review the purpose ofthe Extension Assignment (gathering content for future use) and highlight the items
that students will need to record outside of regularly scheduled class time over the next
week (Content Checklist). Ultimately, the content recorded will be used in a multi-mediaassignment introducing the student to their classmates and will be used as reflection piece
at the end of the semester as we look back at your initial impressions and experiencesduring your first week as a Senior at ASK.

Voice Notes
1 audio note narrating your class schedule and the teachers who will
be teaching you (ie: on A Day Period 1 I have Mr. Ogasawara teachingme Graphic Design...on B Days Period 3 I have Mr. Paul teaching me AP
Calculus...)1 audio note for each class you have. This audio note needs to include your
impression of the class during your first week and why you are excited, or notexcited, to be taking it.
Lesson Review (10 minutes)
The teacher will review the lesson orally with students and answer any pertinent queriesstudents may have.
Verification:
Steps to check for understanding:
1. Students will demonstrate their understanding of using the apps to record content and
their ability to share this content by sending one still image, one motion image, andone audio note from their iPad to their teacher using their school email account by the
end of the day.
2. At the beginning of class, one week from this lesson, the teacher will conferenceindividually with students and check that their voice notes, video, and photo folders
contain all content has been outlined in the Student Content Checklist.
NotesThe teacher, or IT Department, will need to have configured each iPad 2 with iPhoto and
Audio Notes Free. Student iPad 2s should also be connected to campus wifi and student
exchange email accounts configured to the devices before beginning this lesson.
