HOUSE OF PRAYER LUTHERAN CHURCH “Grow in Faith, Make Disciples, Serve in Love” JULY 2016 VOLUME 7 ISSUE XIII www.houseofprayerhouston.org SOME WORDS FROM YOUR TRANSITION PASTOR. . . Thank you, House of Prayer, for your warm and gracious welcome. Vicki and I feel blessed to be with you. I am honored and privileged to be serving you as your transion pastor. We arrived from Boise, Idaho on 6/21 aſter a 1908-mile journey that we spread out over 5 days and 4 nights. It was a joy to lead you in worship for the first me this past Sunday morning. Here are just a few personal notes of introducon: I grew up in Monroe, Michigan, aended Wienberg University (B.S. in Bus. Adm.) and Concordia Seminary, St Louis (Master of Divinity) and have served congregaons in Gunnison and Denver Colorado as well as Boise as a “seled” pastor. Together, Vicki and I have 5 children, 4 of whom live in Denver/Ft. Collins area—the other in San Francisco. In September, we will be celebrang 20 years of marriage. Our big personal news is that we are expecng to be grandparents for THE FIRST TIME this coming September. Yes, we are VERY excited! We are looking for more “permanent” temporary housing in the area. More specifically, we would like to rent the equivalent of a FURNISHED 2-bedroom apt./condo/house. If you hear of any leads or have suggesons as to where we might look, please do let us know. Here are a few pastoral pieces I would like to share with you: I am focusing on building relaonships in my first two months among you. I want to get to know each of you, and I have chosen to do that primarily through a series of 7 “GET ACQUAINTED CONVERSATIONS” that will take place on consecuve Sundays beginning July 3rd immediately following Sunday worship. Please consider signing up for one of these. I would like to limit each CONVERSATION to 8-12 persons to facilitate good sharing. These will last no longer than an hour (11:25-12:25—at least in July), and they will include snacks/refreshments. I will be working primarily with two groups in the congregaon—the Congregaonal Council and the Call Commiee recently appointed. I come among you with no personal agenda. Rather, I understand my role to be that of a pastor-coach helping you to discern where God is leading you as you transion to new pastoral leadership for the longer term. I will be in the office or making calls each week on Wednesday thru Sunday. That will be my official “work week.” I will take Monday and Tuesday as days off to allow Vicki and me to explore the cultural landscape of Houston. Of course, I will available for emergencies on those off days as needed. The general rule of thumb is that when I am in the office and the door is open, I am available. I will close the door only for phone calls and personal visits. I do all my prep work for sermons and classes in the early hours at home. So do not hesitate to stop by and say hello when you are in the area. Feel free to call, text, or email me any me. I can be reached at 208-571-6309 and at [email protected]

SOME WORDS FROM YOUR TRANSITION PASTOR. . . Thank you, House of Prayer, for your warm and gracious welcome. Vicki and I feel blessed to be with you. Together, Vicki and I have 5 children, 4 of whom live in Denver/Ft. Collins area—the other in San Francisco. In September, we will be celebrating 20 years of marriage.

Our big personal news is that we are expecting to be grandparents for THE FIRST TIME this coming September. Yes, we are VERY excited!

We are looking for more “permanent” temporary housing in the area. More specifically, we would like to rent the equivalent of a FURNISHED 2-bedroom apt./condo/house. If you hear of any leads or have suggestions as to where we might look, please do let us know.

Here are a few pastoral pieces I would like to share with you: I am focusing on building relationships in my first two months among you. I want

SHARE YOUR MUSIC IN THE SUMMER

Due to a long-standing commitment that was scheduled long before I accepted the invitation to come to House of Prayer, I will not be here during the week of July 11-16. I will NOT miss any Sundays. I will be doing some hiking, fishing, and talking theology in the Idaho mountains with my good friend Ron Rude, campus pastor at the U. of Arizona. I will be leaving Sunday afternoon of the 10th and returning early afternoon on Saturday, the 16th.

It is clear to me God has been and is at work among you. You are very engaged in doing God’s mission at House of Prayer. Please know that; please celebrate that; please give thanks to God for that. Let’s partner together to stay engaged in that mission as we take our signals from our crucified, risen, living Lord—following him as he leads us into the future. And let’s have a lot of fun doing it. Pastor Jim

BOOK CLUB - July 19 at 7:30pm

The House of Prayer book club meets on the third Tuesday of each month upstairs at church in room 207 at 7:30 pm. The book for July is David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell. The book is more interesting than this review leads you to believe. It was also just noticed, that although it was not planned exactly, the next three months cover King David from several different perspectives. All are invited on Tuesday, July 19 at 7:30pm. From Booklist—*Starred Review* Gladwell’s best-sellers, such as The Tipping Point (2000) and Outliers (2008), have changed the way we think about sociological changes and the factors that contribute to high levels of success. Here he examines and challenges our concepts of “advantage” and “disadvantage” in a way that may seem intuitive to some and surprising to others. Beginning with the classic tale of David and Goliath and moving through history with figures such as Lawrence of Arabia and Martin Luther King Jr., Gladwell shows how, time and again, players labeled “underdog” use that status to their advantage and prevail through the elements of cunning and surprise. He also shows how certain academic “advantages,” such as getting into an Ivy League school, have downsides, in that being a “big fish in a small pond” at a less prestigious school can lead to greater confidence and a better chance of success in later life. Gladwell even promotes the idea of a “desirable difficulty,” such as dyslexia, a learning disability that causes much frustration for reading students but, at the same time, may force them to develop better listening and creative problem-solving skills. As usual, Gladwell presents his research in a fresh and easy-to-understand context, and he may have coined the catchphrase of the decade, “Use what you got.” --David Siegfried

We’re collecting items for Baby Care Kits and School Kits throughout the summer and fall. In October, the Southeast Women of the ELCA will be meeting at House of Prayer for their Cluster meeting, and

they would like to assemble baby care kits. There will be a box in the narthex to collect items.

the armed forces, including camouflage.

Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed for the Kit. If you do not have new items, gently used and clean items with no stains or tears can be substituted.

B A B Y C A R E K I T S A Baby Care Kit from LWR is like a promise. It says to that baby, your needs will not be neglected by this

world. You matter to us. When you donate items and assembles Baby Care Kits, you provide encouragement by welcoming these little ones into an international community that cares. These Kits are distributed as part of emergency and relief efforts, but they are also given out as part of LWR health initiatives to encourage women to seek prenatal care. One such initiative, in Mali, provided training for local prenatal health care

workers, who were given Baby Care Kits to distribute when they assisted with births. These kinds of programs help more babies in rural, poor areas receive a healthy start in life. We hope you will join us in this effort!

2 lightweight cotton t-shirts, 2 long or short-sleeved gowns or sleepers (without feet), 2 receiving blankets - medium weight cotton or flannel, or crocheted, or knitted with lightweight yarn,

Please include sizes between 6 and 24 months. Varying the sizes of the clothing items included will make the Baby Care Kit useful as the baby grows.

Sweaters may be knitted or crocheted from leftover yarn, or made from heavy double knits or fleece. Select a pattern that suits your skill level. Preferred styles have buttons or ties down the front.

Diapers can be made from flannel or recycled t-shirts. Download a Diaper Tip Sheet with instructions. If knitting or crocheting receiving blankets, including one knitted/crocheted blanket and one flannel

blanket will provide maximum versatility. Onesies can be cut and hemmed or serged to make a simple t-shirt. Gowns, rompers or top/pants sets can be substituted for sleepers. Feel free to shop garage sales, resale shops and other discount shops for items.

PATTERNS FOR GOWNS/CAPES You can download the Baby Gown pattern and the Hooded Baby Cape pattern - just search the internet for “LWR Hooded Baby Cape” or “LWR Baby Gown.” Copies of these instructions are also printed up and

available for you to take home. Look for them on the back of the bulletin board in the narthex.

SCHOOL KITS To the children who receive School Kits, these supplies mean the difference between getting an education

or not. Public school is usually free, but in the places where LWR works, even a few required supplies, like pens and paper, may be more than many families can afford. And when parents can only afford to

send one of their children to school, girls rarely get priority… yet the education level of mothers has the biggest impact on development.

GUIDELINES Please give new items only, except where otherwise noted

Please do not donate items with any religious symbols, messages or your congregation’s name. Please do not donate any items decorated with a U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references

to the armed forces, including camouflage. Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. All items should be new and in

good condition. Remove any excess packaging, pack all items in bag and close. Do not enclose the Kit or any of its contents in plastic bags.

INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING IN EACH SCHOOL KIT:

scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well), 5 unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band, 5 black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with a

rubber band, 1 box of 16 or 24 crayons, 1 2½” eraser, 1 sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag approximately 14” X 17” with shoulder straps (no standard backpacks).

but usually the best sales are in September and October.

Attendees: Victor Johnston, John Meyer, Dennis Sbach, Jim Mikkelsen, Beverly Curtice, Steve Zobenica, Curtis Bradbury, and Joyce Miller. President Victor Johnston called the meeting to order at 7:04pm and led the opening prayer. May minutes were approved.

President’s Update—Victor “Coffee with Council” after service on June 19th–Council members will be available for questions about the Call process, the transition pastor, Lift High the Cross and other activities at HoP. During the third week of June, Pastor Jim & Vicki Grunow will be coming from Boise, Idaho and will begin ministry at HoP on June 22nd. On June 26th, Pastor Jim will be installed and will lead worship. He wants to meet with congregation members in small groups (~10 people) after worship services. A Council person will cohost these meetings with Pastor Jim. He also plans to meet one-on-one with each staff person and each Council member. At Pastor Jim’s request, Council agreed to reschedule the meeting next month to July 5th.

Treasurer’s Report—Dennis We sent checks of $10,000 to Water to Thrive and $4,000 to ELCA World Hunger in May. Also, we paid for half of our insurance costs. With five Sundays of giving and two Distinct Abilities checks, expenses were almost covered. Council voted to pay down the mortgage with the $10,000 bequest from the Williams’ estate.

Financial Secretary’s Report—Jim Through the fifth month of the year, giving covers 44.4% of the 2016 budget year. While year-to-date giving is ahead of budgeted spending, May giving was only slightly ahead of 2015 giving.

Vice-President’s Report—John John will serve as Council representative to the Call Committee. Gene Wallin installed a defibrillator in the kitchen. Training will be offered soon. Proof of insurance coverage will be provided to the copier lease company.

Discipleship Report—Joyce Online LEAD Assessment is available until June 15th. Paper copies are available from Eli or from an usher at worship. The assessment results will provide information about congregational and leadership behaviors and guide us in moving forward with God’s mission. Repair for mic jacks will be covered by the Praise Team and Service budgets. The amplifier for the ceiling speakers will be checked when the mic jacks get repaired. We must ascertain that sound system settings are secure. Thank you to Dianne Hilkemeier and Karen Mikkelsen, who organized the reception for Pastor Pete’s last Sunday. The Nursery Attendant position will be advertised in July with the goal of having the position filled when Sunday School resumes in September.

Faith Report—Beverly Christians in Action (CIA) plans an August 2nd trip to Moody Gardens and a September 2nd trip to George Bush Library in College Station. CIA lost $60 on the June 2nd Astros game. Book Club and Women’s Bible Study will continue through the summer. A box is available in the narthex for collecting baby care items for kits that will be prepared at the annual WELCA Synodical Conference in October.

Service Report—Steve One of the AC units is nearing the end of its service life. Suggestions are to get data about the temperature of air coming from the compressor, the temperatures in the rooms supplied and the hallway, and the thermostat setting. Possibly, air may be redirected to provide more effective cooling. During recent rains, water leaks were observed in an upstairs closet and in the upstairs hallway. He will lead a campfire worship on July 10 at the beginning of Day Camp/VBS (July 11-15 at HoP.)

The stained glass from our old church will be in the narthex. Fellowship Hall plans will be considered after the sanctuary is completed. A prayer committee to support the call process will be formed. Pastor Blair will meet with the Call Committee at the beginning of July.

New Business: We are in need of committees/teams for God’s Work Our Hands, Christmas in July, Oktoberfest, work in youth room and sound room (to clean out and declutter.) We will encourage members to send Eli updated information for the Directory. Eli will update and maintain the church website.

You can recycle the following at House of Prayer: cell phones, inkjet cartridges, compact fluorescent light-bulbs, plastic bags, paper and small batteries. Items

for recycling can be dropped off in our secretary’s office (there are bins on top of the filing cabinets). If you’re ever drinking beverages at church out of aluminum cans or

plastic bottles, there are recycling containers for these items outside of the Fellowship Room upstairs.

RECYCLING AT HOUSE OF PRAYER

Remarkable Churches Notes from LEAD session lead by Peggy Hahn and from the LEAD newsletter

Remarkable churches are worthy of notice. What is worthy of notice at House of Prayer? Take a post-it from the bag and add your thoughts to the poster by the Living Wall. The ones that are already there were made during a workshop at the synod assembly in a very short time period. People are driving by our congregations without even noticing that we gather weekly to worship a remarkable God. Remarkable means worthy of attention, which begs the question, how are we reflecting God in our congregations? Has our expression of God become so “head-focused” that we have undervalued the heart and soul of our faith that would communicate a remarkable God? In his book, “A Whole New Mind,” Daniel Pink makes a compelling argument that in the past, the culture of the US (along with other countries) has over-engaged and over-valued what has been typically understood as left-brain thinking (linear, analytical, objective thought). He makes the case that by devaluing the right-brain (artistic, subjective, intuitive, thoughtful) side of humanity, we have also devalued what is emerging as essential to thrive in this changing world. The right-brain / left-brain theory originated in the work of Roger W. Sperry, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1981. Today, neuroscientists know that the two sides of the brain collaborate to perform a broad variety of tasks and that the two hemispheres communicate through the corpus callosum. This new understanding of how the left and right brain works together offers insight for congregational leaders as we wonder out loud about religion (left brain) and spirituality (right brain) faith and our expression of a remarkable God.

Remarkable churches are worthy of notice. Let’s put our left brains and right brains together and make House of Prayer a truly remarkable congregation.
