Welcome to this shorter issue of Network. We’ve reduced the page count so that we can fit a bumper Join-in-Jamboree booklet into your packet this month. But don’t let that stop you enjoying the articles we’ve lovingly prepared, crafted and designed
With the World Scout Jamboree coming round every four years, it’s a
Scouting festival that every UK Member can get involved with, and Join-in-Jamboree is designed to provide inspiration for Network programmes that fit
in with the key Jamboree themes. Make sure you take a good look at yours
now, and start planning for the year ahead.
Triple mootWe’ve taken an international theme ourselves this issue, with a look back at
the incredible World Scout Moot in Kenya, which made history for so many
reasons. There’s also a breakdown of other international opportunities you
can sign up for.
News reviewWe’ve been reviewing the kinds of stories you’d like to see in Network,
based on your feedback in the magazine survey. We’re planning more
programme ideas, more local stories and more input from Network
members. If you’d like to be involved in putting the supplement together,
get in touch with the editorial team at [email protected].
Help us out by putting ‘Scout Network supplement’ in the subject line.

Calling Sweden – Volunteer abroad
The Scout Association is teaming up with its Swedish counterparts to offer
a unique six month volunteering opportunity with the organisers of the
World Scout Jamboree, based in Stockholm.
We are looking for bright and enthusiastic applicants currently aged
between 20 and 25. You must relish the chance to spend six months living
in Sweden working directly with the Jamboree organisers. The Jamboree will
take place in the summer of 2011 and will see 32,000 young people gather
together from upwards of 150 countries to celebrate international Scouting
and Guiding at its best. You will make a direct and significant contribution
to this life changing event.
The placement will begin on 4 March 2011 and end after the Jamboree
in August 2011. This will be a particularly exciting time in the build up to and
climax of the biggest Scouting event in the world. By volunteering you will
be given a monthly living allowance, flights and accommodation in central
Stockholm. You will also be given the opportunity to attend the Jamboree
itself in 2011 and see the fruits of your labours.
Applicants will need to be happy to undertake a range of tasks on behalf
of the Jamboree organisers, from supporting local Units in Sweden to help
planning preparations for the event. You will need to be open to new
experiences and comfortable living in another country for a prolonged
period of time.
What are you waiting for? Go to www.scouts.org.uk/evoss and apply online. The closing date is 5pm
on Friday 3 December 2010. If you have any questions, please contact Patrick
Rooke on 020 8498 5451 or email [email protected]

This summer, the 13th World Scout Moot made Scouting history as
Kenya hosted the first World Youth Event ever to be held on African

If Scouting is about meeting people, learning
from them, making friends and discovering more
about ourselves, then this summer’s World Scout
Moot in Kenya has to rank amongst the very best
of what our Movement can offer.
The 123 people from the UK, who travelled to Africa,
joined 1,500 others from 67 countries for an adventure
that will live with them forever. The discovery and
challenge of living with such a diverse collection of
individuals in one of the world’s most colourful
environments is an experience to inspire and engage.
As part of their experience the group learnt traditional
crafts, ate local food, climbed breathtaking mountains,
kissed giraffes and beat the Australians at rugby. They
also learnt how to wait for buses, cook in an
international team, do a sword dance and appreciate
the world more than ever before.
The pictures speak for themselves, but in very few
words, to all those who were there, never forget it; for
those who weren’t, next time, in Canada, make it you.

Multiple moots and moreAfter the awesome adventure that was Kenya you may be feeling left
out, but that’s no reason to feel glum. Here are four opportunities that
may whet your appetite for the future
Emily Armitage has been to more moots than she has weddings, and has this to say about why you should moot it up down under to usher in 2011
T he term moot was first used in a Scouting
context by Baden-Powell in 1926, in a letter
to Percy Bancock Neville. It came to mean a
gathering of Rover Scouts and the term is
still used today to describe meetings involving Scouts
from the oldest sections. In fact, it could be argued that
every time you camp with Network you are in fact
attending a moot.
Globally, moots have huge significance and the
recent World Scout Moot in Africa is an important
example of this. However, my moot focus has become
Australia where I will be leading a group of Scout
Network members from the UK at the 18th National
Australian Rover Moot (aka Oz Moot). This event will
take place over 13 days from 30 December 2010 at
Woodhouse Activity Centre in Adelaide. Oz Moot
promises fun and adventure with a choice of activities
ranging from a gourmet tour of local vineyards to cage
diving with sharks.
If that tickles your fancy, there is still time to sign up,
but you have to be quick. You have until 15 November
2010 to commit. If you’d like to find out more or are
interested in joining our trip you can contact me at
[email protected] or visit www.ozmoot.com

Network members anywhere in the UK. To discover the

Finland 2012 – Roverway your wayFor younger Network members, 2012 offers you the
chance to travel to Finland for Roverway, Europe’s
premier Scouting gathering. Aimed at teams aged
between 16 and 22 why not start your international
Scouting journey with the Finnish?
More information is likely in the first half of next year,
but Contingent Leaders will be recruited in the coming
months. For more information, register at

Oh Canada – Make 2013 your yearThe next World Scout Moot will take place in Canada
in 2013. That may seem like a long way off, but plans
are already underway to make this event bigger and
better than anything that has come before. Every
country in the world will be invited to send a
contingent and if this summer’s event in Kenya is
anything to go by, this is one not to be missed!
If you would like to get involved, in any capacity,
now is the time to register your interest.
