The Cobens called upon SteveGoodchild of Goodchild Builders and
Kathleen Reardon of RD Architectureto draw up and craft their vision forrenovating and enlarging the existinghome. The Cobens had plenty of inputinto the design and Ron was the onewho conceived the ingenious makeoverof the kidney-shaped pool into a rectan-gular shape. Ron calls it a “shape withina shape.”
For the interiors, Ron and Leanncollaborated with Anne Breux, whoguided the couple toward the distinc-tive look of their home with her colorsense and unique way of elevating abasic idea into a brilliant feat of design.The entire home is an example of howthoughtful design can yield remarkableresults.

Vickie and Russell contacted me for help about their datedbathroom makeover when she got stumped on the project.Her husband Russell had already begun the process with major shower tilework and was priming the wallpaper for paint when she got stuck on paintcolors. “The room just felt unbalanced and heavy on the shower side of the
room,” Vickie explained, “and I couldn’t find the right paint colors and wasn’tsure what else to do,” Vickie explained.

TIP: A product of the ’80s, this bath needed an update. When indoubt, be consistent with hardware, tile and trim paint colors and youwill be correct.
The couple was happy with the existing floor tile and worked withThorntree Slate & Marble to select darker shower wall tiles, glass mosaicborder tiles and 2”x2” floor tiles to coordinate. Vickie knew she wanted aneutral color scheme and a clutter-free look. They decided to keep the
original light box, the tub and bath vanity/countertop. “When we met,you were very helpful in suggesting the size for the mirrors and in fairlyshort order, you identified a wall paint color and one for the vanity. Youalso made a window treatment suggestion, something I was having ahard time imagining but I went with your recommendation,” sheexplained. “You also recommended one long, traditional wool runnerfrom www.homedecorators.com, which I love now, instead of severaldotty bathroom rugs.”

TIP: If you have a huge long mirror over the van-ity, consider adding a narrow storage cabinet andcutting down your mirror into two sections.
Vickie was chronicling the remodel on Facebook,so her friends commented on her progress through-out the process. “Initially, the comments were allabout the shower tile, which everyone loved. Assoon as I painted the walls and vanity and addedthe rug, the comments were very favorable abouthow the room was coming together!” she explained.
Vickie’s favorite part of the bath has been theaddition of the glass mosaic tile around the properlysized mirrors. “Russell envisioned a shelf that com-pletely filled the space between the mirrors. Iemailed you to see if I could use unique doors onRussell’s custom cabinet and to ask your opinion onpainting them like the vanity. I appreciated that youdidn’t insist that your original thoughts of shelvingwere the only way to go,” she said. Vickie paintedthe doors after Russell built, painted and installedthe cabinet. The couple loves the final result andrecommends people get professional help withremodeling projects.
“The only reason we didn’t do that from the verybeginning is that we have done a number of proj-ects already and Russell has the skills to do a gooddeal of the work. I did lose time trying to decide onthe finishing details, and if I had called you earlier Ithink things would have come together more quick-ly. In the end, however, having your input in com-pleting the project moved the process along andensured that I did not waste any more time ormoney on wrong choices,” Vickie concluded.

Dear Plantophiles,Let me introduce myself by saying I believe that there is no suchthing as a brown thumb. Good gardeners don’t possess innate mys-tical powers. What they DO have is keen attention to detail andwillingness to do their homework—the latter is immensely possiblevia internet. They also consult experts. I routinely seek the wisdomof others myself.
For example, when I moved to Houston I immediately regis-tered with our regional branch of Garden Club Mafia—not to doso would have been extremely unwise, possibly hazardous. Afterthorough screening by a string of operatives (all wearing trademarkpearls) I was granted an audience with The Godmother.
I was ushered into her reception chamber, an Orangerie, whereshe was sitting in an elaborate rattan peacock throne, surroundedby orchids. As I bowed she extended her hand so I could kiss herikebana shears. She then asked of my intentions, and I replied: “Iwant to be allowed the privilege of helping people garden in ourGulf Coast climate—what are the main elements for success?” Shetilted her head back and quietly spoke: “Mosquito repellant, sun-
screen and lots of iced tea.” I followed this with: “What aboutgumbo dirt—the most diabolical stuff that I have ever encoun-tered?” A flicker of a smile crossed her lips as she invoked:“Everything starts with the soil—give it big doses of organic anddrainage material. Amend! Amend! Amend!” As the echo of herwords faded, she motioned for me to rise and said, “That is all youneed to know for now. You appear to have potential and are grant-ed horticultural privileges in our domain. Don’t forget that we arealways aware of your activities.” Walking backward, I uttered,“Thank you, ma’am. I will spread your wisdom far and wide.”
Those reading this column will find that I am much moreapproachable, and will enjoy visiting with you here every month.Gardens, plants and nature are my passion, and I intend to makethem yours, too.

Soon the warm months will be upon us, so now is agood time to be thinking about your landscape andpossible upgrades. From the extensive to the sim-ple, they’re all about improving the scenery.

Landscape lighting adds immediate pizzazz to a garden. “It givesyour property street appeal at night,” says John Dailey, owner ofRobert Huff Landscape Illumination. “Especially it dresses up yourhome if you’re trying to sell it.” Another minor, but real, benefit isadded security.
If you’re adding lights for the first time, a quick primer: fix-tures can be found in plastic, rubber, brass, copper and stainless,according to Rob Greening, owner of NiteLites. Metal fixtures offerthe best durability, but are more expensive up-front, he notes.
Lighting systems generally fit into the two categories of highvoltage and low voltage, says Dailey. “High voltage is more expen-sive and great for illuminating large trees, as an example,” he says.“Low voltage is less expensive per fixture and uses less electricity,but doesn’t last as long as high voltage.”
Lightbulbs also present two main options. A technology thathas been around for years, halogen lights give off a warm whitelight. A newer technology comes in the form of LED lights, which

can also be warm white. But increase the intensity and that changes theircolor, says Greening. Dailey is a fan of LEDs, noting that, while they areinitially more expensive, they last about 50,000 hours versus the roughly5,000 hours for halogen. “They also use about 20% of the electricityused by halogen lights,” he says.
For DIY-ers, Greening encourages the use of direct burial wires(noted on labels) and avoiding telephone-grade wiring because it deterio-rates relatively quickly. He also says to use silicone gel lock connectors,which last longer.

Add a garden bench, choosing concrete,stone or recycled plastic, materials that maintain their good looks in ourclimate. Ornamental trees, such as the Chinese fringetree, Japanesemaple or Taiwan cherry, add interest and color. “Have a plan in place,”she advises. “If you know where you’re going, you’ll be happier with theend results.”

And to keep that spirit of enjoymentintact, she advises her clients to bear in mind that a landscape can bedeveloped over time—“undertake projects only when you’re ready. Ithelps to have an overall plan in place, but do things as your energy andbudget permit by undertaking the different steps in stages. That way, itwill be a pleasurable experience.”
DON’T HAVE TIME TO TEND PLANTS?Special advice for the homeowners who want to upgrade their landscapeswithout actually having to grow anything:• From Welch at The Arbor Gate: Add some garden sculpture or art,such as a kinetic wind sculpture or that most Southern artistic element, abottle tree.• Hartz suggests decorating your outdoor living space. “Add new patiofurniture or a fountain. Fountains are especially nice in an urban areabecause the sound of the water disguises city noises,” she says.• NiteLite’s Greening says, “Light up an architectural feature of thehouse. Front windows or columns, for example.”• Hartz also notes that our recent weather has caused the ground to shiftand that’s been hard on concrete. “You can cover cracks and really get acustomized look by laying pavers.” Her favorite choices includepaving stones and non-skid ceramic tiles.

At Robert Huff, Dailey points out that weather-relatedevents impact landscape lighting and “due to dead branches, you mayhave a light that used to showcase a tree and now it’s shooting straightup in the air.” In these cases, he recommends a quick re-design of yourlighting layout.
In that same vein, Greening with NiteLites encourages clients tomaintain fixture lens, which get cloudy due to our hard water—“some-times we go at them with razor blades.”
Hartz advises, “You can often freshen up your landscape simply bytidying up: mulch the beds, feed plants, trim dead growth, repair gatesand fencing. It’s amazing what that effort will do for a garden.”

A sensitive remodel and addition give new life to a1960s home on a lush Memorial lot
After searching for a home in the Memorial area for more than a year, Ron and Leanne Cobenknew they’d found the right house almost instantly when they attended a realtor’s open housein Piney Point Village.
“We saw right away that the house had straight, clean, modern lines that we could work with,”says Ron Coben of the Mid Century Ranch Modern they purchased in the fall of 2010. “We knewwe wanted to add on to the existing house—we weren’t sure how it would work, but we had the visionto build on the existing house.”
The Cobens noticed that most everyone else who attended the open house didn’t bother touringthe interior of the house, but merely scoped out the dimensions of the almost one-acre lot for tear-down/new construction possibilities. By contrast, the Cobens liked the existing 2800-square-foothome, built in 1968 and designed by architect Joel Brand for the original owners. The same couplelived there for 42 years and were pleased to find a buyer who planned to keep, rather than tear downtheir home.

PROJECT PARTNERSWhen the Cobens were looking for a builder and architect to takeon their remodel and addition, they decided to talk to the builderwho had completed a remodel on the house next door, since theirneighbors seemed quite pleased with the process and the results oftheir project.
Steve Goodchild of Goodchild Builders and Kathleen Reardonof RD Architecture had done the house next door, and had provento be a strong team. Not all builders, architects or designers are upfor remodeling and reinventing an older home, but Steve Goodchildwas very keen on the Coben’s home project.
“You got to want to do a remodel, restoration or renovation,”says homeowner Ron Coben. “Other builders were only OK withthe remodel, but it was not really their preference—architects, too.”
The Cobens viewed opting to remodel and add on as less daunt-ing than starting from square one on a new house.
“Because it was a remodel and because we wanted to save thefloors, we needed to minimize the number of walls to that wemoved,” says Leanne. “For me, that actually made the design processeasier, because it wasn’t a blank sheet of paper. We had to work with-in certain specifications.”
“It made it harder because it boxed us in, but it also made it eas-ier, because once you accepted that you wanted to live with what washere as much as you could, it simplified the choices,” says Don.
After the Cobens decided to keep much of the existing houseintact and make some alterations to it, they focused on getting asmuch of their own personalities into the design as possible.Functionality, ease of maintenance and capacity for entertainingwere priorities for the remodel and the added square footage.
Both Leanne and Ron have worked for years in marketing, sothey tend to be creative and thrive on the collaborative process.

their portfolios. The Cobenswere impressed with theefforts that both the archi-tect and builder dedicated tothe design and build out oftheir home.
GIVING THE PROJECT WINGSWith the decision to keepthe existing house, theCobens decided with archi-tect Kathleen Reardon toadd on two wings to theback of the home, whichyielded a U-shaped homethat wrapped around theoriginal pool. The morethan 3/4-acre lot had abounty of trees—more than100 trees, many of them tallpines. So from the begin-ning the goal was to leave as

many trees standing as possible as they drew up the additions. In the main rooms of the original home, the high, sloping ceilings showcase the original rooflines. And
much of the homey, yet oh-so-mod solid redwood paneling remains. For the remodel, all the wood wasremoved, numbered and carefully stored so it could be replaced in its original arrangement.
The builder and homeowners alike marveled as the sheetrock was removed to inspect structure andupgrade wiring and plumbing. They could see just how high the quality of the original construction was.This assured the Cobens that embracing this older home was the right thing to do and motivated the designand construction team to achieve a similar level of excellence in the new finishes and additional spaces.
A major aha-moment of the design process was the inspiration to go with a Mid Century-inspired but-terfly roof design for both of the additional wings.
“We wanted something ’60s-inspired,” says Ron. “The end result is an organic asymmetrical butterflyshape.”
With the additions taking shape, the Cobens and their architect focused on the challenge of how to con-nect the old house with the new sections.
“We had wanted structural steel to be a significant design element,” says Ron. “And Kathleen came upwith the idea for a visual spine made of the steel—some inside, some outside.”
With the shape and visual function of the steel spine laid out, interior designer Anne Breux wisely sug-gested painting the captivating, sculptural indoor/outdoor bridge a rich purple.
The Cobens freely admit that Breux’s color sense elevated the look of their home and is a main reason

they sought her expertise. It seems that Ron andLeann found they were repeatedly gravitating towardsgrey finishes and fabrics, but they felt certain thattheir ‘60s home needed some fun pops of color. EnterAnne Breux.
Breux was familiar with the work of Joel Brand,the architect of the original home, and Breux instant-ly connected with the project. The Cobens wererelieved that Breux agreed with most of their choices,but are quite pleased with Breux’s subtle and success-ful design tweaks.
“She understands the vision of the project,” saysRon. She is brilliant and creative without necessarilybeing expensive. For Anne, it’s really about the ideaand how to bring the vision to life.”
“She brings limited choices, which was so help-ful,” says Leanne. “We knew that she’d done herhomework and we could trust that they were the mostappropriate options.”
“Anne is a minimalist,” says Ron. “She wasalready conceptually there. When she suggestedpainting the sculptural steel structure purple, sheexplained that purple is a complementary color to thegreen backdrop of the wooded lot.
“It’s funny, the simple things aren’t always simple,but she gets there quickly,” says Ron. “Her ideas aremassively interesting. It’s a place we wish we couldplay, but we need her to get there.”

Container Gardening We asked Joshua Kornegay, owner of Joshua’s Native Plants,for advice and inspiration to help home gardeners have suc-cess with container gardening.
Before you get carried away with selecting pretty plants, selectingideal containers is key, urges Kornegay. “Make sure your pots have drainholes—even for indoor plants,” he says. “If you don’t have holes thenyour plants just sit in a soggy mess.”
Kornegay explains that gardeners can create a container garden withany size pot, but it’s important make sure you know the mature size ofthe plants and their root habit. It’s also a good idea to choose a style ofpot that fits your surroundings. Pots can be rustic, Asian, classic urns ormodern shallow bowls.
Our expert advises it’s best to combine plants that like the same soiland light conditions. “Different plants like different types of soil and soil
conditions—alkaline, acidic, etc.,” says Kornegay. “Some prefer wet feet,others like it on the dry side. Know which conditions plants prefer forbetter survival rate.”
He suggests home gardeners ask nursery staff for the best choices fortheir conditions—sun, shade and time you can spend tending plants.“Also, ask about dwarf varieties of shrubs and tree species that can behappy in pots, such as dwarf lemon trees.”
Tips for Care “Keep in mind, things in pots dry out twice as fast as they would in theground, so something that is drought tolerant in the ground still requireswatering when planted in a pot. Rosemary, for example, must be wateredregularly in a pot,” says Kornegay.

recommends checking the weight of a small pot frequently to see ifit feels dried out and watching for the “water shadow” on terra cottapots.
Similarly, he advises that plants that are winter-hardy in theground may not be winter-hardy when potted, because the roots areabove the ground. When in doubt, move or protect plants duringfreezing temperatures.
“Whenever you water plants in pots, it constantly depletes thenutrients, so you need to replenish or feed those plants,” saysKornegay. “You can even take the plant out of the pot, removeabout a third of the roots and about a third of the top and put itback in the same pot with some soil and compost and it will kindof start over with a burst of fresh growth. Nurseries do it all thetime.”
Periodic feeding of plants in containers is essential. “If goingorganic, take a handful of compost from the bottom of our com-post heap—that has all the micronutrients you need,” saysKornegay. “If using chemicals, make sure they are water-soluble. Inother words, something applied in a liquid form to be absorbed bythe roots. Cheaper granular fertilizers can easily burn a plant.”

projectRecipe for a Garden in a PotJoshua Kornegay of Joshua’s Native Plants extols a simple formula forassembling a pretty container garden. “There’s three basic elements: thethrill, the fill, and the spill,” he says.
Thrill—The taller focal point of a pot should have showy flowers orleaves. Go with butterfly iris, plumbago, hummingbird plant, rock roseor Bouvardia (firecracker bush).
Fill—Medium-height plants add texture or color to the base of the“thrill” plant. Try Blackfoot Daisy, allysum and various coleus.
Spill—Trailing plants that drape over the edges of the pot, such asLantana, English Ivy, Blue Daze or oregano.
Other themes that Kornegay suggests include edible gardens, such as let-tuces and herbs. He also recommends grouping a variety of cactusplants, succulents and sedums in a pot and then mulching with contrast-ing tumbled glass or rock. For a simpler, modern look, go with a singlespecimen per pot, such as a sculptural Blue Elf Agave, a tall cactus or awell-manicured Boxwood. He also notes that strategic top dressing, suchas various colored glass rock or stones helps deter critters from digging.
