Introduction

Dear friends,Our 125th year as Cincinnati’s Art Museum is upon us. On landmarks such as this, we look back at all of the wonderful things that have happened in our past, but more importantly, we focus on the future of what this Art Museum can become for our community.

Our recent and upcoming highlights include the following:

• Completing a facilities master plan that will guide the future of our building, better connecting the community to the collection and realizing the Art Museum’s role as a community gathering space.

• Embracing new technologies such as videoconferencing, wireless Internet access, image digitization, and a new Art Museum web site to give you new ways to access the art collection and all that’s happening at the Art Museum.

• Creating innovative installations and programs to attract new audiences to the Art Museum.• Celebrating our community through a 125th Anniversary Celebration Season, which began May 10.

As we embark on our next 125 years, we recognize what makes this institution great. While the Art Museum is comprised of an impressive permanent collection, the heart of the Art Museum is its community, the people who have created and supported the Art Museum throughout its history and who will carry it into the future. This second annual report to the community salutes them.

J. Philip VollmerPresident of the Board of Trustees

Mission Statement:We will actively engage a diverse and growing audience with great art for their enrichment and enjoyment. We will collect, preserve, study, and exhibit art in accordance with the highest professional standards. We will operate in a fiscally responsible manner.

Paul Strand SouthwestJune 24 to August 20, 2006

View thirty-five photographs from Paul Strand, a pioneer of photographic modernism who is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest American photographers of the twentieth century. This exhibition covers the years 1930 to 1932, a very productive and previously unexplored period of his career, when he lived and photographed in New Mexico. Absorbing the Southwest’s complex cultural history, Strand made pictures that merged realism with abstraction and formalism with a distinctive American romanticism.

Aperture, a not-for-profit organization devoted to photography and the visual arts, has organized this traveling exhibition and produced the accompanying publications.Paul Strand, Hacienda, Taos, New Mexico, 1930 © Aperture Foundation, Inc.; Paul Strand Archive

Andrew Wyeth Watercolors and Drawings: Selections from the Marunuma Art Park Collection, Japan February 3 to May 6, 2007

See 114 watercolors and drawings by American master artist Andrew Wyeth, inspired by the world of Christina and Alvaro Olson in Cushing, Maine. This exhibition explores the artist’s ongoing fascination with the Olson’s everyday activities, domestic interiors, and utilitarian objects. Spanning three decades of his career, the works range from stand-alone watercolors to preliminary notations and detailed studies that demonstrate how the artist’s compositions evolved into finished tempera paintings. The exhibition includes ten studies for the painting Christina’s World (1948) as seen in early compositional notations, detailed figures and arm studies, and the final watercolor sketch of Christina.

Female Artist Demonstrates the Breadth and Diversity of the Art Museum’s Collection

Elizabeth Nourse, (1859–1938)

The acclaim of Cincinnati

artist Elizabeth Nourse went

far beyond this great city.

She exhibited at the Salon in

Paris and throughout Europe.

Her painting Peasant Women

of Borst was the first work by

a major female artist to enter

the collection in 1892.

Since its founding in 1881, the Art Museum has strived to build a varied representation of the world’s greatest art.

We have continuously collected paintings, sculptures, textiles, works on paper, and decorative arts for more than 125 years, including women artists such as Nourse. The Art Museum acquired its first collection of Native American art, as early as 1885, and was among the first anywhere to display African art, the renowned Steckelman Collection, in 1890. Today, we continue to collect art in a diverse range of media from many different historical periods and many different cultures.

When Joel and Bernice Weisman began collecting Japanese prints in 1956, it was for practical reasons: they were affordable and complemented Modern furniture well.

Over time, the couple established a comprehensive collection that spans four centuries, which will enter the Art Museum’s permanent collection as a promised bequest. Joel, a retired UC professor, focused on collecting to showcase the historical development of the prints. Bernice, a twenty-seven-year Art Museum volunteer, prefers prints with cats. The Art Museum will display eighty of the prints in a new exhibition opening this September.

Art Museum Preserving a Piece of Cincinnati Art History

Philanthropist and real

estate investor John J.

Emery’s most important

civic interest was the

Cincinnati Art Museum.

Through his leadership

and generosity, the Art

Museum acquired many

extraordinary works of art.

Among John J. Emery’s most important gifts to the Art Museum were two monumental paintings: Mural for the Terrace Plaza Hotel, Cincinnati by Joan Miró and Mural of Cincinnati by Saul Steinberg.

Both represent pivotal moments in the careers of two of the most significant artists of the twentieth century, and Art Museum staff is now restoring these works to their original condition. Later this year, you can learn about the conservation process by watching the Miró mural as it is conserved on site in front of visitors. Conservation is expected to be completed by early 2007.

“The objects talk to each other and tell a story.”

Amy Dehan, Assistant Curator of

Decorative Arts

It takes a team of experts to create art installations for visitors to enjoy and learn about art. This staff team recently completed a major renovation of the Art Museum’s American galleries.

Art Museum staff collaborated this year on a complete transformation of our American art galleries. The benefits of this new approach, which combines painting, sculpture, and the decorative arts, can been seen in Gallery 216. The staff of the Curatorial and Education divisions, working in consultation with area school teachers, developed a fresh and engaging interpretation of the works of art centered around different humanities themes.

“Visitors will be surprised by the strength of our Japanese art collection.”

Hou-Mei Sung, Curator of Asian Art

Since coming to the Art Museum in 2002, Hou-Mei Sung has uncovered many Asian art treasures in the collection.

When Sung began to catalog the Art Museum’s total Asian art holdings, she rediscovered other strengths beyond the highly respected Chinese collection. Her research findings focused on Japanese treasures, including three hundred sword fittings and one thousand ceramic works. As a result, she has created the first gallery of Japanese art on display in many years. Sung’s next task is to uncover the treasures in Indian and Southeast Asian art, which she will include in a planned reinstallation of the entire Asian art collection.

New Programs Enable Children to Enjoy Art at Younger Ages

Dinese Young and daughter Sophia, 3, of Columbia Tusculum enjoy a Culture Kids tour of the Art Museum’s contemporary galleries.

“Sophia loved every part of the day and couldn’t stop talking about what she saw.”

Dinese Young, Columbia Tusculum

Dinese Young brought her daughter Sophia, three, to the new Culture Kids program, an interactive education experience for preschool age visitors. Sophia was so inspired that she came home and devised three new art making projects.

Like Sophia, many young visitors enjoy the Art Museum’s collection through special programs created just for them. This year, a new program provides interactive ways for children to learn about art while having fun with their families. Culture Kids is a monthly workshop designed for preschool visitors. Each workshop is centered on a theme, and families view art, play games, or touch objects and then create their own artwork. Culture Kids is part of a larger initiative that provides enhanced, interactive family programming for our family visitors.

New Faces Enjoying Art Museum’s Collection

With the recent elimination of general admission fees, residents continue to come frequently to the Art Museum, including many new faces.

In 2005, 25 percent of our visitors were first time guests. As the Art Museum expands its reach into the community, the number of African American visitors has increased in the past year and now represents more than 17 percent of all visitors. Visitation by young professionals has also increased thanks to innovative programs such as the One World Wednesdays series and the Ultimate Art Trek. The Art Museum continues to reach out to many different communities through programs such as Art for Life and community partnerships with organizations including Cincy Latino, the Association for the Blind, and the Japan America Society.

Project Access Changing the Way Visitors Use Art Collection

Scott Hisey and Jay Pattison are on a mission to make accessing the collection easier than ever before through Project Access.

Now you can view nearly one thousand works from the Art Museum’s collection from the comfort of your own computer, thanks to Project Access. This initiative digitizes photographic and curatorial records of art works, placing them in a searchable online database. The database increases access to the collection by displaying many works not currently on view and by providing updated research on the objects. A recent $500,000 grant enables the Art Museum to further its goal to digitize the entire collection, with sustainable image assets that can be used for generations to come.

“The Art Museum is going digital.”

Everage King of Mt. Washington with his portrait of Mr. Joel McCray

“Whenever I see Mr. McCray, I get a fresh dose of guilt of what he expects of me.”

Everage King Artist

Local artist Everage King decided to honor his fifth grade language arts teacher Joel McCray in a watercolor portrait miniature. McCray gave King, who grew up without a father, a sense of self worth and a desire for excellence that inspires him to this day.

King’s portrait miniature is part of the exhibition Portrait Minis—Cincy Style in the Closer Look Gallery, a family-friendly gallery that encourages inquiry and discussion. He is one of the many artists in our community who create art works to display in this gallery throughout the year. Each exhibition focuses on broad themes and often complements interactive displays in the adjacent Education Center.

Original Challenge Grant and Today’s Facilities Master Plan Inspire Community

In 1880, Charles West promised to the city that he would donate $150,000 toward the building of an art museum in Cincinnati if the public would match his donation. Within a month, the community had raised $161,000, a remarkable sum for that time, which made the dream of an art museum in Cincinnati a reality.

In 2006, the Art Museum’s Board of Trustees approved a facilities master plan that, over the next 20 years, will open up the Art Museum’s collection to the community in unprecedented ways and transform the physical building and site into a more significant civic space. This plan is an important first step to realizing the strategic goals to connect the Art Museum’s collection to the community.

The facilities master plan process took 12 months to complete and included an extensive self-study of current space and future requirements, analysis of Art Museum peers around the country and community input sessions. The process was led by the New York planning firm of Cooper, Robertson and Partners.

The One World Wednesdays Advisory Council members are a cross-section of the community and include Art Museum staff members and volunteers.

One World Wednesdays Attracts Young Professionals to the Art Museum

“One World Wednesdays attract one of the most diverse and energizing crowds in town.”

Teresa Hoelle Advisory Council Member

The diverse group of young professionals who comprise the One World Wednesday advisory council is the key to this popular party series’ success.

Started in 2003, One World Wednesdays highlight a different country each month through art, dance, food, drink, and music and is the brainchild of this collaborative group. With the goal of introducing the Art Museum to the young professional audience, the parties now attract more than one thousand people each month to enjoy the Art Museum.

Interactive Videoconferencing Brings Art Museum on Demand to Schools

Art teacher Amy Cholkas uses videoconferencing to enable her students to view the Art Museum’s collection without depleting her school’s limited field trip funds.

For her students, videoconferencing tells the stories behind the art and teaches them about art in ways that connect to all areas of the curriculum.

Can’t make it to the Art Museum this year? Let the Art Museum come to your classroom through interactive videoconferencing, a new series of lessons available on demand to classrooms worldwide. Topics range from The Underground Railroad to The Weather and You and help incorporate art into all areas of school curriculum. With budget cuts for buses and art teachers, videoconferencing is becoming an ever more important way for teachers from this community and beyond to connect to the Art Museum.

“When my students saw themselves on television, they were immediately compelled to interact.”

Amy Cholkas New Richmond

Children have enjoyed art making at the Art Museum for more than 80 years. In this 1920s photo, visitors create art in a Saturday morning art class in a gallery just off today’s main lobby.

Art Education Mission Began with Saturday Morning Art Classes

In 1918, Director Joseph H. Gest began introducing art to children at the Art Museum through Saturday morning art classes.

Based on the educational philosophy of the time, he focused on teaching children about the visual arts through the process of art making. For many in our community, these classes were the first of many Art Museum experiences.

Since that pioneering time, the Art Museum has continued to blaze new trails in art education. Today, the Art Museum offers tours, lectures, workshops, and studio art classes for adults, as well as interactive art tours, special programs, and art making experiences for families.

Front Line Staff Initiative Focuses on Visitor Needs

Made up of volunteers and staff, the Art Museum’s front line team, including visitor services, security, facilities support, gift shop staff, and gallery aides, are working to ensure you have a pleasant experience at each visit.

When you visit the Art Museum, there are many front line staff and volunteers with whom you interact. Through a new Front Line Initiative, the Art Museum is improving their connection to you, the visitor, through innovations designed to make the Art Museum more friendly and inviting. Training programs, communication and schedule improvements, new job descriptions, and visitor service guidelines will enhance your experience at the Art Museum.

Community Volunteers Integral Part of Art Museum Operations

Volunteers are an integral part of every aspect of the Art Museum and have been since its founding in 1881.

Approximately nine hundred volunteers donate more than two hundred thousand hours each year, in areas ranging from the Donald P. Sowell Committee, which works to promote the involvement of the African American community, to the docents, who give tours and educational presentations to Art Museum visitors, to departmental volunteers, who work across all departments to enhance the Art Museum’s daily functions.

“We are fortunate to have dedicated volunteers who donate a tremendous amount of time to an institution they love.”

Art for Life Establishes Neighborhood Partnerships

Calvin Williams works with noncustodial fathers, helping them become committed, nurturing parents through the SUMA Fatherhood project in Walnut Hills.

Working with the Art Museum’s Art for Life program, these fathers are breaking down barriers to healing through art making and art interpretation in response to the Art Museum’s permanent collection.

SUMA Fatherhood Project is one of the many neighborhood partners the Art Museum has established through its Art for Life community engagement initiative. Now in its second year, Art for Life is concentrating on four target zones: Colerain Township/Forest Park, Kenton County, Mason, and Walnut Hills. Collaborating with organizations such as the Kenton County Libraries, Children Inc., The BRIDGE Senior Center, Mason City Schools, and Walnut Hills Branch of the Cincinnati Public Library, the Art Museum has developed ongoing programs such as portable exhibitions, hands-on art making activities, and illustrated lectures and discussions about art to bring the Art Museum into the community. To date, the program has reached more than two thousand participants.

“Art is very powerful in the healing process…this (art partnership) is something we’ve wanted for a long time.”

Corporate PartnersMore than fifty companies joined the Corporate Partners program September 1, 2004, through August 31, 2005. We acknowl-edge and thank these companies who provide financial support for general operations, exhibitions, educational programs, and special projects. This investment is key to the Art Museum’s growth and serves as a catalyst to the overall economic vitality of our region as it helps attract and retain both companies and employees to our community. We appreciate these most generous contributions.

Endowments provide perpetual support to the Cincinnati Art Museum, including our everyday operations, care of the collections, educational programs, special exhibitions, and the purchase of works of art for the permanent collection. Friends of the Mu-seum have created endowments throughout our history, beginning with an endowment created by Charles West, who provided a challenge grant to build an art museum in Cincinnati in 1882.
