Jared Petersen and Hayley Waters both shined as up-and-coming junior riders and are beginning to leavetheir mark on grand prix competition as well. Petersen

and Waters went one-two in the Feb. 17 $50,000 HITSGrand Prix, presented byZoetis. Success at the high-est levels runs in their fami-lies and the pair seems to befollowing in the footsteps oftheir accomplished parents, with Jared the son of DerekPetersen and Hayley thedaughter of Chuck Waters, who both competed at theinaugural Pfizer $1 MillionGrand Prix in 2010.

Petersen, of Archer,Florida, was clear with Titus2:11 in four grand prix priorto this win and boasted sev-eral strong finishes, includ-ing a second place ribbon inthe $25,000 SmartPakGrand Prix, presented by Zoetis, at HITS Ocala II. Ger-many’s Martin Otto designed the track and 35 horse andrider combinations rode the first-round course, but only fivereturned for the jump-off.

“When I walked the course, I knew it was going to be per-fect for me and my horse – the lines were set up so that wecould leave strides out in a lot of places and he [Titus 2:11]has the biggest step of any horse I have ever been on, so weare able to leave them out whenever we need to,” said Pe-tersen. He has been riding Titus 2:11, a nine-year-old Hol-steiner gelding, for about a year and a half and has big plans.“I know that he has what it takes for the [Zoetis] Million, I justhope that I can be ready for it,” said Petersen with a laugh.

Australian native Scott Keach, now of Ocala, Florida andAnne Quanbeck’s CoCo were the first to compete in thejump-off. Keach and CoCo had just come off a victoryThursday in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented

by Zoetis, and were on trackfor back-to-back wins. Un-fortunately, Keach went off

course, jumping an extra fence, and settled for fifth place.David Tromp returned next looking for his first win of

the HITS Ocala Winter circuit. Tromp, a New York nativenow of Morriston, Florida, and Zidane Z, owned byDavid Tromp Show Stables, Inc. set the early pace witheight faults in 47.23 seconds. Adrienne Iverson of Cali-fon, New Jersey and her own Sweetheart also sufferedeight faults, and finished in a time of 48.68 seconds. Thepair was fourth.Petersen and Titus 2:11 produced the only double-clear

effort of the day and set the Great American Time To Beatat 45.92 seconds with only Waters left to go.“I tried as hard as I could to put a little pressure on Hay-

ley because I knew that she could go clean and do it fast,”said Petersen.Waters, a junior rider from Sparr, Florida and her mount

Tao Tao 3, owned by Chuck & Dana Waters, unfortunatelyhad a rail come out of the cups at the first fence of the in-and-out. The four-fault round in 50.17 seconds was goodenough for second, leaving Petersen’s lead intact andbumping Tromp to third. With young talent prevalent on the HITS Winter Cir-

cuits this year, the 2013 Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prixmay shape up to be a battle that pits grand prix veter-ans against the sport’s rising stars. Qualifying for therichest class in show jumping at HITS ChampionshipWeekend in Saugerties, New York this fall will con-tinue at HITS Ocala and will offer eight more oppor-tunities, including the $100,000 Sullivan GMC TruckGrand Prix, presented by Great American InsuranceGroup March 17. Jennifer Alfano got down to business andwon the Feb. 17 $10,000 Devoucoux HunterPrix. Alfano of Buffalo, New York and

Sharon O’Neill’s Rose Hill rode to a sweet vic-tory and a $2,800 winner’s check. Sweeter thanusual, however, the win marked a storied returnback to the competition ring for Rose Hill.

“She is only eight-years-old and underwentcolic surgery last May,” said Alfano of theWarmblood mare that carried her to the blue.“She just started showing again and I am re-ally excited to have her back.”

The scenery changed for hunter prix ridersas they moved to the main hunter ring andshowed over a course designed by Doug Rus-sell of Ocala, Florida.

Alfano was second going into the finalround after a score of 86, right behind WinnAlden of Bristow, Virginia aboard BarbaraSheffield’s Cameo Appearance with an 87. Al-fano was tenth to return in a 12-horse secondround and rode to an impressive 89, whichwas just enough to deliver the win. Alfano alsopiloted Rose Hill to a second and third-placefinish in two HITS Ocala Devoucoux HunterPrix earlier in the circuit.

Despite the chilly weather that rolled in andprompted some frisky antics from severalhorses during the class, Alfano admits thatRose Hill was focused and pretty unflappablethroughout the day.

“She walked right into the new ring and gotit done,” said Alfano of Rose Hill. “She is soeasy and fun – she is the kind of horse thateveryone wants in their barn.”

After an 86 in round two gave him a total scoreof 173, just two points below Alfano, Alden andCameo Appearance finished second. AmandaSteege has already been in the Devoucoux Hunter

two wins already pocketed, Shachine Belle ofFarmington, Connecticut and Robin Swinder-man’s INXS finished fourth with a score of166.75. Paul Mathews of Somerset, Virginiafell just short of Belle and rounded out the topfive with a 166.5 on Terry Morrison’s Carino. With four more qualifying opportunities for

the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Finalduring the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit, Alfano ishopeful that Rose Hill is the horse to get her toHITS Championship Weekend this fall. “She’s aperfect horse for that class. She shows in the 3’6”Performance Division and was champion thisweek, so she is really getting back into form. Wedefinitely hope to qualify and ride in the$500,000 class in Saugerties,” she said.

$1,500 HITS HUNTER PRIX Amy Zettler of Aldie, Virginia bested 52 to

pilot her own Glad Rags to the top of the$1,500 HITS Hunter Prix. After a second-placefinish the previous week, Zettler is sitting nearthe top of the rider standings for September’sHITS $250,000 Hunter Prix Final. Meghan Kaupp of Pittsford, New York was

second aboard Serenity Farm’s Q and LenaRae Reeb of Weston, Connecticut finishedthird with Jamie Ringel’s Private Ryan. Aftera win in last year’s HITS Children HunterPony Final, Reeb is looking forward to a tri-umphant return to Saugerties, New York thisyear and an appearance in the HITS HunterPrix Final during HITS ChampionshipWeekend.Lynn Seithel of Wadmalaw Island, South

Scott Keach could not have been happier with the wayhis young horse performed Feb. 14 in the $25,000SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis. The Aus-

tralia native, now residing in Ocala, Florida, and CoCo,owned by Anne Quanbeck, bested a field of 34 for the winand look forward to competing in the $100,000 SullivanGMC Truck Grand Prix, presented by Great American In-surance Group, at the conclusion of the HITS Ocala WinterCircuit March 17.During Week III, Keach and CoCo had an unlucky rail in

the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, to keepthem out of the top five, but scored a redeeming ride over a

course designed by Martin Otto of Muenster, Germany. Witha double combination, a triple combination and a an optionto jump either the open water or a big oxer on the rail atfence eight, Otto’s course proved to be nothing short of ex-citing with six clear rounds to move on to the jump-off. “The hardest part for us was choosing to jump the water,

because she [CoCo] just hasn’t seen a lot of it yet,” said Keachabout the nine-year-old Holsteiner mare that was importedfrom Europe only a year and a half ago. “She has been jump-ing really well lately, getting some grand prix experience andI was really happy with her today – she felt like she just knewwhat she was doing and the course suited her really well.”Keach returned in the middle of the jump-off and saw

three rides before him. The first clear was Laura Linbackof Mundelin, Illinois, setting the Great American Time ToBeat at 47.24 seconds in the irons of Woodrun’s HHDauphin. She was soon bumped from the top spot by TracyFenney of Flower Mound, Texas aboard MTM Farm’sMTM Timon with a time of 45.15 seconds. Dubbed thequeen of the grand prix ring at HITS Ocala, Fenney’sjump-off speed is typically not easy to beat. This time, however, her lead was short-lived as Keach and CoCo fol-lowed with a clean round in 44.81 seconds. The two tripsthat followed were clear and juggled the top-five order, butleft Keach’s lead intact. “Sometimes things just work to your advantage in the jump-

off and today was one of those times for us,” said Keach.Fenney held on to second while Germany’s Andre Thieme

and his own Contanga 3 rode to third with a jump-off timeof 46.34 seconds. Linback finished fourth and Jared Pe-tersen of Archer, Florida rode to fifth with Derek Petersen’sTitus 2:11. David Jennings of Franklin, Tennessee and FullCircle Farm’s Queen of Calla picked up eight faults in thejump-off for sixth place. Keach has high hopes for CoCo and looks forward to

showing in the $100,000 Sullivan GMC Truck Grand Prix, presented by Great American Insurance Group, at the endof the HITS Ocala circuit. “If she keeps improving, she mayeven have a shot at the [Zoetis] $1 Million Grand Prix inSaugerties, but time will tell,” he said.

When a horse and rider enter a show ring, they are notalone. There is someone with them anticipatingevery jump; every turn; every second on the clock.

It’s not a trainer, friend or spectator. Coaxing the horseand encouraging the rider from ringside is the judge.

Mel Stone, Kris Rame and Maryann DiStefano may havevarying backgrounds in the horse industry which led themto signing cards for Horse Shows inthe Sun Ocala, but at one time werethe ones being judged.

“You cannot do this job unless youtruly love the sport,” Stone said.

A 15-year veteran judge withHITS, the Manakin Sabot, VA, resi-dent first entered the equine worldwhen he was about eight-years-old inCanada.

Stone competed in hunters, jumpersand equitation earning him a place onthe Canadian Equestrian team.

He originally became licensed withthe Canadian Equestrian Federation, before moving south and joining theUnited States Equestrian Federationin 1992.

Entering the judge’s booth was hisway of “staying in touch with the horse business,” Stone said.

“It’s a continued love of the sport. It sort of gets in yourblood and you want to stay in it in some way,” he said.

Rame agreed, adding, “It’s part of being a horseman; giv-ing back to the business. Also, being realistic, someday youcan’t ride as many colts in the day anymore.”

Judging for 21 years, Rame said her career choice beganas an animal addiction. As a child, she showed collies androde competitively. She then owned a horse show companyfor several years.

It was while Rame visited her parents at On Top of theWorld when HITS Ocala needed a judge and she stepped in.She enjoyed being a part of the event so much, Rame saidshe moved to Anthony and became contracted with HITS.

“It’s easy to be a big fish in a tiny pond, but to be good, you have to surround yourself with the best and it’s the sameconcept,” she said. “They produce great events and I canonly be as smart as what I’ve witnessed and experienced ortried or see what’s trying and stay up on the cutting edge.”

“This is a good team of people,” added DiStefano, a15-year judge.

Unlike Stone and Rame, DiStefano only rode at an ama-teur level and didn’t make a career from riding. Her love ofhorses began at six-years-old when she began barrel racing.

As a teenager, she breezed Thoroughbreds in Saratoga,NY, then began showing hunters.

When she witnessed a disturbing scene at a horse show,DiStefano decided to become a licensed steward so she could

help make a difference, she said. Now, the Long Island resident

said she creates her judging sched-ule around the weeks of HITS Ocalaand HITS Saugerties.

“It’s a perfect job for me; there’s nothing else I would wantto do,” DiStefano said. Rame said judging at HITS is a group effort. DiStefano

and Stone agreed. Everyone works together, from management to course de-

signers, Rame explained, to make sure the course runssmoothly and judges are able to be as accurate as possible. Each judge has their own method for staying organized;

from the way they lay out the cards to the supplies they bring.DiStefano and Stone explained it as having “an office

on wheels.” “The important thing is to be well organized and be well

aware of your surroundings. When a horse and rider come inthe arena, your only concern isthat horse and rider,” Stone said. Keeping a notebook of every

course, rider and score through-out the circuit is the one thingeach judge does that is similar. “Just in case there’s a clerical

or confusion somewhere down the line,” Rame explained. “Be-cause with this amount of paperwork flying around; we are notcomputers and that’s a good thing. We’re all horsemen.”It is because they are horsemen and women that judges are here.DiStefano said having the first-hand experience from the

riders’ perspective is what helps them in their field. Having tomove from course to course, and discipline to discipline keepsthem sharp. The courses, riders, horses and nature of the event have

evolved over the years, Stone said. “When I used to ride, things weren’t as technical as they

are today,” he said. “When you’re a judge, after doing it forso many years, you think you (have) seen everything, then all

of a sudden something else pops up. You’ve got to be right ontop of your game.”They all agreed that what hasn’t changed is the love and thrill

of the show. “When you can watch quality, there’s nothing more exciting

than that,” Rame said.DiStefano added, “This is like my therapy. It’s very enjoying.

The statistics are sobering. Studies have shown that 63% ofperformance horses and a staggering 93% of racehorsessuffer from Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS).

Even young horses in their first few months of life are atrisk. Approximately 57% of foals develop stomach ulcers, with the stress of weaning often blamed as a likely cause. If that’s not alarming enough, 75% of veterinarians ques-

tioned in a recent study believe that ulcers are actually under-diagnosed. Because the only definitive way to determine if ahorse has stomach ulcers is by veteri-nary exam via endoscope, horses oftengo undiagnosed when veterinariansdon’t have access to such equipment. Chronic ulcers may result in weight

loss, poor hair coat, and repeated low-grade colic. Before you heave a sighof relief and think, “Whew, at leastmy horse isn’t showing those symp-toms,” it’s important to realize thatsigns of ulcers can be subtle. A horse may have a slight change in

attitude, seem “grumpy,” or have de-creased performance for no obviousreason. Eating habits may change andhe may show a decreased appetite, usually more towards concentrate, thanhay. But the fact remains, some horseswith ulcers exhibit no clinical signs. “Things that make horses most at

risk for ulcer disease are sporadic

feeding with periods of an empty stomach, or irregular feed-ing with long periods of no intake, high starch diets, exerciseat speed, concurrent illness, especially of a gastrointestinalnature, and use of NSAIDS,” notes internal medicine spe-cialist Carol Clark, DVM, Dipl ACVIM, of Peterson & SmithEquine Hospital in Ocala. Unlike humans, horses produce and secrete stomach acid

round-the-clock. This is not a problem when horses graze(or eat hay) most of the day. However, when the stomach isempty, that acid can eat away at the lining, causing painfulgastric ulcers, which can impact both the upper (squamous)and the lower (glandular) parts of the stomach. “The glandular region has a mucous covering to protect

itself from the acid. Acid is the main culprit since 90% ofulcers affect the upper portion of the stomach, where thereis no protection from acid,” explains April Knudson,

DVM, equine veterinary services manager at Merial.“Horses are meant to be grazing all day long, so they pro-

duce and secrete stomach acid all the time. Having food inthe stomach is one of the most protective things you can do,”adds Knudson, noting that ulcers developed in just a fewdays in studies where food was withheld.

MAKING FORAGE AVAILABLEVeterinarians and equine nutritionists agree it’s a major

mistake not to have forage—pasture, hay, or a combinationof the two—available to the horse most of the day. Unfortu-nately, for great numbers of horses this is reality. Show andracehorses are typically stalled when not being exercised orperforming. Many other horses live without access to pas-ture simply because of climate or stabling options.

Horsemen often make forage available to stalled horsesby hanging a large hay net. While this will slow consump-tion because the horse has to pull out each bite, a major dis-advantage is that the net must be hung high for safetyreasons (to avoid getting a foot or leg hung up), but thismeans the horse is eating in an unnatural position and con-tinually breathing in particles that can lead to respiratoryproblems. Some owners try to solve the forage issue with large hay

bales in paddocks/corrals. Drawbacks include a greatamount of waste, as well as the concern about hay gettingdamp and moldy or mildewed. There’s also the concernabout parasites and sand colic when horses eat hay off theground. When Iowa-based farrier and lifelong horseman Mark

Olson considered the pros and cons of feeding forage 24/7,he came up with an ingenious product that eliminated thenegatives associated with other methods, while offering awin-win for both horse and owner. “I saw how much waste there is with hay. That, combined

with the issue of having forage in front of horses all the time,is what drove me to solve the problem,” says Olson, who de-signed his prototype for The Natural Feeder (www.TheNat-uralFeeder.com) in 2009 and put it on the market in 2010.He invented a convenient feeder made of sturdy low-den-

sity polyethylene that won’t chip, break, or shatter in weatherextremes and has no sharp edges, bolts or screws on whichhorses can get hurt. The feeder holds an entire bale of haywhile a grate “floats” on top of the bale and lowers as thehay is eaten. The horse eats slowly at a natural level with hishead lowered, pulling bites of hay out through the grate’slong oval-shaped openings. Olson designed three sizes ofgrates (each feeder comes with two), depending on the sizeof the horse’s muzzle and the type of hay being fed, fromfine and leafy to thick and stemmy. The grate system allows continuous, but restricted, feed-

ing and eliminates horses eating off the ground where they

can ingest dirt, sand and debris, which can create inflam-mation and impaction in the digestive tract.“It’s a simple idea that works very well,” notes Olson. “It

totally eliminates wasted hay while extending the timehorses can eat. Horses are very content utilizing the feederonce they figure out they can eat and come back and hay isstill available.”“I’ve always fed my horses grass hay 24/7 because I knew

it was important to have forage available at all times, butthere was a great deal of waste. The horses would shovel thehay on the ground and use it for a bed—or worse,” saysWylleen May, a television executive in Los Angeles, whohas a large breeding herd of Gypsy Vanner horses in the U.S.and in England.“These feeders have totally eliminated that problem, plus

they allow me to replicate a horse being out on pasture be-cause they mimic grazing. They’re also incredibly sturdy;I’m still using The Natural Feeders I bought three yearsago,” adds May, whose SD Farm in Acton, California, has nograss because of its high desert location.“The horses regulate how much they eat and there’s not

the food anxiety or drama I used to have with stalled horsesbeing fed hay twice a day. Another health advantage for peo-ple living where sand colic is a concern is that these feederskeep horses from ingesting sand.” HCD

“We want to offer our supporters, localleadership, the Thoroughbred racing commu-nity, potential adopters, and the general public achance to see our life-changing racehorse re-tirement and vocational program up close,” saidLisa Craig, TRF’s Annual Fund Director who iscoordinating the event.

“We appreciate the partnership of The Thor-oughbred Retirement Foundation and partners inthe Ocala community and their help to provideinmates employability skills to prepare them forintegration back in the community,” said FloridaDepartment of Corrections Secretary MikeCrews. “It is a win-win for all involved.”

The farm is currently home to 42 ex-race-horses who receive supervised care from non-vi-olent female offenders participating in a vocationaltraining program in Equine Care Technology. After their release, many graduates of the SecondChances program have used their new skills tohelp acquire jobs within the equine industry andbeyond, and are often quick to credit their equineteachers with helping turn their lives around.

The open house will include a meet-and-greet with the horses, demos of adoptablehorses ridden by current offender-students, farmtours, and brief formal program that will featurea recent Second Chances graduate who is suc-cessfully employed in the local equine industry.Light refreshments will be served.
