HOW ARE TRUSSESDESIGNED TO HANDLESUBSTANTIAL WINDS?
Effective, durable trusses often come down to one concept:customization. Every truss that is designed and installed in a
building needs to be both designed, and rated against, veryprecise calculations of wind pressure and trends in a
designated region. Just as you would need to design asubmarine to have certain levels pressure resistance
depending on recommended depth and speed, trusses aredesigned to provide pressure resistance above-ground.
Surrounding structures, and more.
If you've ever been through a city with tall buildings and flat ground on awindy day, you're aware that structures themselves can shape the wind
as it moves across the earth. Increases, or decreases in pressure areaffected by resistance, obstacles, and other factors. Likewise, when
designing trusses, truss makers need to not only take factors likesurrounding structures, or a lack thereof, into account, but also the
shape, placement, and alignment of the building itself.
With Main Wind Force Resisting System (MWFRS) calculations, trussbuilders can determine wind loads and pressure on an individual basis, to
provide a much more accurate truss construction and design for adesignated building.
With Components & Cladding (C&C) calculations, pressure can bedetermined at a much more “in depth” level, taking into account various
fixtures and features of a building, to provide the most effectiveprotection and coverage on a case-by-case basis.
With both calculations, the key ingredient is customization. There are no“one size fits all” truss designs, or at the very least, there shouldn't be.
Every building has its own exposure to wind, its own surroundingstructures, and its own weight, height, and even internal framework
considerations that can play an important role in how it will be able tohandle strong winds.
For wood trusses in Wellington KS, it's even more important to getaccurate, customized work. Kansas, as a region, experiences very strong
wind pressure; high speed winds and storm systems are a constantreminder of the importance of strong building structures, and strong
trusses to support them. Everything from shape, weight, screws, andalignment all play a role in ensuring that a home is secure.
