Editorial ::

Dear Readers,

Thinking about the difference between

design and art, we realise that both

seem to follow their own rules depend-

ing on the different tastes people have.

But unlike art, design is always cus-

tomer and purpose orientated. A good

example is the work of the interior

architect Stevan Stojanovic, who

accountably designed the refurbish-

ment of the entertainment area of the

Golden Tulip Hotel in Zagreb, Croatia.

No matter how innovative and resolute

his creations are, he never, during all

construction stages, lost sight of the

rooms’ purposes. So he created for the

casino and for the nightclub respec-

tively a particular atmosphere that is

exactly orientated to the needs and

wishes of those who spend their time

there. But look and see! We present the

refurbished areas on the following

pages.

We hope that you’ll enjoy reading this

edition, and as always, we are looking

forward to your feedback: What do you

like about The Carpet Magazine, what

don’t you like? Give us a call or send us

an e-mail and do not hesitate being

critical.

Golden Tulip Hotel Holiday, Zagreb, Croatia ::

Vivid colours for vivid nights

At nightfall in Zagreb, the city starts pulsing. People

start to congregate in the many cafés, restaurants,

clubs, and casinos in good temper and with a lust

for life. And that’s what also happens in the entertainment area

of the Golden Tulip Hotel Holiday, which is attracting the selec-

tive nighthawks. One of the reasons might be the new interior

that taps the pulse of the time: the Golden Tulip is colourful and

has a great atmosphere, vivid and spirited. And it is unique,

because though colourful patterns are popular and seen a lot

in the Croatian capital, this work is not comparable to anything

else that Zagreb was offering so far.

Golden Tulip Hotel Holiday, Zagreb, Croatia ::

With the objective of creating something completely new, the architect made high demands on all people concerned, including himself. Every single design was sketched by Stevan Stojanovic, as well as the samples for the room-orientated carpet design.

The Patterns should be exceptional and trend-setting – not only for a new era in inte-rior architecture, but also for the guests. The carpet on the stairs that leads to the enter-tainment area is plain-coloured and framed with a border of hearts. Following this symbol the guests proceed directly through an an-teroom and left to the “Lonely Hearts” night club”. There you’ll also find heart-shaped symbols on the carpet..

Those who prefer trying their luck in gambling should make their way to the anteroom on the promising paradise flowers carpet. This car-pet was produced and installed in one piece with the hearts centre, whereas the flowers decorate the right area of the floor.

Following the paradise flowers the guests get directly to the casino. The truly nail-biting and

The calm before the

storm: At a late hour,

expectant visitors fill

the casino hoping to

have their lucky strike.

The Golden Tulip Hotel Holiday was established in

1980 in view of the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.

It accommodates many sports-mad people. Most

certainly because the owner of the hotel, Mile

Rudan, feels connected to the sports spirit and

always offers special discounts for sports clubs

and sports groups.

In the nightclub of the Golden Tulip Hotel Holiday

fluorescent colours actively contribute to the dynamic

of an inspiring and exciting room concept. Above all

because features aren’t on the walls or columns but

on the carpets!

“ We convinced the management and design team with the promise to make possible, everything. And we did it! For example, we delivered 2,400 m² within 3 weeks from production of the design sample trial” Kristin Sammler, Office Employee Export and Project Manager

promising atmosphere there is reinforced by the carpet’s flower pattern. And who knows, maybe one or other lucky visitor has really found the personal Garden of Eden in this gambler paradise.

Best Western Hotel Ostertor, Bad Salzuflen ::

King-size relaxation:

All beds in the Best Western Hotel

Ostertor are 2.10 metre long.

Between books and clothes: A business hotel with special flair

Bad Salzuflen is a place in the middle of

the East-Westphalia Highland, famous

for its thermal springs, its old town with

historic stud work houses, and since May

2008 also for the modern business centre

Ostertor Galerie. The Carpet Magazine

talked to Frank Michael Baus, Managing

Director of the Best Western Hotel Oster-

tor and Sigrid Neumann, Designer of the

carpet that was developed and installed

in the hotel.

Red elements accompany

the complete concept in this

Best Western.

The Carpet Magazine 13 | 7

The Carpet Magazine: We are sitting here in front of the Ostertor Galerie, actually, on the exterior terrace of the restaurant Rubens en-joying the shade that the sand stone facade is offering us. Mrs. Neumann, what do you think about the building’s facade?E. Dietrich: I read that the idea was to achieve a span between functionality and aesthetics, and in my opinion, that’s exactly what they accomplished. They built on a base area of 8,000 m² a straight-lined structure that in-corporates itself in the historic environment despite all modernity.

The Carpet Magazine: Beside the restaurant, different companies from the service sector, textile, food industry and also the public li-brary are settled here. Mr. Baus, what was the deciding factor to build a hotel in the middle of all these different industries?F. M. Baus: Bad Salzuflen is located in the prospering economic region with many busi-ness travellers, whom we offer with the Best Western Hotel Ostertor a completely new service, specifically designed according to the needs of our business guests. Profes-sional people, in particular, appreciate the central location of the Ostertor Galerie: only a few metres from the lobby to the supermar-ket and in the evening, they can enjoy one of the popular nearby restaurants for a little bit of local lifestyle instead of sitting in a jejune hotel restaurant.

The Carpet Magazine: Do you think that this kind of combination, to build hotels near company infrastructures, will have a stake in the future?

F. M. Baus: Yes, I do think so. These concepts are already very popular in the US, because they show a real benefit to the business trav-eller not to mention our other guests. That’s why we had no problems in convincing Best Western of this location.

The Carpet Magazine: Why did you decide to join this international hotel chain?F. M. Baus: Best Western’s Germany-wide motto is “each different – each fine”. That means for us that we benefit from special guest offers, a good reputation, and also from an approved reservation system. But we also enjoy enough freedom to bring our personal flair and own ideas into it. For ex-ample, the interior design should fulfil high quality standards. But within these general

conditions we were absolutely free concern-ing the designing of our concept.

The Carpet Magazine: Mrs. Neumann, does that mean that you were totally free in the designing of the carpet’s patterns?E. Dietrich: Of course I do not simply design at large. In the beginning, I had many meet-ings with Mr. Baus in order to get a feeling for the Best Western. We determined an ap-proximate colour and shape concept first, and then I adapted it step by step according to the different areas.

The Carpet Magazine: Could you illustrate this with the help of an example?E. Dietrich: Of course. For example, the con-ference area for up to 200 persons can be divided into 5 individually accessible rooms available for a variable number of persons. That’s why I designed the carpet pattern in a way that no matter how the areas will be di-vided, the carpet will always present a com-plete design. Nobody will have the impres-sion to be in a reduced room due to optically cut borders or anything similar. Finally, it is important that each participant gets the feel-ing that the respective area is important.F. M. Baus: And that’s it: every hotel guest is important for us. Each day we want our hotel guests to feel this.

Business guests benefit from floodlit

conference rooms including state-of-

the-art presentation technology.

Well directed spotlights and a sophisti-

cated design make a great experience in

an over 100 metre long corridor.

Huge windows light the breakfast area

offering a view to the tower on the

nearby church.

Room dividing elements, curtains,

plants, and carpets result in exceptional

acoustics.

INTERNORGA 2008 ::

Wonderfully changeableWhenever talking about Step by Step 2, the designers of Halbmond Teppichwerke point out that the patterns presented in this compen-dium can be modified by the customer. A good example is the carpet in the meeting point at the INTERNORGA 2008: the designers re-coloured the pattern – of course using H./G./K. company colours – they added graphic elements and integrated the H./G./K. logo. That’s how the corporate-design-conforming pattern was created fulfilling the lively atmosphere of the meeting point.

Guaranteed splinter-proof ::

UEFA EURO 2008 ::

Welcome on Board!

Live emotions

Visitors of the company Rapp Service Maritim in Rostock, Germany, are welcomed on deck: the view goes beyond the railing and gets then lost in a cloudy horizon. However, nobody runs the risk to get wet, because this maritime world in the interior of this building is produced with the help of a huge mural and a deceptively real-looking carpet in ship plank design. Gerhart Ehlert, Executive of the company Ehlert Raumausstat-tung says: “All rooms of the company are designed like this. Is there better scenery to present distress equipment products?”

Not only does the organisers of the UEFA EURO 2008 noticeably put the Logo and motto to the front, but all the participat-ing companies do so too. So, for example, the Austrian company Phönix Objekte and Halbmond Teppichwerke developed special carpets with an individually created football pattern. These specifically designed carpets were provided to hoteliers in Austria, espe-cially to those nearby the stadiums, in order to give a warm welcome to the football-en-thusiastic guests in their reception areas and to put the guests into mood for the UEFA Eu-ropean Football Championship.

Of course, such a detail does not solely cause euphoria but the mood that dominates during the UEFA European Football Championship results from many different details and activi-ties all resulting in a universal feeling.

We can carry out modifications in

design and colour, as an example,

this turns a pattern from the series

“Signs & Circles” into a specific

customised pattern.

INVISTA marketing activity ::

The filigree and colourful pattern is from

the Halbmond Step by Step 2 Collection,

produced on INVISTA fibres by Antron® carpet

fibre. The innovative characteristics fulfil all

requirements of individual patterns assuring

that architects are able to place their ideas

literally on the floor.

At the beginning of September a photo cir-culated in the expert press causing irrita-tion at first sight. And the initiator, the textile fibres manufacturer provoked the desired reaction: getting attention due to breaking standards.

The aim of the special marketing campaign was to push the expressiveness and crea-

tive possibilities of individual carpets into the consideration of interior architects and final customers. For this aim the carpet was not laid inside but outside the building. And of course not any building: scenery of this un-precedented and aesthetic spectacle was the Paul Klee Centre in Bern, Switzerland, built by the star architect Renzo Piano, represent-atively chosen for grand architecture per se.

Schlosshotel Eisenach ::

Departure to FutureEisenach, idyll between reformation and revolution: 1817, almost 300 years after Martin Luther translated

the New Testament at the Wartburg Castle, students lay at the same place the foundation for the German

Unity presenting for the first time the colours black-red-gold. About 50 years later August Bebel and Wilhelm

Liebknecht founded the former political party SPD in Eisenach. Johann Sebastian Bach and Charlotte von

Stein were born in Eisenach. Goethe was a frequent guest. And also in the following centuries very important

guests regularly visited this village, for example Napoleon, Tsar Alexander, or Bill Clinton.

Welcome to German History:

“ I miss the impetus with the present when a project is only related to tradition. If a pattern only shows vision, I miss the sensual bracing with the building. Art is combining both.” Manfred Kell, Designer

Indeed, there are many reasons to visit Eisenach, and the Schlosshotel: the lovely old town, the Thuringian Forest, the Hoersel Mountains – that according to the legend are supposed to be Mrs. Holle’s homeland – and last but not least, Germany’s most popular castle. Only about 200 years younger than the legendary Wartburg, the Schlosshotel Eisenach, which was built in 1280, can look back on a moving history: Martin Luther him-self might have known the building as he was learning Latin as a student in the today-called Lutherhaus, which is only 50 metres away

from the Schlosshotel. The former Franciscan Monastery in the historic centre of Eisenach is located directly at the top of the market square and was temporarily a monastery brewery and restaurant. In the “Schlosskel-ler”, the basement of the old monastery, even nowadays the guests can enjoy exqui-site wine and food specialties while feeling a breeze of history.

After a complex restoration, the house was rebuilt into a modern hotel and conference centre, and reopened in January 1995. A

new atmosphere of departure was lived 2008 from March to May when carpets designed by Halbmond Teppichwerke were laid in 25 rooms. Due to two different patterns with red and blue grounds a harmonic alliance be-tween old and new was created. The carpet-ing of the other rooms and the corridor areas is planned for the second construction stage in autumn 2008 – the guests can look forward to a perfect encounter between the past and the future.
