HiThis year at FGAM, we are looking at the theme of a ‘Household of FAITH.’ It is a term found in scripture (Gal 6:10) and one that has been birthed out of the unique journey that FGAM has been on since its inception over 18 years ago.

I didn’t start out my life as a pastor. In fact, I started out far from God, living for my own glory. I was kind of

‘compelled’ into FGAM when it started, truth be told. However, over the last 18 years, something amazing happened. Uncles and aunties at FGAM gathered around and gave me advice (sometimes unsolicited!), young men mentored me, friendships developed, strangers at church prayed for me and leaders gave me a chance to serve and to change. God had to correct quite a few things in me. Parts of my character needed to be shaped, my gifts had to be encouraged and in more instances than I can count… I had to be disciplined. I discovered that FGAM had a particular way of doing church. A way of doing church that was very intrusive, very relational, somewhat all-encompassing but also well meaning and full of love.

Looking back, I now realise that it took a village to raise me. I cannot pinpoint one person, or a speci!c instance where everything changed. It was a household. A great big extended household with people who weren’t even physically related to me (mixed in with some who were). It was a household that was held together by a common Faith.

All throughout scripture, God establish-ed ‘households’ that would uphold the Faith and shine like a light as a blessing for all the nations. This started with the !rst ‘family’ in Adam and Eve (Gen 1:28) and was unfolded in the Old Testament through the ‘family’ nation of Israel (Gen 12:1-3). In the New Testament, because of the work of Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8), a new kind of household was established. This was the church (or ecclesia). Households (like families and churches) have a high relational component, and have a very powerful effect on people growing up in it. My hope is that we will be able to recreate what happened with me as I grew up at FGAM. I hope that FGAM will inspire ordinary people

to grow in their faith and that we will establish a culture that nurtures people to transition into their God given destiny.

In our family, in our congregation, in our community and even in the other parts of the world (like Philippines, Slovakia etc.) are people who are hoping that we get it right. They wish that we would re" ect Christ correctly. Christ in us... it is our hope of glory (Col 1:27). This must be true for our church household as well as for our personal domestic households, and indeed our very own lives.

Love and blessings in Christ, Pastor Chris Ong

HOW DOES IT RELATE TO OUR MISSION?

Our mission statement is “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD (Joshua 24:15).” We believe that the best Master you can have in life is Jesus Christ (Col 1:15-23). That’s why our primary mission as people and as a church is worship. We are created serve the Lord. Household of F.A.I.T.H. is the term we have developed to describe how FGAM and the families within it aim to embody that mission. It’s our vision for “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

WHAT DOES THIS VISION LOOK LIKE ?

How do we serve the LORD and what does it look like? If you close your eyes, what is FGAM going to be like after ten years as a Household of Faith? At its core, WE make up the household of faith. So whatever change we want to see in a church, has to begin with a change in us. Programs that are run in the church ultimately rub up against our own lives. We could have a great welcoming process that gets new comers connected into our church. However, if we, ourselves, are not willing to share our lives with others, we merely look welcoming. So for us to be a welcoming church requires a change in our personal and family lives. However, if we, ourselves, do not have space for people, then the end result of the ‘church’ welcome will be a nice email that ticks the box for welcoming. So for us to be a welcoming church requires a change in our personal, home lives. When that happens, FGAM as a Household of FAITH will inevitably become more friendly.

The Chinese have a concept called ‘ ’ – the mandarin word for country.

It is made up of two characters: ‘Guo’

which means ‘country’ and ‘Jia’ which means ‘household’ or ‘family’. Simply put, whatever is good for the family is good for the country and vice versa. Just as a country is made up of families, the families in our congregation make up the church. That is why we say our home should be just like a Christian home. A Christian family should aim to be welcoming, a blessing to their neighbours.

By focussing our churches’ efforts on the everyday life of families, couples and individuals, we believe we can begin the whole process of being a light to the community around us from the INSIDE OUT. The acronym F.A.I.T.H. looks closely at speci! c values that make up a healthy Household of FAITH.

Households of FAITH are diverse, multi-generational and will stay in relationship over a long period of time. This will require us to understand each other, have lots of love and patience, as well as being forgiving and gracious Most of all, it will require a connection with a God who loves you and wants the best for you.

Faithful is the new spectacular. The pursuit of excellence has made many burn bright and ! zzle out. A spouse that is faithful to the vow to ‘love and cherish’ the other, a Christian faithful to Christ all their life … a Church faithful to its purpose and calling. These are things that are rare.

Jesus gives us a glimpse of this when he says, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done (Luke 22:42).” God has a mission for this church, He has a mission for your family and He has a mission for your life: We are to spread the good news and testify of Jesus Christ. It is the work of the Evangelist. We hope you will live out your calling.

A C T I V E & p e r s o n a l l y i n v o l v e d

Jesus didn’t save us from afar. The Bible tells us He came to us in the # esh (incarnate) and dwelt with us (Matt 1:21-23). Christianity is not a conceptual religion. Our faith must be lived out in our lives. We were not saved to sit on seats. Christ in you is the hope of glory (Col 1:27). The ministry of the Apostle activates people to action. We hope you will put your faith into action.

I n t i m a t e r e l a t i o n a l l y

Love isn’t clean. When you get close to someone you see their # aws, their hurts and you notice the differences. Yet, God’s love, loves us anyway. So often ‘love’ is used in abstract, distant ways. It is so easy to love from a distance. Jesus gave us a living picture of how to love when he forgave Peter, when he wept for Lazarus and when he related to those close to Him. Ephesians 2:17-22 paints a picture of how we have been brought together, being joined together intimately into a household where Christ is the cornerstone. This is the ministry gift of the Pastor. We hope you will love God and people in an intimate way.

All of us need to learn and be teachable. The great commission calls us towards disciple making, and we are ever the disciple of Christ if we truly have Him as LORD. Jesus Himself learned patiently and was under instruction (John 5:19). Who can speak into your life? Discipleship requires patience in learning and humility, and it points towards a Christian walk that isn’t stagnant. There’s constant iteration between learning and applying. This is the task of the Teacher. We hope you will learn and grow in your faith and disciple others to do the same.

H o l y & s e t a p a r t

Holy means ‘set apart’ in purpose. It’s often confused with external actions and clichés, and we can quickly conjure up pictures of things ‘holy people’ are supposed to do. However, throughout the Bible, God used very ordinary things and people to do his purposes (1 Cor 1:28-29). Water, is a good example: It can be used for washing your car, washing dishes, to drink, and even for cooling down. However, when it is used in the Temple, it becomes Holy Water. In much the same way, ordinary Christians were created for Spiritual purposes, for God alone. It’s His voice we listen to. The Prophet reminds us that we belong to God, set apart for Him. We hope you will ! nd the supernatural in the everyday and the ordinary.

The Bible records many transitions, such as, the transition of Moses to Joshua, Elijah to Elisha, David to Solomon, John the Baptist to Jesus Christ, Christ to His disciples, and Paul to Timothy. Because life is not static, we have to embrace changes and transitions as part of life in this world. In fact, the world is changing at an ever-increasing rate. Computers and mobile phones today are a far cry from when it !rst appeared, something resembling the Star Trek movies when I was a kid in the 1960s. So it is with the Kingdom of God and His church.

This year, Chris takes over as the Senior Pastor of FGA Melbourne. Like Caleb and Joshua, Chris is tasked to take the present and next generation into the new season God has at hand. I believe God has anointed Chris to take the church to the next level of faith in experiencing God and impacting our community.

I have seen God’s hand on Chris’ life from young and I can honestly say that he has surrendered his life for the cause of Christ.

God is de!nitely not !nished with me, Allan, Peggy or any of the older leaders yet. He’s merely moving us to the next phase of our ministry. For Evelyn and myself, the vision is to help mobilise our church further to reach the world. For those who have a heart for missions, more avenues will be opened to ful!ll Jesus’ Great Commission. This transition will also release me to have time to mentor more people in their gifting and calling. How exciting is that? Let’s keep looking forward to what God has ahead for us!

s u n d a y s e r v i c eSunday services are a bit like a big family gathering for us. During the week, we worship and serve God in our own homes and out in the mission ! eld that we are called to. However, we get together weekly on Sunday to worship together and experience God together. Whether you’re visiting for the ! rst time, exploring Christianity or part of a family of Christ-followers, you are very welcome.

During each service, while we try to give our very best to God, you’ll see that above all we value authenticity. This means that you’ll get people from different generations, different gifts and different walks of life share and serve God together.

Household of FAITH (March to May)The ! rst of our major themes in 2013 is titled ‘Household of FAITH’ and it sets the scene for the future vision of FGAM. It carefully explores God’s calling for our church, our family and our very own lives, bringing our FAITH into the everyday. The sermon series is augmented with a parallel Home Group series also titled ‘Household of FAITH’ that runs over 8 sessions.

Love IS and 1 Corinthians (May to Aug)After a topical series, we dive straight into the Book of 1 Corinthians and look at the Cross of Christ, and what it means for our lives and Christian faith. This transitions into an in-depth look at Love. So many voices tell us what Love ‘is’, andaim to shape Love into something that is convenient, comfortable and shallow. However, God (who is LOVE) gives us a very clear de! nition of agape love in 1 Corinthians 13. We aim to illustrate this series with our own home-made mini sitcom series tentatively titled ‘Love IS’. This sermon series will also be augmented with a parallel Home Group series.

Prayer/Supernatural (Sept to Oct)We spend a month looking at prayer and God’s work in the supernatural, culminating in our big conference event of 2013, the FGAM Prayer Conference with Ps. Julius Suubi. We also have a week of prayer and fasting where we learn to rely on God in every area of our lives.

Wiser (Oct to November)This series looks at the practical application of God’s wisdom in our everyday lives. It is an intentional focus on the nitty gritty of our daily lives, looking at how Biblical Wisdom can be applied to parts of our world that we would ordinarily deem not ‘spiritual.’ Topics we will look at include Friendships, Time, Counsel and even Money.

S p e a k i n g T h e m e s S p e c i a l s u n d a y sFamily Sundays

Almost one Sunday a month, we have all our kids in the service. We do this so that we consciously incorporate our whole family into a multigenerational worship of God. Special activities will be developed for kids on those days. We are so committed to integrating church and family, that we’ve even set aside some days that parents get to go into our Kids Ministry!

Mission SundaysFor four Sundays in the year, we pause our regular theme, and set aside a weekend to focus on God’s Mission outside of the four walls of our church. It’s a great opportunity to ! nd out how you can be a part of God’s global work.

High Praise SundaysWe’ve got two big praise and worship Sundays planned for the year, where we lift up our voices and our instruments and worship God through the whole service. It’s really a time to celebrate God as we seek Him and spend more time listening and waiting on Him.

WHAT IS BGH?Building God’s House or BGH is the name we have given to our church building program situated at 38 Lexton Road, Box Hill South. This property was purchased as a warehouse in 2010 for the price of $1.75m, paid for from the sale of 15 Ellingworth Parade. We’ve since completed Phase one of this program, which sees this property being used currently to house our FGAM staff, hold meetings as well as support a number of our community outreach programs. We are currently seeking the necessary approvals to commence the next phase of this program which will see this facility eventually holding our Sunday service and other church-wide programs and conferences.

WHY DO WE NEED BGH?Through the BGH program, we will have a physical premise to call our home and house our Sunday services and events. Additionally, this facility will strengthen our capabilities to run even more outreach programs to bene!t our surrounding communities.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?You can partner with us in numerous ways. Firstly by praying for God’s wisdom, providence and favour as we engage and interact with a host of groups to bring this vision to pass. These stakeholders include the City of Whitehorse, our neighbours, building contractors, architects and project managers to name a few.

Secondly, we will require signi!cant !nancial resources to bring this work to completion. To date and by God’s grace, we have raised over $1m of the $1.5m cost for Phase one. The balance of $0.5m is borrowed, and we are keen to pay down this debt to further save on interest costs. Tax deductible giving is also available.

Drop us a note to [email protected] if you have any questions or suggestions. We would love to hear from you.

H o m e g r o u p s All our Home Groups combine under one ministry, including groups for University Students, Young Adults and Adults. Home Groups meet on the second and fourth weeks each month at various locations and at times to suit their members. Our Home Groups predominantly follow a consistent curriculum which is linked to our monthly themes and weekly preaching topics. This ensures that the whole congregation is on the same page in regards to what the church is working through at any time. We urge all members and contacts to join a Home Group so they can receive the added dimension of spiritual input to transform their lives.

Y O U T HOur youth ministry (called Fungus), headed by Ps. Quentin Loke, holds Friday night meetings including rallies at Doncaster Secondary College on the ! rst and fourth Fridays, and small group sessions on the second and third Fridays, at our Lexton of! ces. Our youth also enjoy a range of other activities including outings, lockdowns, and an annual Youth Camp held during the holidays. Our youth ministry is comprised of two groups that meet together on Fridays:

FGAM Kids is a place where children can come, learn and get excited about God. Our goal is to challenge children anywhere from the ages of 2 – 12 years of age to pursue a relationship with Jesus Christ as their LORD and Saviour.

Our children also enjoy various outings and activities through the year, usually in the term breaks. Our Kids Pastor is Ps. Quentin Loke ([email protected]) or reach any of our team at [email protected]

The Worship Ministry exists to encourage, facilitate and inspire both individual and corporate worship. We want to see/hear/experience more of God’s tangible presence and more frequent release of His prophetic words during our times of corporate worship. Our hope is that we will be known as a church that knows how to attract, recognise and bask in the tangible, manifest presence of God.

CHOIROur choir sings every month and on special occasions. If you can sing, we’d love for you to join us in the FGAM Choir.

CREATIVE EXPRESSIONSWe encourage dance, drama, painting and many other creative expressions of worship during our services. If you’d like to get involved with this, please email us at [email protected]

Our weekly focus is praying for the family, blessing prayers for Pastors, leaders and congregation of churches represented. Privacy is assured. God has graced us with answered prayers each time we meet.

9AM SUNDAY PRAYER

Come an hour before the service to join us in prayer at Kingswood. We pray for individual needs, God’s work in the service and a time for worship.
