How do we see colour?

Electromagnetic Energy being transferred by the Sun

Red = Long Wavelength, Low Frequency, & Low EnergyViolet = Short Wavelength, High Frequency, & High Enegy

Some waves travel through objects and some are bounced off (reflected) or absorbed

A PRISM will separate light into its different colours due to the different speeds of each colour.

Violet is the fastest so it will slow down the most

If the eye only has sensory cones for the PRIMARY COLOURS

RED, GREEN, & BLUE how do we see other colours?

Secondary Colours are a mix of:Yellow = R + GCyan = B + GMagenta = R + B

White light = R + B + G ( all light reflected)Black = all light absorbed

Wonders?

• What weather conditions are needed to make a rainbow? (hint you need a light source and prism)

• What other objects (or situations) have you seen that will separate white light into its spectrum colours (ie. Rainbow)?

Let’s take a closer look at the Electromagnetic Spectrum

• What do you notice?• What uses Infrared radiation?• What is UV protection on Sunscreen?• What type of radiation has the longest wavelength and

lowest enegy? • What type of radiation has the shortest wavelength and

the highest energy?• What types of radiation have higher energy than visible

light? Which have lower energy than visible light?
