A RodeoHouston® Favorite
CALF SCRAMBLE
The Calf Scramble Program began in 1942 and is designed to encourage enterprise, offer opportunity, and teach responsibility to the young participants. The Calf Scramble Program contributes more than $600,000 to the youth of Texas each year.
At each performance, 30 scramble participants line up to compete and catch one of the 14 calves. Eligible scramblers come from counties throughout Texas and must be active in their local FFA chapter or 4-H club.
Youngsters scramble to catch a calf, halter it and lead it back to the winner’s square.

The Calf Scramble certificate donation is $1,750. Recipients receive a $1,500 certificate to purchase a breeding beef heifer or market steer they will raise and return to exhibit at the following year’s Show. Upon returning, if the exhibitor completes the requirements of the program, they receive the remaining $250. Scramblers are expected to maintain accounting records, submit monthly progress reports to their donors and complete two essays throughout the year.
During the Calf Scramble Awards and Donor Reception, scramble exhibitors receive awards in recognition of their excellent work and donors are recognized for their contributions.
Scramble recipients also have the opportunity to participate in the annual Calf Scramble Progress Show held in the fall. With seminars, demonstrations and competitions, the Progress Show is a great opportunity for education and practice in the show ring for participants before returning to the Houston Livestock Show.
Texas 4-H and FFA judging contest participants range in age from 8 to 18.
There are more than 2,600 participants in the Dairy and Livestock Judging Contests hosted by the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™. The top 25 contestants in each contest receive scramble purchase certificates.
Dairy and Livestock Judging Donors are invited to attend an award reception and dinner to meet their judging contest winner then enjoy the action-packed rodeo performance that day. Benefit packages are issued per $1,750 donation,
not per name listed as donor. The benefit package is issued to the person listed as the contact on the donor form. Benefit packages will not be issued until payment has been received in full.
Should the winner choose not to use his/her certificate, please be assured that your donation will go toward the Calf Scramble Show premiums and awards. Calf Scramble exhibitors receive more than $50,000 in cash premiums in the show ring each year.
Individuals and corporations donate $1,750 toward each of the approximately 360 certificates awarded.
