Teikyo University of Japan in Durham and the Host Family Programme

Teikyo University, located in the City of Durham, is a small, private, Japanese University which offers four-, six-, and ten-month English study courses to first and second year students from Teikyo University in Tokyo, Japan. Courses start in April and last until February.

During their course at Teikyo University of Japan in Durham, the students live in Teikyo’s halls of residence and are taught English Language, British History and Economics. They also follow a busy sports program several times a week. The students are between 18 and 24 and have a variety of interests. They also participate in work experience in local businesses and visit local schools to introduce Japanese culture. The students associate with Durham University students as members of a Durham college during their stay, which links them to various clubs, societies and social events. This gives our students many opportunities to practise their English usually which ranges from near-beginner to intermediate level.

The Host Family Program was established several years ago by Teikyo with the help of Durham County Council’s International Office. It has been organised in the local community of County Durham to help Teikyo students get to know the country and its people better than they would be able to within the narrow boundaries of the University. This link between students from Teikyo University and your family could range from the occasional Sunday lunch, pub nights or leisure trips to actually allowing students into your home for short or longer periods of time during their stay in Durham.

Throughout their stay, the Host Family Programme will be supervised by Alicia Coke, EFL Teacher, under the direction of Eric Baumgartner, Head of EFL (English as a Foreign Language). Teikyo will organise the initial contact and meetings between you and the students before you arrange to invite them to spend time with you.

Thank you for all your help and support as Host Families.
