How Not to Study for ExamsBelieve it or not, re-reading your textbook has

"little or no benefit" when you are studying for a test. Most students don't realize this, because they have an "illusion of competence" (that is, you think you know the material better than you really do) when you re-read notes and textbooks, especially when re-reading passively instead of actively.

One method of studying that is better than passive re-reading is the "read-recite-review" ("3R") method: "Read the text, set the text aside and recite out loud all that you can remember, and then read the text a second time."

More importantly, you learn better and remember more from repeated testing (from both in-class quizzes and from self-testing at home) than from repeated reading . (So when your instructor gives you lots of quizzes or tells you to memorize basic facts, don't complain! That's the best way to learn and to remember what you learn.) Source: William J. As a Buffett Scholar, you are required to report your final grades to the Buffett Foundation. The process is very simple. All of your grades will be posted to your MyRed page by December 24th. You will copy and paste your grades and e-mail them to Becky Connor at [email protected]. Make sure the grades you submit also show your “cumulative” GPA. You also need to send the Buffett Foundation of your intended date of graduation and your current e-mail address. This is the Foundation’s sole way of corresponding with you. The deadline for submitting your grades to Becky Connor is Monday, January 3rd. Failure to submit your final grades by the deadline will delay your spring disbursement. If you withdrew from one or more courses this semester after August 31st, you are responsible for repaying the Buffett Foundation for the amount of that course. There are two options of repaying the Buffett Foundation: 1.) you must submit a check to the Buffett Foundation by Friday, January 7th, or 2.) notify Becky Connor and have the amount of your withdrawn course(s) deducted from your spring disbursement. You will need to notify Becky Connor which option you decide to pursue. Failure to notify Becky Connor of a withdrawn course and your repayment option by Monday, January 3rd

will delay your spring disbursement. *PLEASE NOTE – Pat Young is no longer the contact person for the Buffett Foundation. The new contact person for the Buffett Foundation is Becky Connor. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these details, please contact Becky Connor at [email protected].

"How YOU prepare in the present will predict how YOU perform in the future"

“Helen Keller once wrote "I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do." I really liked this quote, which is especially appropriate during the season of giving. As college students we often don't think we can really help out that much with anything outside of school. During the holiday season the Salvation Army has Red Kettles outside many locations throughout the country and people give pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars. Every person who donated those pennies became a part of one large group that donated a total of $139 million dollars in 2009. Giving doesn't have to be limited to money - it may be saying hi to a homeless person, it could be opening a door for a stranger, or even picking up a book for someone who dropped it. In this season of thanks and giving, what are a few small ways you can show thanks and give to others?”
