PIL Requirements for Administrators

• After January 1, 2008 administrators need PIL approved programs/ courses for their administrative Act 48 PIL hours

• Certified principals and assistant principals employed for the first time after January 1, 2008 and candidates applying for certification must complete an induction program within the first five years of employment

Core Standards:

•The leader has the knowledge and skills to think and plan strategically, creating an organizational vision around personalized student success.

•The leader has an understanding of standards-based systems theory and design and the ability to transfer that knowledge to the leader's job as the architect of standards-based reform in the school.

•The leader has the ability to access and use appropriate data to inform decision-making at all levels of the system.

Corollary Standards:

•The leader knows how to create a culture of teaching and learning with an emphasis on learning.

•The leader knows how to manage resources for effective results.

•The leader knows how to collaborate, communicate, engage and empower others inside and outside of the organization to pursue excellence in learning.

•The leader knows how to operate in a fair and equitable manner with personal and professional integrity.

•The leader knows how to advocate for children and public education in the larger political, social, economic, legal and cultural context.

•The leader knows how to support professional growth of self and others through practice and inquiry.

Pennsylvania School Leadership Standards Pennsylvania School Leadership Standards

A Program Is:

•A series of related professional education activities with a common theme and a results-based focus that is conducted over a period of time.

•Programs may be offered by a college/university, intermediate unit, professional association, school district, PDE, or other approved entity.

•The program must provide a minimum of twenty- five hours of study inclusive of related, job-embedded assignments, culminating in an evaluated final project that is focused on improving conditions in the school or system that will lead to increased student success.

A Course is:

• A series of lessons

• Offered for credit by a university, IU, PDE, or an approved entity

• Each credit =14 hours of study and 16 hours of related, job-embedded assignments, culminating in a final product that is focused on improvement that will lead to increased student success.

These are the National Institute School Leadership (NISL) courses. They are the free courses offered by PDE

A course consists of several units.

It is highly recommended that courses be taken in sequence.

Units cannot be taken separately.

NISL InductionNISL Induction

•NISL Induction consists of Course 1 AND Course 4.

•It is 14 days of training over 2 years.

•Participants must take both courses.
