SightseeingTHE ALBERT HALL MUSEUM (38) set in Jaipur's Ram Niwas Gardens was modelled on London's Victoria and Albert museum, the inside is a slightly dustier version... Along with stone carvings is an Egyptian mummy and a magni-ficent late 16th century Persian garden carpet, considered one of the finest carpets ever woven. Hours: 10am-4.30pm

Amber lies 7 miles northeast of Jaipur and was the old Rajput capital. The AMBER FORT (39) is breathtakingly beautiful from the outside and its Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors) is the most lavish of all the Rajput palaces, with its walls and ceilings being entirely covered with an intricately patterned inlay of mirrors and coloured glass.

BIRLA MANDIR (40) The elegant temple of Laxmi was built in 1988, and is made entirely of white marble. Within the temple you can find statues of Hindu gods, whilst the outside walls are adorned with great historical personages and religious figures, like Socrates, Buddha, Christ etc.

THE CITY PALACE (41) was built as an integral part of Sawai Jai Singh II new city of Jaipur and combines both Mughal and Rajput styles of architecture superbly. The Maharaja's collec-tion of antique paintings, arms and textiles are breathtaking and as you explore the palace it is interesting to know that the current Maharaja still lives in the Chandra Mahal at the centre of the complex. Whilst his quarters are closed for visitors he can sometimes be seen in the City Palace restaurant.Hours: 9.30am-5pm

GAITOR (42) (6.5 km on the road to Amber)The cenotaphs of all Jaipur rulers, with the exception of Sawai Ishwari Singh, (who was cremated outside the Jai Niwas Garden), were built at this place. The imposing cenotaph of Sawai Jai Singh Stands out for its deli-cate carvings and beautiful shape.

GANESH TEMPLE (43) The famous shrine is nearby Birla Mandir. On Wednesdays, the day of Ganesh, there is a fair, and the best time to go, is at sunset.

HAWA MAHAL (44) (Wind Palace) is Jaipur's most distinc-tive landmark and was built in 1799 to enable the ladies of the royal household to watch the life and the processions of the city. The palace forms part of the City Palace Complex and overlooks the city's main square. Hours: 9am-4.30pm

JAIGARH FORT (45) The top fortress overlooks the palaces and the old town of Amer. The fortress that was built in 1726 is today almost intact. Within its rugged bastions are beautiful palaces, well maintained gardens, a granary and a tall watchtower.The main attraction of the fort is the "Jai Ban" canon, which is considererd to be the world's biggest canon on wheels.Tel : 0141 267 18 48, Hours: 9am-4.30pm

JAL MAHAL (46) The Jal Mahal, or the water palace was built by Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799 on Man Sagar lake. It was built and used as the summer resort of the erstwhile royal family. According to the legend, the women's lovers were thrown in the lake, since it was back then, filled with crocodiles. Nowadays one can only enjoy the palace from a distance, since the lake has dried out.

JANTAR MANTAR (47) Nearby The City Palace is the fascina-ting observatory, Jantar Mantar, which was built by Jai Singh in 1728. Each construction has a specific purpose and your guide will explain how each of the instruments work, and how Jai Singh meticulously measured time by the sun's shadow and its annual progress through the zodiac. Astrology was of huge importance to the Rajput rulers and still plays an important role in marriages and life throughout the state. Hours: 9am-4.30pm

MOTI DOONGRI FORT (48) The fortress atop a hill is a replica of a Scottish castle. It was the private residence of the fourth son of the late Maharaja Man Singh.

NAHARGARH FORT (49) (Tiger fort) was built in 1734 by Sawai Jai Singh II and is a superb example of Rajput military architecture. The 19th century palace, Madhavendra Bhawan was built within the fort for the Maharaja and his nine queens during more peaceful times.The cusped arched, frescoed walls and florally painted walls are exquisite as are the courtyards and terraces.Hours: 9am-4.30pm

RAJ MANDIR CINEMA (50) built in 1976 in a spectacular Art Moderne style is a popular tourist attraction and India's best known cinema building. Bhagwandas Road, Tel: 0141 237 93 72

SISODIA RANI GARDEN (51) The magnificent palace garden was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1779. The beautiful garden is divided by water channels, cascades and fountains. The palace is set on the top terrace of the garden.Hours: 8am-6pm

The temples of Galta are set in a picturesque gorge and on the ridge is the 18th century TEMPLE OF SURYA (52), the sun-god (also known as the monkey temple). It is a wonderful spot, where the monkeys, sadhus (holy men) and peacocks are as diverting as the temples themselves.
