Horton Hears a Who: Kindergarten Lesson Book Summary: The moral of the story is that every single one of the “Whos” was necessary, even the smallest “Who”, in order to save their town. An important part of this book is Horton's continual instance that he would help his new friends because “a person's a person, no matter how small”. Horton teaches us that everyone counts. Discussion Questions: 1. What was your favorite part of the story? 2. If you could be any character in the story, who would you like to be? Why? 3. Why did Horton Help the Whos? 4. Will the kangaroos really help protect the Whos? Why? Horton Hears a Who Team Chopstick Game Divide into four teams with the first person from each team standing inside a starting hoop with a pair of chopsticks in their hand. On the signal to begin, players must move through the “Horton” clover patch to the pile of “Whos” in the hula-hoop. Students can use both hands with the chopsticks to pick up a Who and run back through the clover patch to the beginning hoop. Once a player is back, then they place the Who in the bucket and pass the chopsticks to the next person in line. Teams continue to go until time has been called. The team with the most “Whos” in their bucket wins. Equipment needed: 4 hula-hoops, small cups with Clover attachments, 100 cotton balls (for "Whos"), 4 sets of chopsticks, 4 small buckets. Horton Hears a Who! Placemat Coloring: Students will be given a 11” x 17” Horton Hears a Who placemat to color. The placemat will incorporate vocabulary words and pictures found in Horton Hears a Who as well as a Read Across America slogan.
