FCWHORIZONTAL BORING MACHINE ŠKODA
The FCW machine capabilities can be considerably enhanced by application of various technological accessories. These
include chain-type tool replacement systems with tool magazines of capacity 40 to 120 tools, milling and boring heads,
measuring probes for checking the condition of the tools and the work pieces, chip conveyors, base plates and clamping
angles. Among the services offered by the machine manufacturer to the customers are process specifications for the
machining of reference work pieces, process specifications for other work pieces including supply of the required
technology, supply of the data needed for the post-processor creation, supply of the necessary clamping devices and of
the tool preparation and adjustment devices. The scope of the ŠMT supplies includes the machine assembly, installation
and commissioning, as well as the programmer and machine operator training.

The company ŠKODA MACHINE TOOL a.s. continues its more than 100 years long tradition of precision machine tool
manufacturing. Based on a situation analysis and taking into account the positions of their traditional and potential
customers, the ŠMT management have decided to further develop the concept of the successful FCW product line and
prepare an innovated machine version using the latest knowledge and feedback from the application of the company's
heavy horizontal boring machines.
The new FCW horizontal boring machines will find application in dusty working environments and jobs including cast iron,
plastic material or GFK machining. They are also considered the best solution for machining box-type component parts of
complex shapes for various industries including power generation, ship-building, mining, chemical, arms and transport
equipment manufacturing.
FCW MACHINES - BASIC INFORMATION

FCW spindle headstock• of a slide-type design, a box-shaped grey iron casting;
• combined rolling-contact slide guide ways of a compact
design;
• equipment for correction adjustments of the horizontal
slide movement facilitating:
• automated slide drop compensation during the slide
extension;
• automated compensation of the slide drop due
to the weight of the technological accessories fitted
onto it;
• ball screw drive for the slide extension;
• the Heidehain measuring rule for direct slide extension
measurement with compensation of the longitudinal
thermal expansion of the slide (a proprietary Škoda
patent).
Ram• a grey iron casting;
• fixed milling spindle, expandable boring spindle;
• the milling spindle seated in annular ball bearings
with oblique-angled contact;
• the spindle bearings and bearings of the final gear drive
lubricated by oil mist;
• automated monitoring of the bearing, final gear drive
and ram temperatures;
• the boring spindle accommodated with a sliding
contact in the milling spindle. The boring spindle is
a forged and nitrogen-hardened machine part;
• the cooling liquid is fed through an axial hole
in the spindle;
• the temperature of the oil bath of the main drive
transmission and of the final gear drive is stabilised
using the air cooler fitted onto the machine column;
• angle-controlled stop and spindle position indication
using a rotation sensor;
• automated milling head lubrication.
Bed• a grey iron casting;
• linear rolling-contact bearings for the column movement
on the machine bed;
• telescopic steel covers sloping in the direction to the chip
conveyor. The telescopic cover boxes slide into one another
starting at the bottom of the machine column;
• the toothed rack fitted into the bed with the displacement
box at the column traverse unit (a master-slave system);
• a linear Heidenhain measuring system for direct
measurement of the ccolumn traverse unit displacement
with respect to the machine bed.
FCW MACHINE DESCRIPTION
Column traverse unit• a grey iron casting;
• the column traverse unit moves along the machine bed
on hardened guide ways with rolling-contact elements
on the column. The guide ways are grease lubricated.
The compact rolling-contact guide system absorbs/transfers
all forces acting on the column traverse unit;
• a play-free column displacement system including two
backlesh free drives run in the master-slave mode
of operation;
• hydraulically-controlled clamping units at the carriage
corners (installed upon the customer's request);
• a sensor of the linear Heidenhain measuring system
for direct measurement of the column traverse unit
displacement with respect to the machine bed;
• the operator cabin attached to the column traverse unit
(no independent movement possible).
Column• a box-shaped grey iron casting bolted onto the column
traverse unit section;
• the compact rolling-contact guide system for the spindle
headstock movement along the column absorbs/transfers
all forces acting on the headstock;
• the spindle headstock balancing by means
of counterweights located inside the column. The cable
pulleys are fitted onto the column top plate. The cable ends
are provided with suspension elements for the headstock and
counterweights.
