University of Alaska
Challenge University of Alaska’s IT source data environment is complex, Institutional Research Analysts (business analysts) supported a complex eco-system of sources. The data provider was faced with the challenge of accessing and creating complex queries for a range of different departments.
Results Toad Business Intelligence suite delivered a robust solution that layered on top of data environment. The solution afforded IT development independence of rigid, database tools. Toad Data Point provided flexible SQL for drop-and-go in SAS. The Toad Data Point provided a clean interface which enhanced tool adoption which allowed the analyst to have greater access to analytic capabilities and features.

Data ChallengesWith the rapid growth of our online graduate program,
we ran into a number of problems:
• Increased and complex data sources
• New financial aid reporting requirements
• Governance needed for new recruiting partner
• Increase in self-service reporting needs
• Contractors with different hardware needs
Increased Data Sources
• Oracle Student Information System
• Recruiting efforts increased so we needed to
connect to MySQL CRM
• Converted to new SalesForce CRM (Cloud)
• Learning Management System (LMS) complex
reports needed for Financial Aid requirements
• Network account information stored in SQL
Server
Governance Needs
Our recruiting partner needed access to some
online student information
• Did not want them to have access to other
data
• Did not have data analysts on staff
• Need different types of reports for business
versus education
Self-Service Reporting
With the increase in staff and students, the
number of requests skyrocketed
• BI Staff did not increase
• BI department responsibilities grew
• Needed more options for varied users
Contract Employees
In the past for self-service reporting we used MS
Access and ODBC setup was standardized due to
consistent hardware
• Contract Employees used their own
hardware
• Hard to troubleshoot different hardware
options
• Needed to be able to run self-service reports
on-demand for workflow report
Solution: Toad BI Suite
We were already using Toad for Oracle for ad-
hoc report requests, and Toad for Data Analysts
for automating reports and cross-connection
queries.
• No learning curve to learn Toad Data Point
• Connects to multiple data sources, including
Sales Force
Solution: Toad BI Suite
Increase options for users of all levels:
• Automated reports for regular intervals
• Power users can easily use Data Point
• Decision Point for executives
• Publishing Views to segregate data
• Does not require ODBC setup for Contractors
• Complex reports can be set up to refresh less
frequently
Solution: Toad BI Suite
• Past: Automated Reports
• Present: Publishing reports
• Future: Dashboards and Analytics
Thank You!
