You know when you have entered a healthy home. Regardless of the period and style, there is a sense of harmony and purity that nourishes both body and soul. Over time, you may also notice that you breathe more easily, feel more content, and begin each day with height-ened energy and enthusiasm.

One of the great ironies of the twenti-eth century is that the very technologies intended to enhance our well-being have often undermined our health:

- Modern heating and cooling systems entice us with promises of temperature-perfect rooms, yet colds and allergies plague us

- Chemical additives permit more durable paints, fabrics, wood, and construction materials, yet they fill the air with toxic fumes

A healthy home may resemble the eco-friendly houses that evolved as part of the popular green architecture move-ment of the 1980s and 1990s. Drawing from ancient building techniques, these homes are constructed of earth, clay, straw, or steel-reinforced concrete forms. Solar-powered and naturally cooled, they provide modern comforts without drain-ing resources.

However, you don’t need to set up housekeeping in a monolithic dome or an earth-sheltered dwelling to live in harmony with nature. Even the most traditional home, which may have been built long before the rise in environmen-tal consciousness, can be adapted to incorporate the key principles of healthy design.

- Mass-produced synthetics and com-posite construction materials appear to save money, yet their ingredients trouble us with ailments ranging from mild head-aches to severe depression.

Ultimately, there’s something unsatisfy-ing about wrinkle-proof fabrics and lab-oratory-created walls and floors. Lack-ing the warmth and patina of materials drawn from nature, they sap our spirits in ways that are subtle yet profound.

What Is A Healthy Home?

The healthy home nurtures those who dwell inside and also protects the world beyond its walls. Designed with sensi-tivity for the environment, it is energy-efficient, economical, sustainable, and non-polluting.

Design a Healthy HomeLay the foundation for a healthy home that nourishes your body and soul

House Among Pine Trees

The plot chosen is located in a recently urbanized area call Lloma Bada, a Pe-trer’s suburb. The house is vhon Cerdeña St., isolated in a block still undeveloped.

The position is particularly privileged because it is in the urbanized area boundary, very close to the slopes of the mountain formation east of Petra. An area full of native vegetation, especially pines.

A: House a three floor building in the midle of the plot among the trees holds the rooms and services which make the house

B: Garage located right next to the street this construction has the minimun area needed to place the car, and is connected to the house by a path

C: Pavillon this simple construction in the highest side of the plot provides the users a out-door place for exterior activities when wheater is appropriate

Besides the house main building (A) the design includes a garage (B) right next to the street and comunicated with the house through a simple path which goes along among the pines, so you don’t enter the house directly from the street but you feel like geting inside the nature first.

Another path make is way in the back side of the house taking you to a small pavillon conceived as a “place for exercise and relaxation”. A balcony on the slope high enough to be a privileged viewpoint.

North Façade East Façade

The north façade, is filled with windows giving a continuous visual comunication with the trees in the front side of the house. Nevertheless the rest of the façades have no windows to offset the energetic lost effect of the big amount of glass in the north side.
