THIS WEEK’S MEETING

How to stay COVID safe As we return to the Marriott it is important that we continue to take precautions. We have reviewed and are comfortable with the Marriott's cleaning and safety procedures, public spaces are cleaned down every hour. Currently there are quarantined in house guests so expect to see police. They have been notified of our attendance so you should have no issue gaining entry to the hotel. On 16 July, Qld Health is scheduled to be on Level 2 testing in house guests for COVID. We are on Level 3.

To avoid quarantined guests we need use the carpark lift or if entering from the front door use the single lift on the left of the Lobby and go direct to Level 3. If there happens to be a quarantined guest in the lift, just wait for an empty lift.

• The usual Valet Parking is available.

• At breakfast there will be no shared plates, disposable plates and cutlery may still be in use.

• Greet members with a wave or elbow bump, so we can maintain social distancing.

• Have your COVID Safe app active.

• Physical distancing will be maintained by seating 4 persons to the usual round tables.

• Use the hand sanitizer that is provided.

• The Barrista Coffee Bar is closed but our wait staff may be able to make you a coffee on request, that will need to be paid separately, directly to the hotel.

Our Guest Speaker – Mark Meade from 3rd Space Following our successful appeal for Jocks and Sox for 3rd Space, Mark Meade isattending our meeting this week so we can hear more about the organisation. 3rdSpace Brisbane is a drop-in centre where homeless people find practical support, friendship and dignity. On Friday 10 July 2020 a number of our members joined the Governor General and Mrs Hurley (the R100 CentenaryAmbassadors) via ZOOM for the launch of Rotary’s national centenary campaign. They also witnessed the “Passing theBaton” ceremony. The baton will carry the symbols of our centenary and will travel far and wide across Rotary clubs andDistricts. There was also a performance by Leo Sayer.

Rotary’s Centenary is a time of celebration! - a time to reflect on the past, and take pride in all that has beenachieved. Rotary’s centenary is also the time to lay the foundations for the future, as there is still so much to do. The keyproject in the centenary year is to focus on stopping the one in 16 children who die in nine Pacific nations before the ageof five, the R100 Centenary project, "Rotary Give Every Child a Future"; saving young lives in Pacific nations.

Light to moderate drinking may preserve brain function in older age.The University of Georgia examined the link between alcohol consumption and changes in cognitive function overtime among middle-aged and older adults. Regular, moderate alcohol consumption has been shown to promoteheart health and some research points to a similar protective benefit for brain health. However, many of thesestudies were not designed to isolate the effects of alcohol on cognition or did not measure effects over time.Dr Zhang and his team developed a way to track cognition performance over 10 years using participant data froma health and retirement study. During the study, a total of 19,887 participants completed surveys every twoyears about their health and lifestyle, including questions on drinking habits.

Compared to non-drinkers, they found that those who had a drink or two a day tended to perform better oncognitive tests over time. Even when other important factors known to impact cognition such as age, smoking oreducation level were controlled for, they saw a pattern of light drinking associated with high cognitivetrajectories. The optimal amount of drinks per week was between 10 and 14 drinks. But that doesn’t mean thosewho drink less should start indulging more, explained Dr Zhang. “It is hard to say this effect is causal,” he said.“So, if some people don't drink alcoholic beverages, this study does not encourage them to drink to preventcognitive function decline.”

Barb’s Joke Corner Slim walks into his local police station and notices a new sign on the wall: MAN WANTED FOR ROBBERY IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA. "Gosh!" he says, "If only that job was in Queensland, I'd take it!"

One day Timmy was in his backyard digging a hole. His neighbour, seeing him there, decided to investigate. “Whatcha doin?” he asked.“My goldfish died and I'm burying him,” Timmy replied.“That's a very big hole for a goldfish, ain't it?” asked the neighbour.“That's because he's inside your cat!”
