As we enter the last quarter of the year the Thai manufacturing industry is benefiting from a stable political situation and numerous Thai government investments. For 2014, the electrical appliance and electronics industries are expected to increase by 2-3% over 2013. And the Semiconductor Industry is projected to reach US$316 billion - an increase of 4.1% compared to last year. The automotive industry is also projected to show an increase for both domestic and international sales.

With the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) looming on the horizon Thailand is set to become a regional economic, trade, and investment hub. But the AEC will also bring challenges and competition so Thai entrepreneurs need to look outside current markets and be prepared to reduce costs which will add value and appeal to their products. Currently, only a few Thai entrepreneurs have design capabilities with the majority relying on outside suppliers. In order to expand, companies need to develop their own design capability. Another challenge is the lack of commitment with long term investment and human resource development, research and technology.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS THAILAND - The Regional IndustrialPart-Manufacturing Hub of ASEAN

In 2015, Thailand will integrate with the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) becoming one of the top five member countries that can expect rising foreign direct invest-ment (FDI). Last year, Thailand recorded US$13 billion in foreign direct investment and is expected to see continuous growth once the AEC is fully operating. Increased Foreign Direct Investment, the Eco Second Phase Project, plus Government investment in the country’s infrastructure & logistics will spur growth as never before. The integrated ASEAN Economic Com-munity (AEC) will also play a major role. Beneficiaries will include multiple industries, but especially the Au-tomotive, Auto Parts, Electronics, Electrical Appliance and Furniture industries.

A PLUS FOR THAI INDUSTRIAL PART MANUFACTURING

Thailand enjoys many advantages over other ASEAN countries in quality, productivity (sales/employee), and low costs (due to greater localization). With further production expansion Thailand offers outstanding oppor-tunities for entrepreneurs. Thai suppliers benefit from expansion of production by OEMs which help achieve greater economies of scale. With the rise in the Yen and the risk from supply chain concentration, more Japanese suppliers, especially Tier 2 & Tier 3 operations are transferring production to Thailand.

Another major benefit is the Kingdom’s excellent logistics location - right in the centre of the AEC with more than five neighboring countries close by. Setting up a manufacturing base in Thailand will automati-cally minimize transportation and logistics costs for Japanese operations.

The AEC will bring both challenges and opportunity for Industrial part manufacturers so entrepreneurs need to prepare for competition. Thailand’s Industrial part manufacturing industry needs to look beyond current markets as new business opportunities in Aviation parts and the Medical Device industry are already becoming a reality.

The ASEAN Single Aviation Market (SAM) will introduce an open-sky arrangement to the region in 2015. ASEAN is set to benefit from the growth in air travel along with trade, investment and service between member States. Thailand has already emerged as a successful Regional Medical Center in terms of the capabilities of its increasingly renowned doctors and international health which come at relatively affordable prices. In fact Thailand is becoming a popular medical tourism destination, attracting visitor/patients from all over the world. Currently, there is less competition in these two industries which provides excellent opportunities for entrepreneurs.

With the above opportunities plus the launch of the AEC, Thai entrepreneurs need to upgrade and invest in new machinery and equipment. The introduction of auto-mation systems able to meet industry standards are just one of the requirements requires in this market. WELCOME KHUN SORNKIN PLOYMEE

Khun Sornkin Ploymee, the newly promoted Director of BUILD, started her career at BOI in 1990. In 1993, she was given the opportunity to oversee projects addressing industrial equipment. She then moved on to the automotive industry which she covered for over 10 years. Khun Sornkin then transferred to the Office of Economic and Investment Affairs at Osaka where she worked for more than 3 years. We are fortunate to have her share her extensive experience with us regarding opportunities in the area of supporting industry.

“My decision to transfer to Japan was based on what I believed would benefit investors by encouraging them to invest in the Japanese automotive industry. At the time, this was Thailand’s key industry. But, Osaka was not an automotive production center. Most of its operations covered the electronics business. The only company in the automotive industry at Osaka was Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota. At that time, the company was not interested in Thailand as they had already invested in Malaysia. So my first move was to invite companies to outsource parts to the Kingdom. Companies were already planning to source parts throughout ASEAN so I made appointments to promote and discuss Thai opportunities. I am happy to report that these negotiations were successful.”

The areas that BOI Osaka covered included the Western part of Japan - the Kansai area, which has 7 provinces along with Shikoku Island which has four. Most Investors in these areas were SMEs. At the time,

all entrepreneurs in Japan, whether big or small, were experiencing problems. The Japanese market was shrinking as the country aged and spending was reduced accordingly. Labor costs and deteriorating economic conditions were also exacerbating the problem. Entrepre-neurs were looking for opportunities to invest abroad in order to expand their markets and each province was trying to help SMEs survive. One of the best ways of doing this was to invest in new markets. Each province has different policies to assist SMEs but by encouraging them to invest overseas new opportunities to expand soon followed and finding business partners for joint ventures became easier.

ออกไปลงทนตางประเทศเพอขยายตลาด บางกลมกตองตามลกคาไปนนเอง

ปจจบนแตละจงหวดในญปนเขาพยายามชวยเหลอ SMEs ใหสามารถอยรอดได

ทางหนงกคอไปลงทนในตางประเทศ เพอหาตลาดใหมๆ ซงแตละจงหวดจะมนโย

บายชวยเหลอทแตกตางกน การไปลงทนตางประเทศของ SMEs ญปน ไมใช

เพยงซอขายอยางเดยว แตตองการขยายชองทางการทำาธรกจ หาผรวมทน

หรอ Partner ในรปแบบตางๆ เชน ใหการชวยเหลอดานเทคนค หาตวแทน

จำาหนาย เปนตน

การทำางานทญปนในปแรก เปนการหาลทางเขาถงกลมเปาหมาย ปทสองเรม

รจกผประกอบการ มเครอขายการทำางานเพมขน ไดรบรความตองการของผ

และกำาหนดแผนงานใหชดเจนเปนรปธรรมมากขน ซงนโยบายนถอวานาสนใจ

“In the past, investors have chosen to invest in Thailand because of low production costs. Another reason was population size. With over 67 million people, this is a very big market. We point out to investors that Thailand has good infrastructure and strong industry support. These two features make Thailand a better investment choice than other countries in the region.

Thailand also has Industrial Estates that are ready for business. And the cost of land is still reasonable. By comparison Indonesia for example is mostly islands which are not suited for industry and their support industries are still small. In Vietnam, industrial real estate is very expensive and investors are not allowed to own land. Also, infra-structure is lacking. In Thailand, industrial estates receive support from the BOI and foreign investors are allowed to own land. For auto-motive and electronics operations, we have more supporting indus-tries and raw materials are widely available. Investors are con-sidering us because of the size of the country and our strong purchasing power.

Most Japanese investors are mainly SMEs. If you were going to invest abroad what factors should you consider increasing your chance of success? The most important factor is business partnership. We would like someone in the same field, not rival competitors in similar fields. And they should know the Thai market well. A partner should also be able to help us find customers easily. One success story from SUBCON Thailand concerned a Japanese factory owner aged around 70. His business involved recycling metal from the molding process so as to reuse. This gentleman joined the mission group from Osaka and took part in a business match-making program at SUBCON Thailand. It was a challenge to find a match for him but we managed to do so and he has now set up a company in the Kingdom and is preparing to open his business here. This is an example of the kind of partnership matching that is now occurring between Thai and Japanese SMEs.” said the Director.

THAI INDUSTRY WILL HAVE MORE OPPORTUNITIESFOR ENTREPRENEURS WHEN AEC OPENSAlthough Thailand has many strengths we have been held back because we don’t have technology of our own. Entrepreneurs are unable to design and manufacture a full range of products and complete the loop from upsteam to downstream. This is quite different from Japanese SMEs who have knowledge, experience and are able to finish the complete production process. The current problem for the Thai automotive industry is price i.e Japanese investors are asking us to help to reduce production costs. But when the opening of the AEC formally takes place next year it will help us considerably. One of the benefits will be the tax reduction on import materials and production costs. SMEs will be able to set up another factory in a neighbouring country to manufacture some of their products or parts that are labour intensive. The main production and assembly can still be based here in Thailand. Of course the AEC will bring more competition, but there will also be an increase in opportunity so entrepreneurs need to prepare for this major development.” the Director said.

A PERSONAL WORD FROM THE NEW DIRECTOR OF BUILD…“I am very glad to be back at BUILD. I believe my regional experience can further help and encourage Japanese investors to consider thailand and enable them to link up with Thai industries. One thing I have learned throughout my career is how to make foreign investments benefit Thai entrepreneurs - especially Japanese SMEs who are looking for strong partnerships. “Many Thai entrepreneurs still think that foreign investors entering the market are here just to take market share. They are wrong. They are here to seek sound business partnerships - especially with Japanese SMEs. It is the Japanese government’s policy to encourage their SMEs to invest aboard because today’s Japanese market is sinking. The govern-ment has assigned JETRO to support the SMEs. This policy will surely benefit Thai SMEs.

BUILD is also planning to expand into other industries, not just automotive and electronic industries. We have seen the development of business in supporting industries that use a technology base such as Aerospace and Medical Devices. This adds business channels and also reduces risk. A good example is plastic parts for medical devices and also mass production of disposable products including plastic hose, saline bags, packaging etc.”

The Coming Decade…

Recently the Horizon Team had the opportunity to congratulate the new President of the Thai Automotive Industry Association (TAIA), Mr. Thanawat Koomsin, and took opportunity of the meeting to discuss on the future of the Thai automotive industry.

“Currently the industry is recovering from recent economic and political turmoil.” the President said. “But the trend for 2014 is still on the uptrend, with exports projected at 1.2 million cars and domestic sales around 1 million. The production target is 2.2 million vehicles instead of 2.4 million as original forecast.”

“As you know, the country is now entering the ASEAN Economic Community or AEC, and TAIA should consider as the good opportunity for Thailand, but no worries, about increasing competition. This is because each country has its own policy and development plan. The only concern is change of Excise tax structure at that time, which needs to prepare in advance to support integration with the AEC in order to make a smooth transition.”

“Considering the policy of our neighboring countries.” said the President. “Indonesia’s policies focus on Eco

Green Car; Malaysia focuses on advanced technology and for Thailand; we have Eco-Car II Project, which is the high specifications i.e. the car must meet Euro 5 emission standard, fuel consumption should be lower than 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers, (23 km / liter) making it both environmental friendly and fuel economy. There-fore; Thailand is unlikely to export to markets with strong purchasing power and a preference for small cars that meet these qualifications. Instead we are already exporting to Europe and Japan - countries with a preference for smaller cars that are fuel efficient.”

The President also noted that, “Thailand is now one of the top 10 automotive manufacturers in the world,

and the next policy on behalf of TAIA President is to promote an aggressive policy in return of visible result and to further support the industry along with plans that avoid conflict between government and production for the benefit of the industry. When a government wants to introduce a policy, it should include knowledgeable representatives. This encourages brainstorming and helps ensure that a plan is feasible. The goal is to share common orientation and consider production capacity, trends and direction of the industry. Also, policies on roads and logistics (Infrastructure) must be considered for both the short and long term and all factors must be taken into account. This includes policies on the use of renewable energy - for example the use of ethanol or biodiesel fuels. Previously there were too many meetings and discussions between public and private sectors that endeavored to establish fuel guidelines that met international standards while modifying engines so that they were not impacted by warranties. This policy was confusing for drivers and initial fuel costs were driven higher because there were many types of fuel. Thailand has no laws or regulations on the lifetime of a vehicle which means that old cars that are not designed for today’s fuels can continue to use traditional products.

In the past, Thai manufacturers had conflicting goals. For example the policy of fixed fuel pricing made diesel fuel cheaper than benzene. This resulted in remarkable growth for Pickup trucks because these vehicles mainly use diesel fuel. And in the beginning Pickups were not required to pay excise tax. In Thailand, we use the Pickup truck as a general purpose vehicle - both as a passenger car and as a truck for transportation. In other countries, the production of passenger cars and transport vehicles are separately categorized. This resulted in Pickup trucks claiming preference. However, if you ask industry experts, they will often say that growth here is not sustainable and in the future, we may not be so fortunate. Therefore, we need to have an intelligent production plan and set goals for the industry. We need to establish a precise target before the industry was obliged to use local content. People said this was bad and was a kind of trade barrier, but it is now proven that the country’s auto parts industry has grown strongly because it followed a policy that was planned in advance.”

ควรใหภาคอตสาหกรรมเขาไปมสวนรวมในการใหความเหน

หรอระดมสมองดวย เพอใหแผนงานนนมความเปนไปได ตามเปา

หมายทไดรวมกนวางแนวทางไว

กลาวคอ ตองมการพจารณาถงกำาลงการผลต แนวโนมหรอ

ทศทางของภาคอตสาหกรรม การกำาหนดนโยบายดานระบบ

จราจรและขนสง (Infrastructure) ทงในระยะสนและระยะยาว

ทกๆปจจยตองเอามาพจารณาหมด เชน ครงทมการออก

นโยบายใหใชพลงงานทดแทน เชนการใชนำามนเอทานอล หรอ

นำามน ไบโอดเซล สงทเกดขนคอ ตองมการประชมและหารอ

หลายครง ระหวางภาครฐและเอกชน เพอกำาหนดมาตรฐาน

ของเชอเพลงใหเปนตามมาตรฐานสากลและการปรบปรงสภาพของ

เครองยนต เพอไมใหเกดผลกระทบกบการรบประกนคณภาพ

ทงของเครองยนตและอปกรณทเกยวของตางๆ รวมทงเปนการ

ปองกนการเกดความสบสนของผใชรถ และตองพจารณาถง

มภาระตนทนทสงขนเพราะการมนำามนหลายชนดเกนไป เนองจาก

ประเทศไทยยงไมมกฎหรอระเบยบเกยวกบอายการใชงานของ

อตสาหกรรมรถปคอพทสวนมากใชเครองยนตดเซลเตบโต

ซงแตกตางกบประเทศอน ประกอบกบรถปคอพในระยะแรกๆ

ไมตองเสยภาษสรรพสามต และเราใชในลกษณะรถอเนกประสงค

คอใชทงเปนรถนงและรถบรรทกเพอการขนสง ขณะทประเทศอนๆ

ผลตรถยนตนง กบรถเพอการขนสงแยกจากกน นโยบายน

ทำาใหอตสาหกรรมรถปคอพบานเรากลายเปนอนดบ 1 แตถา

ถามนกพฒนาจะบอกวาเปนการโตทผดรปแบบ ในอนาคตอาจ

จะไมโชคดอยางนอก ดงนนจงตองมการวางแผนและมเปาหมาย

อตสาหกรรมทชดเจน เชน เมอกอนมการบงคบใหใช local

content แรกๆคนกบอกวาไมดเปนการกดกนทางการคา แต

ปจจบนจะเหนวาอตสาหกรรมชนสวนยานยนตบานเราเตบโต

และแขงแกรงมาก กเปนเพราะนโยบายทมการวางแผนไวลวงหนา”

“For the next 10-20 years Thai automotive manufac-turing will use the same technology as where the vehicle is made. There will not be more than 10-15 brands or models; lateral parts will be the same but various brands will be used on car bodies. This trend will help manufacturers reach economy of scale. The global trend is towards the electronic car and in my personal opinion Thailand should consider using hydrogen technology. Thai policy on the use of bio-diesel or other energies is considered temporary policy (interim) before electrification technology comes into play. This is because we have no generic power source and we also have limited renewable energy sources. Therefore we have to choose between growing food/crops for consumption or to use as fuel. Current thinking is that we should focus on clean, energy-saving fuel… which is electric.”

“This year, the Thai Automotive Industry Association has been invited to become an Executive Director Member of the Organisation Internationale des Construc-teurs d’Automobiles (OICA). In October of this year, there will be a General Assembly meeting in Korea with official announcement of this appointment. There are currently 38 member countries from all over the world that manufacture cars. Eight of these coun-tries are on the permanent council which includes non-permanent council members - a 3-year term. Around October 2015, Thailand will host the General Assembly. With collaboration among international associations, this is a golden opportunity to further raise the positive image and reputation we already enjoy as the automotive manufacturing hub of ASEAN. The position will enable us to assist other car manu-facturers in setting up manufacturing bases here in Thailand.” the President stated in closing.

The Thai government is now helping the country become the medical hub of Asia. This is because of its pre-emi-nence in the medical industry. Thailand also provides human resources that are acknowledged to be of a top international standard. In 2012, about 2.5 million foreign tourists visited The Kingdom for medical services, which brought in about 121.6 billion baht. At present, Thailand is home to 256 private hospitals all over the country and most of them have been internationally accredited as No. 1 in Asia.

To strengthen Thailand’s position as the medical hub of Asia, the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) has granted tax exemptions to health-care providers such as rehabilita-tion centers, hospitals, health-food producers and medical instrument manufacturers. These operations are granted corporate income tax exemption for three to eight years.

Thailand’s strong import-export operations help make it a great location for investors, whether they want to sell domestically or export throughout Asia and internationally. The country’s import and export of medical equipment and supplies continues to rise impressively and the market for medical devices has kept pace. In 2012, the medical market in Thailand was US$2 billion, a 24% increase from the previous year. It is predicted to reach US$3 billion in 2014. Also the market will continue to grow as the demand for healthcare rises with the country’s steady economic development.

Public hospitals in Thailand now account for roughly 55% of total medical device purchases and will be good places for companies to upgrade their medical equipment with more sophisticated products. Demand for medical devices in Thailand is driven by medical facility upgrades and replacement of old medical devices/equipment in public and private hospitals.

Thailand lags in the production of high-tech medical devices. Currently nearly all of the highly sophisticated equipment used here is imported. Of the more than 300 local manufacturers that have registered with the Thai

FDA, the vast majority are making basic products such as bandages, sutures, syringes, blood transfusion sets, disposable gowns, examination gloves, condoms, HIV and AIDS kits, and wheelchairs. As a result Thailand remains heavily dependent on importing more sophisticated equip-ment such as ocular prostheses, heart valves, electrocar-diographs, ultrasound and X-ray equipment, dental drill engines and artificial teeth, among many others.

Thailand offers ample opportunity for new investment in local medical device manufacturing, and the country is an excellent cost-effective production site. Major international manufacturers already have a presence in the Thai medical industry - attracted by the Kingdom’s strategic location as a regional hub and the strong domestic market. These companies include; 3M, Bausch & Lomb, Baxter, Boston Scientific, Carl Zeiss, Diethelm, GE Medical Systems, Guidant, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Philips, Roche Diagnostics, Siemens, Tyco, Sempermed Hoya, Molnlycke Healthcare, Safeskin, and Kawasumi Laboratories.

Thailand imports many medical devices from Japan which is looking to set up production plants in the region. Thailand is one of their top interests because of

lower costs and shortened delivery times within the ASEAN market. Thai and ASEAN supporting industries, along with parts manufacturers, stand to from this.

Within 2-3 years, there will be changes in the production of medical device parts and production facilities are currently being developed in Singapore, Japan, the USA and Europe. Many companies are expanding to Thailand and are contracting the production of medical parts here. These business opportunities are creating the need for machinery and technologies that accommodate customized automation using flexible modular techniques and inte-grated software. This technology will give entrepreneurs a competitive edge, help reduce costs and increase efficiency - further advancing Thailand as a major medical device hub.

Recently, Horizons magazine had the opportunity to interview Professor Dr. Yoshinori Maekawa during his visit to Bangkok. Dr. Maekawa is a professor at the Department of Information Systems Engineering, Osaka Sangyo University. He is a former president of the Japan Society of Die & Mould Technology and one of Japan’s leading specialists in this field. He is also an advisor to many of Japan’s major international auto-part corpo-rations.

We began the interview by requesting Dr. Maekawa’s views on Thailand as a production base for ASEAN.

“With political tension between Japan and China growing, I believe Japanese companies and SMEs should seriously consider moving their production facilities from China to ASEAN,” the Professor said. “Large Japanese corpo-rations have the power and money to invest in various ASEAN countries, but I strongly believe Thailand is the best destination for Japanese investors, especially SMEs.”

“Tier 1 and 2 Japanese SMEs who are looking to invest in the automotive industry and auto-parts industries can use Thailand as their production base and then export to ASEAN, China, India, and the Middle East. Following the launch of the AEC in January, Japanese investors will benefit from this single market which is comprised of 10 ASEAN nations. Manufacturers will be able to benefit from reduced or even zero taxes on some raw materials and products that are exported/imported from countries within the AEC. Thailand is in an excellent logistics location - in the centre of the AEC with five neighboring countries close at hand. Setting up a manufacturing base in Thailand will minimize transportation and logistics costs for a company.”

We asked the Professor why he preferred Thailand for business over other ASEAN countries.

“There are many Japanese SMEs already established in Thailand which supports a strong business network and makes it easier for new Japanese SMEs to get started,” he said. “In addition, Thai culture, and lifestyle are similar to that of Japan and the country is considered to be safe. There are also many Japanese foods and restaurants that make living here enjoyable.” he added.

The Professor went on to say that he believed the future for Thai manufacturing and Japanese investors will bring new technology and manufacturing techniques to Thailand. “Thai manufacturers should be aware that Japanese SMEs employ efficient technologies and always strive for cooperation in order to produce the most advanced product. However, the Thai manufac-turing industry should not rest just on the automotive, and electronics industries alone.

I believe there are good opportunities for Thai SMEs to move into the Aerospace and Medical Device industries as well.” he said.

“Medical Device opportunities are attractive because today people are living longer, and there are growing numbers of middle-class families. Thailand is already known as the medical hub of Asia, which is another advantage.” the Professor noted.

“Regarding the Aerospace industry, large corporations such as GE, Boeing, Rolls Royce and Airbus from the USA and Europe are not interested in trusting manu-factured parts to China. Thailand is in fact in a good position in this regard and has an excellent central location, but moving into these areas is a challenge. However the opportunities are huge and there are not many players in the current market.” he pointed out.

Professor Maekawa has been working with INTER-MACH & SUBCON Thailand for many years. For the

2015 show, he will help organize and recruit Japanese SMEs as well as invite Japanese delegations to the event. His expertise will be of particular benefit to those interested in the Medical Device and Aerospace Industries.

“Delegations will be able to meet and discuss business opportunities with Thai Part Makers in person at the show.” the Professor said, “a big advantage”

In closing, Professor Maekawa mentioned that he will also help organize two important Seminars on Medical Devices and Aerospace that will be delivered at the show. A High Level Mould & Die Workshop will be another feature of the 2015 event and the Professor will introduce well-known speakers from Japan who will discuss the Thai Manufacturing industry and its promising future.

In 2008 when he was in his early thirties Khun Chew, our General Manager, left his family business and with some working capital and a piece of land, started a new business for cutting and bending industrial metals. His factory is located on a small road (soi) in Bangbua Thong district. His brother also has a factory which is prominently located on a main entrance road. His brother offer full service.

“To be able to survive, we try to deliver quality work with no exception. A year before the major floods, we invested in new machinery because our business was growing and we needed to expand. Unfortunately, we could not expand the factory because we were sur-rounded by local communities. We thought about moving to Prawet district but if we did we would have the same customers. So we decided to expand to another location. The options were Chonburi and Ayutthaya province. However, Chonburi is quite far from Bangbua Thong which is not suitable for a daily commute, so we moved to Ayutthaya and ordered 2 new machines for the business. Then came the floods. There were no orders and we lost some business. But I am happy to tell you that the setback was only temporary and today we are back to full operation and have a staff of over forty.”

Khun Chew went on to say, “Because of the location of our new factory, there was no need to look for customers. A lot of our business comes from walk-in customers and we continue to focus on product quality at a rea-sonable price. Through word of mouth, our existing customers actually help to bring in new business. We maintain a standard price structure and offer service for both regular and complicated jobs. If a certain job is a challenge we always accept because it helps expand our capability.

We have a diverse group of customers and most of our work is for Machinery and Agricultural parts, along with Electronic, Mechanical parts and Kitchen appliances. We have a variety of customers, some of whom come from other provinces to subcontract work to us because they are not able to meet deadlines.

For cutting and sheet metal fabrication, we try to offer a one stop service. Customers are delighted with this and another advantage is that we also offer both turnkey and partial service.

As for molding, if we cannot do a job then other factories in this area are probably in the same boat. We like

complicated jobs because they help us to grow our expertise. We accept all types of work no matter how complicated, and with our one-stop service customers do not need to rehire someone else for finishing. The only thing that we don’t do at this moment is in-house colouring and coating. We do not like mass produced jobs and prefer complicated ones - especially when the number of pieces make the work more profitable.”

On the use of machinery Khun Chew said, “The most important factor for purchasing a machine is

to select equipment that can do the job. When buying I consider both new and used machines. Customers don’t know whether we use new or old machinery but we never compromise on quality. Price is a factor in most businesses and sometimes a customer will ask why we do not use this brand rather than that brand. The end result is what counts so we always make an initial prototype so that our customers will be fully satisfied with our work.”

“I really don’t know much about economics but a slow economy and the Coup has not affected our business. We are receiving orders without interruption. This is probably because our customers are mainly in the sheet metal business, which is quite diverse. We do not have a specific customer group. The Laser eX Series has also been developed for ease of operation so users can monitor their work and correct problems themselves. We will provide the monitoring program for the machine and additional basic fixing information which allows users to undertake self-repair. The Eco Mode (ecology energy- saving) is a standard Mitsubishi system that saves energy and contributes to helping reduce global warming. The machine will stop automatically if no operation is in progress which optimizes the cutting operation for thinner materials providing faster work procedure. This is done by adding the F-CUT Function - a system that controls the function

of the laser beam to shift from on and off without having to stop the flow during cutting. This enables continuous operation. There is also a FAB Control (Beam Optimized Technology FABRICATION MITSUBISHI Original “Control”) for punching thick materials faster which can help reduce cost production costs significantly.

Much has happened in Myanmar since the country was freed and its economy began to change for the better. BIRTH OF A NATION

Myanmar’s economy is currently on track to grow by 7.8% in both Fiscal Year 2014 which ends in March of 2015. Growth is supported by rising investment and propelled by improved business confidence, commodity exports, rising production of natural gas, booming tourism, and strong credit growth. All these developments are backed by the government’s ambitious structural reform program.

This year tourist arrivals in Myanmar have risen substantially - July had 195,446 up from 175,636 in June. And visitors averaged 187,788 from 2012 to 2014, reaching an all-time high of 269,045 in January of 2014. Tourist arrivals in Myanmar are accurately reported by the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development.

The economy also continued to benefit from rising investments, driven by inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) and the government’s on-going infrastructure projects. According to a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, FDI inflows were $3.2 billion in the first eleven months of 2013-2014, a huge rise from $1.4 billion recorded over 2012-2013.

Foreign investments in Myanmar are likely to gather pace this fiscal year. The authorities are expected to allocate banking licenses to as many as 10 foreign banks by October and limited operations will soon be underway. Investments will also flow into the oil and gas sector following the recent granting of offshore licenses.

In telecommunications, Norway’s Telenor and Qatar’s Ooredoo have won licenses to build and operate a national wireless network in Myanmar for 15 years. The opening of the telecom sector will also drive mobile phone penetration, which currently is very low at 9 percent. FDI will also continue to flow into hotels and tourism given the growth in the sector and the acute shortage of hotel rooms. Figures for 2014-2015 will likely end up much higher than the $432 million generated between April 2013 and February 2014.
