when sewing on buttons, double the thread before threading the needle. this makes four strands of thread used for each stitch taken. with these method, three stitches will attach a button quite securely.

use lower-wattage light bulbs wherever you can. where you need more light, it is wiser to use 100-watt bulb rather than two 60s.

when broiling meats or bacon on a rack, place a piece or two of dry bread in the broiler pan to soak up the dripping fat. this not only helps eliminate the smoking of fat, but reduces the chance of the fat catching fire.

velvet must be pressed carefully. put it right side down on a plush terry towel and press gently on the wrong side of the velvet.

first sit down, then gather the entire garment together and slip each foot in so that toe and heel fit smoothly and aren’t twisted. then, with steady pressure and leaving no slack, draw hose up over the knees. stand up and pull hose smoothly to the waist.
