GENERAL RULES OF THE RALLY

1. The Federation, its officers and servants accept no responsibility for

accidents, loss or damage to any person, exhibit or property. 2. The Committee reserves the right to refuse entry and to vary or cancel

any event or the number of prizes in any event according to the number of exhibitors or competitors. No exhibit shown in previous Rallies may be exhibited.

3. The decision of the Judge is final. 4. Signed objections from members must be submitted to the Secretary

before 3.00pm on the day of the Rally, except for Main Ring competitions, which must be within 15 minutes of the end of the competition.

5. All persons taking part in the Rally must be card holding members of a Bedfordshire Young Farmers’ Club by the 1st May 2018. Any Club,

which is found to be represented by a person who does not comply with this, will be disqualified. Competitors may be required to show their membership cards at any time during the day. Please note entries will only be judged if all entry cards are filled in correctly including membership number.

6. Classes 110, 160, 185, 189, & 193, are National Competitions and therefore National Rules should be read in conjunction with any other rules for these classes. The winners of classes 185, 189 and 193 (Flower Arranging) will go forward together as a team to the National Competition.

RALLY CUP 1. Points will be awarded for the first five positions in all the Rally Classes on

the basis: 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2, except: Main Ring events on the basis: 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1: Decorated Floats on the basis: 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, and 20; and the Club Display on the basis: 20, 16, 12, 8, 4, 2 and 1.

2. Additional points are available towards Section 5 - Main Ring, for material

submitted to the Yearbook Editor by the due. 30 points for a Club Report, 10 points for an article and 5 points each for photographs, jokes, cartoons etc. to a maximum of 50 points in total. Every item submitted will qualify for points, regardless of whether the material is eventually included in the Yearbook.

3. The points awarded in each of the five sections of the Rally will be totalled

to arrive at the position gained by each Club in each section. Points will then be awarded for that position gained on the basis: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 and 4. These points will then be totalled to decide the overall order for the Rally Cup.

4. The winning Club will receive the SIR HAROLD WERNHER CONTEST

CHALLENGE CUP.

SECTION ONE - PRE RALLY CLASSES

Pre Rally Classes will be held on Sunday 25th March 2018 at Manor Farm, Stagsden, Bedford, MK43 8SQ

Entries to be submitted to Rally Secretary by Monday 26th February 2018

Please book in at least 10 minutes before your class starts. All entries will be collected by the judges and stewards and will be displayed at the Rally. 1. Members may only enter ONE AGE GROUP.

2. Competitors may only enter ONE exhibit in each class. 3. Any entry that does not conform to the schedule will be disqualified. 4. Size specified will be strictly adhered to. 5. All competitors should be wearing club colours. 6. The judge’s decision is final.

JUNIOR 1. Ceramic Painting

Ceramic mug to be painted with a farming/countryside theme. Mug will be provided, members to provide all other materials. Time allowed 45 minutes Judge Steward

2. A pop up greeting card

Members to make a pop up greeting card. A selection of coloured card and paper will be provided. All members to bring their own tools and any accessories of their choice. Time allowed 30 minutes. Maximum size A5. Judge Steward

INTERMEDIATE 3. Design for a Farm Sign

Members to create an original artwork using any medium that could be made into a sign at the entrance of a farm. Maximum size A3. Members to provide all materials. Time allowed 45 minutes Judge Steward

4. Kusudama Flowers

A selection of papers will be provided. All members to bring their own tools. Members to make a minimum of three flowers. Time allowed 30 minutes Judge Steward

SENIOR 5. Illustration for a Farm Office

Members to create an original artwork using any medium that could be framed and hung on a farm office wall. Maximum size A3.

Members to provide all materials. Time allowed 45 minutes Judge Steward

6. Quilling

Members to design and make a birthday card using the technique of quilling. Quilling tool and papers will be provided. Maximum size A5. Time allowed 30 Minutes. Judge Steward

OPEN 7. Build a Brick Corner

A team of three members of any age to build a brick corner. Members to provide their own tools. Bricks and mortar will be provided. Judge Steward

8. A Bespoke Christmas Bauble

Maximum of five members of any age from each club to decorate a Christmas bauble. A 100mm black bauble and chalk pen will be provided per member. Members to provide all other materials and accessories (e.g. sparkles, glitter, ribbons etc) Time allowed 30 Minutes Judge Steward

9. A Sheet of Wrapping Paper and Gift Tag

Members to design and produce a standard sheet of gift (50cm x 70cm) and a gift tag for any occasion, using any medium of the competitor’s choice. Members to provide all materials. Time allowed 30 Minutes Judge Steward

10. Copy the expert – DIY SOS A team of three members of any age but must include at least one boy and one girl to complete a DIY challenge. All materials will be provided. Judge Steward

11. Club Promotion

A team of four members of any age to produce a five-minute presentation, a poster and a leaflet to promote YFC and your Club. Judge Steward

12. Pallet Challenge

A team of a maximum of five members of any age group to produce an item of garden furniture. Each team will be provided with four pallets. Extra materials are allowed, however teams will be penalised if the extra materials are considered excessive or excessively pre-prepared! No electricity will be available. No chainsaws allowed. Members to provide all fixings and tools. Time allowed 2 hours. Time will be allocated on Parry Cup Day for painting and staining. Judge Steward

13. Hair Plaiting Challenge

A team of two consisting of one boy to plait one girl’s hair. Members to provide any equipment or accessories that they feel they may require, including hairbrush. Clubs may enter as many teams as they wish. The highest placed team in each club will be awarded points towards the rally cup. Judge Steward

14. Calibrate a Farm Implement

A team of a maximum of 2 members per club, to undertake the calibration of a seed drill. Judge Steward

15. County Ball Night

A team of five members of any age to include a minimum of two males, to dress up one team member for an evening at the County Ball. Outfits will be provided, competitors to provide all other accessories and makeup. Judge Steward

16. Year Book Cover Entries must be submitted by 1.00pm on Pre-Rally day. Entries to be on A5 paper (portrait orientation) and must be mounted on A4 card. Artwork can be produced by computer, hand drawn or a combination of both. The winner will be printed on the 2019 yearbook. Entries will NOT be accepted on Rally Day. Details to be included on Year Book Cover are as follows:

17. Road Sign

One entry per club. To erect a road sign to advertise the Bedfordshire YFC Country Show and Rally 2018. The sign must be staged by 12 noon on Sunday 8th April 2018. Originality of design and location will be taken into consideration. Maximum size 2.5m x 2.5m. Sign must be erected on private land with the permission of the landowner and not on the side of the public highway. Any sign located in a hazardous place will be penalised. A photograph and map showing location of rally sign MUST BE EMAILED to [email protected] by 12 noon on Sunday 8th April 2018. The following details must be included on the sign:

This section is a whole day of competitions including crafts, skills and entertainment and greatly enjoyed by the members.

SECTION 2 – LIVESTOCK CLASSES

1st £8 2nd £6 3rd £4 RULES FOR THE LIVESTOCK SECTION 1. Dairy entries must reach rally secretary Miss Oonagh O’Neill at PreRally 25th March

2018 All other livestock entries including equine must reach Miss Oonagh O’Neill, 30 Grange Road, Ampthill, Bedford, MK45 2PA by Sunday 15th April 2018. Any number of exhibits may be entered and Clubs will be awarded three points per entry (up to a maximum of nine points per class), provided entries are received by 15th April 2018.

2. FIVE penalty points will be deducted for each animal or pen of animals that are entered but fail to be exhibited, unless the member has contacted the Chief Steward who is satisfied with the reason for non-attendance or a valid vet’s certificate is produced.

3. All livestock entries with the exception of the young handler classes must be accompanied by the owner’s signature to confirm that the member has looked after the animal for at least three months, and a photocopy of the MV certificate will be required with the entries.

4. All livestock must be accompanied by relevant DEFRA movement documents and identifying marks/tags. If not, this will result in immediate disqualification and you will be unable to unload livestock and must leave the Rally site immediately. Steward in charge of movements: Mrs Hilary Brown

5. Provision for MV sheep will be made, subject to DEFRA animal health approval 6. All entries to be shown in a ring must be halter trained and manageable. Animals will be

disqualified if not led by a Young Farmer. Any unmanageable or dangerous animals will be

removed from the livestock area. 7. THE PREPARATION AND CARE OF ALL CATTLE, SHEEP AND PIGS ON SITE MUST

ONLY BE DONE BY A YFC MEMBER. 8. Sheep may be exhibited sheared 9. White coats or the relevant breed uniform and suitable footwear must be worn by all

competitors in the dairy, beef, sheep and pig classes. White coats must be worn in the Grand Parade

10. All prize winners from the beef, sheep and pig classes may parade in the Grand Parade at 1.00 pm if they feel competent enough to exhibit. Assistance from other club members will be allowed. All competitors must report at 12.45 pm to the Chief Steward. NB: Grand Parade will be in the Livestock Ring (not the Main Rally Ring)

11. Bulls will not be eligible for entry into the cattle classes. 12. Animals will be disqualified if not ready when judging of their class commences.

13. An individual animal, or group of animals, may only be entered in one class, except for those animals entering best group of three animals exhibited by the same exhibitor or club or the young handlers classes.

14. Animals must not be removed from the site before 4.30pm apart from horses 15. No stock will be allowed on the Rally site on Friday evening. Livestock will be accepted on the

site from 6.30am on Rally Day. 16. All stock must be on the site by 8.30am at the very latest on Rally Day. 17. Livestock classes may be amalgamated at the discretion of the Chief Steward if there are

insufficient entries. 18. There will be a vet on call during the day. 19. Judging commences at 9:00am prompt. 20. The Holding Number for the Rally Site is …/…. /…..

Competitor must not have been placed in a previous Rally in the livestock section. The judge will assess the turnout of the animal and handler, and the handler’s technical ability to show the animal. The confirmation of the animal will not be judged. Limited to three entries per club.

45. Beef Experienced Handler - Open The judge will assess the turnout of the animal and handler, and the handler’s technical ability to show the animal. The confirmation of the animal will not be judged. The winner of this class will qualify for the East of England Smithfield Festival Young Stock Person of the Year. Limited to three entries per club.

SET RECIPES

Class 162: Baked Vegetable Crisps 1 sweet potato, peeled, ends trimmed and halved widthways 1 large parsnip, peeled, ends trimmed and halved widthways 2 fresh beetroot, scrubbed and ends trimmed 2 tablespoons of olive oil Sea salt flakes Preheat oven to 160C (325F) gas mark 3 Line two large baking sheets with non-stick baking paper. Using a spiralizer or a mandoline slicer, slice the vegetables Place in a large bowl and drizzle with the olive oil, sprinkle with a little of the sea salt Spread the vegetables in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, turning the vegetables half way through the cooking time until the crisps are lightly golden and crispy Turn off the oven leaving the baking sheet inside to cool and crisp up. The crisps will become extra crispy as they cool. Sprinkle with a little extra sea salt to serve.

Class 167: Onion Bhajis 2 onions 100g gram flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 green chilli finely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 tablespoon sunflower oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice 5-6 tablespoons water 1 litre vegetable or sunflower oil for frying Spiralize or finely slice the onion with a mandoline Place the flour, baking powder, chilli, coriander, salt, cumin and turmeric in a large bowl and mic well Stir in the sunflower oil, lemon juice and measurement water to make a thick batter Add the onions and stir to coat the batter Taking great care, heat the vegetable or sunflower oil in a wok or deep heavy based saucepan to 180-190 degrees C, or until a cube of bread dropped into the oil turns golden brown on 30 seconds; alternatively, you can use a deep fat fryer Carefully drop tablespoons of the onion batter into the hot oil, cooking four bhajis at a time, and deep fry for 2-3 minutes until golden Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon, drain on kitchen paper whilst you cook the remaining bhaji mixture.

Class 172: Mexican Spicy Bean Burgers 1 onion 1 sweet potato about 275g - peeled, ends trimmed and halved widthways 1 tablespoon sunflower oil 1 green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 2 teaspoons Mexican or fajita spice mix 1 400g can red kidney beans drained and rinsed 4 tablespoons fresh coriander 1 egg 2 teaspoons chipotle paste Salt and freshly ground pepper Spiralize or finely slice the onion and sweet potato with a mandoline Heat the oil in a small frying pan and cook the onion and chilli over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes until softened. Stir in the spice mix and cook for 1 minute Add the sweet potato and stir fry for 4-5 minutes until softened Leave to cool slightly Mash the kidney beans in a large bowl, then add the coriander and season with salt and pepper. Stir in the sweet potato mixture In a small bowl, beat together the egg with the chipotle paste Pour over the sweet potato and bean mixture and mix well with a fork. Divide the mixture into four portions and shape into burgers using your hands. Transfer to a plate and chill for 15 minutes Place the burgers on a non-stick baking sheet and cook under a pre-heated medium hot grill for 4 to 5 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through.

exhibited. 6. All arrangements and exhibits to be arranged at the Rally Site, on either Friday

night between 5.00pm and 9.00pm, or between 7.00am and 10.00am on Rally day. Any exhibits left on site prior to the Rally will be at the exhibitors own risk.

7. The measurements for all classes will be checked at 10.00am on Rally Day and this will be the only time. Sizes specified will be strictly adhered to.

8. Only competitors competing in the Flower Arranging will be allowed into the Flower Arranging Area whilst the competition takes place and only competitors will be allowed back in for five minutes before Judging commences to check that arrangements have not been disturbed during the clearing up operations.

9. Entries must not be removed before 4.30pm. 10. If there are only a few entries in one class the Judge may choose not

An exhibit is composed of natural plant material, with or without accessories, contained within a space specified in a show schedule.

Backgrounds, bases, containers, drapes, exhibit titles and mechanics may always be included in an exhibit, unless otherwise stated. More than one placement may always be include, unless otherwise stated. In all exhibits natural plant material should predominate.

An Accessory is a) Anything other than natural plant material in an exhibit such as coral,

feathers, sea fan, shells, stones. b) Natural plant material which has been tooled or crafted to resemble non

- plant forms, e.g. bird’s nest, corn dolly, wooden figurine.

Accessorise e.g. cakes, figurines, needlework maybe decorated in any way but greater credit should be given for the use of natural plant material where appropriate.

NAFAS Rules that state that disqualification will take place for the following reason:- a) Failure to comply with any specific requirements of a class as stated in

a show schedule i.e. the measurements or the components. b) Inclusion of fresh plant material that does not have roots or the cut

ends of stems in water or water retaining material. Exceptions Air Plants, Cacti, Fruits, Grass Turf, Lichen, Moss, Succulents, Vegetables and long lasting plant material (including strong fibrous stems) which remain turgid for the duration of the show. (Definition of turgid – the state of firmness of plant tissue resulting from adequate moisture, causing the plant cells to be fully expanded).

2018 BEDFORDSHIRE RALLY FLOAT RULES 1. Maximum dimensions for float trailer are as follows: Height: 4.8 metres (from ground) Length: 10 metres Width: 2.5 metres Only one

trailer will be allowed

2. All vehicles must comply with current safety regulations.

3. All machinery must comply with current safety regulations.

4. All floats must be fitted with at least two fixed handrails, one at 1.2 metres and the other at 0.6 metres above the platform of the trailer. These should be constructed from 75mm x 50mm wood, scaffold tube or similar. The handrails must be securely fixed, which ensure the fixing points have at least the same load bearing capabilities as the handrail materials. The handrail supports should be no more than 2 metres apart. A 150mm toe-board must also be fitted.

5. No glass or dangerous material must be used on or in the building of the float.

6. Power driven water pumps are not permitted and only flour filled paper bags to be used as missiles, along with clean water only.

7. All floats to arrive at the Rally Site between 6pm and 8pm on the Friday night when the Rally’s Safety Steward or Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will inspect towing vehicles and floats. A member of the Club must be present at the inspection. A further inspection will take place at 12 noon on Rally Day by which time any defects identified at the Friday night inspection must be rectified. A member of the Club must be present.

8. The inspecting officer may disqualify any float, which, at any time, they deem unsafe or not complying with the safety regulations or any of the above. Clubs will be given a chance to make their floats safe in accordance with rule 7.

9. Drivers of the float must hold a current driving licence and be the Club Leader or a member of the Club’s Advisory Committee. Please note that the Rally site comes within the scope of the drink drive laws. A valid insurance certificate will also need to be shown covering the weekend’s activities. Without this floats WILL NOT be allowed in the main ring. This may be requested to be produced at any point over the Rally weekend.

10. When instructed, the floats will enter the Main Ring and circle the ring at no more than 3mph. Competitors must not board or alight from the float in the Main Ring, except in an emergency, before the battle commences.

11. After judging, the floats will be arranged for battle. Any missiles or water thrown before the start of battle will result in the float being disqualified.

12. Any tractors, which are unhitched before the start of battle and leave the Main Ring until the battle has finished, must leave the trailer level and secure from movement and tipping

13. No part of the float must be used in the battle and competitors are reminded that they must not put anyone else at risk by their activities in the Main Ring.

14. All competitors will clear the Main Ring of debris once the battle has ceased, otherwise points will be deducted.

15. The battle will only be started and finished by the Chief Steward of the Main Ring, anyone continuing after the battle ends will have their float disqualified.

16. Points will be awarded out of a maximum of 50 points and will be made up of 25 points for float, 15 points for costumes and 10 points for overall effect.
