Greetings from the General Co-Chairs
It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 25th Opto-Electronics and Communications Conference (OECC 2020)
which will be held from October 4th to 8th, 2020 at HNBK International Convention Center, Taipei, Taiwan. This conference is
co-hosted by Chunghwa Telecom and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, also known as Taiwan Tech.
OECC is one of the foremost international conferences held annually in the Asia-Pacific region for the engineers and
researchers working in the fields of optoelectronics and optical communication systems/networks. It has been providing the
best international forum to present and discuss the progresses in research, development, and applications of these areas.
OECC 2020 will be held in hybrid mode, both in-person presence as well as on-line presentation and participation, in
response to the extraordinary pandemic situation. Although we would love to see you all in person in Taipei, your health and
safety are of our major concerns. We will try our best to provide fluent presentation and discussions for the hybrid conference
through live Q&A and interactive sessions. In addition to the plenary speeches, invited talks, contributed oral and poster
presentations, there are three industrial workshops and three special symposiums, including OFC-50 and Laser-60 Historical
Symposiums.
On behalf of the organizing committee, we would like to express our sincere welcome to all of you who are participating

The Year 2020 represents the 60th anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser, and is a timely reminder of how basic science
has the power to impact dramatically on society. Indeed, the United Nations now recognizes the date of first laser operation as the International
Day of Light, celebrated annually on 16 May. The 60th anniversary of the laser provides an ideal occasion to reflect on the many ways that

Year 2020 is the special anniversary of Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) and OECC as well. OFC was started when the feasibility of producing a glass fiber with lower optical power loss was demonstrated in 1970. It gave us a variety of possibilities in future through practical optical linkage capable of information exchange in societies. Since then, OFC related technologies
have been dramatically advanced in a lot of fields such as systems, devices, materials etc. making our society wellness. Keeping pace with these advances, a lot of researchers and engineers in these fields were enthusiastic willing to have a platform of presenting/discussing/exchanging ideas/achievements in the Asia/Oceania area around 1995. Then, the first OptoElectronics and
Communication Conference (OECC) opened its history in 1996. Every year, OECC has around 450 technical presentations and more than 500 participants providing progress in these fields. Based on these backgrounds, this special symposium intends to step further toward making a new era with a lot of information by viewing
historical changes so far obtained and viewing future perspectives, presented by outstanding witnesses in these fields.
