sunday 27 July | 6pm

The Australian Haydn Ensemble is fast gaining a reputation as one of Australia’s finest period-instrument groups.

They regularly perform music of the late baroque and early classical periods on original instruments, with gut strings and classical bows, throughout Australia and Europe.

Following a successful debut year, including sellout concerts at the Sydney Opera House and a highly successful concert at Government House in 2013, they present a wonderful program of classical favourites.

This program represents a view of how the process of writing for the keyboard developed throughout the 19th century.

There is a strong connection between these three composers: the deaf Beethoven embraced the 12-year-old Liszt after hearing him play, and Debussy heard Liszt in his later years. Each had a tremendous influence on their younger contemporaries.

‘There are some new ways and new ideas on how to listen to Bach and Beethoven in this program. The Partita BwV1013 (originally for flute) was composed around the same period as the cello suites and for me serves as a palate cleanser and a source of new ideas. The two Beethoven sonatas represent the composer’s early and middle periods. even though there are two later sonatas by Beethoven, the op 69 sonata is considered to be revolutionary in how it uses the two instruments. You can already imagine Schumann and Brahms in the wings, waiting for their turn.’
