It began in faraway Indochina, a land of beauty, elegance and glamour. Here, Helene An spent a noblechildhood within the Vietnamese Royal Court, in a world where glamorous entertaining was a way of life.Even as a young girl, she had a passion for the culinary arts, and spent hours watching and learning from

the family’s three chefs—Vietnamese, Chinese and French. Her privileged life changed forever one evening, notlong after she’d married and had three young daughters. In 1975, she and her family were given just one hourto flee the oncoming Communist army. Helene, her husband and children, made their way to San Francisco.

Arriving in San Arriving in San Francisco with little from her past life, Helene joined her mother-in-law Diana An, in running a20-seat Italian diner that Diana owned. Together they worked 16-hour days, seven days a week and introduced

San Francisco to Vietnamese cuisine featuring Helene’s signature dishes such as AN’s Famous Garlic Noodles™ andAN’s Famous Roasted Crab™. The diner became Thanh Long—San Francisco’s first Vietnamese restaurant —

followed by the launch of Crustacean Restaurant San Francisco, 20 years later. In 1997, Helene and her daughtersopened Crustacean, Beverly Hills, one of Los Angeles’ hottest restaurants and “the spot” for celebrity sightings.

In December of 2009, Elizabeth opened AnQi Gourmet Bistro & Noodle Bar at South Coast Plaza. Also in 2006, the An’s youngest daughter, Catherine expanded their business to include An Catering, a full service off site catering division.In 2010, Catherine opened Tiato in Santa Monica, a casual kitchen concept with its own herb garden that doubles up as

an event space.

Today, the An family operates House of AN, a multi-million dollar restaurant/hospitality business.
